Okay so last year Finland's RADIO ROCK held a massive poll about the biggest icons in Rock and Metal. The idea was to have 12 of the best bands in the metal world listed and then represented each month of the year.
Well Black Sabbath made it on to the list at position #12. Which to me is a travesty. They should have been higher. But considering the overwhelming love Finland has for bands like Maiden and Metallica and such it's not a real surprise really...
Anyways once it was revealed earlier this month that Black Sabbath was gonna be the featured band of the month, people could vote for their favourite Black Sabbath track.
The idea was to make a top 10 list.
The trick in this vote was that people could only vote for ONE song out the entire Sabbath catalogue.
And it seems that that tactic provided a very interesting listing.
I'm gonna be updating that list as days go on, as only one song per day is revealed. This started on Monday.
10. Children Of The Sea
9. Headless Cross
8. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
7. N.I.B.
6. Black Sabbath
5. War Pigs
4. Iron Man
3. Children Of The Grave
2. Heaven And Hell
1. Paranoid
I am eager to see what's coming next. I am fairly certain that War Pigs/Iron Man/Paranoid are gonna top the list, but I am also hoping for Heaven And Hell reaching close to the top...that song by the way was my pick for the vote.
But so far the songs 10 and 9 have been real surprises to me...
Lets see what's to come in the following days. I'll be adding the songs here as soon as I hear them on the radio.
-
Children Of The Sea doesn't surprise me at all. It's a great song for starters, but was also a set staple of the Dio era and was also often played in Dio's solo band performances.
Headless Cross is a surprise though. Not only making the top 10 but beating out Children Of The Sea. But given its probably one of the most popular if not the most popular song of the Martin era I can't see another Martin era track making it in.
Lists like these rarely throw up many surprises though so I'll take a stab and say the remaining 8 songs will be, in no particular order.
Children of the Grave
War Pigs
Sweet Leaf
Black Sabbath
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Paranoid
Iron Man
Heaven and Hell
And yep, Sabbath coming in at #12 ranking raises eyebrows indeed.
-
^^^ You've got Iron Man twice, I guess you meant War Pigs? I might have had Symptom of the Universe instead of Sweet Leaf, but just my opinion.
I would be interested in knowing who else was in the top 12, or have they not been announced yet?
-
^^Yep
I'd have Symptom as well but it's just what I think it'll be given history with these type of lists/polls.
-

Don't know yet. We get one icon per month this year...culminating to the #1 icon band in December. Which will be either Metallica or Iron Maiden...of that I am 100% certain.
Jack you got pretty much the same listing as I would have thought...although I wouldn't have included Sweet Leaf under any circumstances...Symptom or even Into The Void is much more likely
-
Are there likely to be some bands inthe 12 that might be considered "extreme", or do you think the top 12 will be pretty much the usual suspects? So Metallica, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Judas Priest and so on?
-
It's hard to say really...
There will be one or two Finnish bands (who also sing in finnish) included for sure...
I'd say
Judas Priest
Motörhead
Nightwish
Kiss
Slayer or Megadeth (perhaps, since both are pretty popular here)
DIO (this is more of my wishful thinking but it is possible)
AC/DC
And like I said the battle of #1 will be between:
Iron Maiden
Metallica (Master Of Puppets won the 500 best rock/metal tracks poll of Radio Rock few years ago)
+ 2 or 3 Finnish bands.
That would be my prediction...
-
My reason for putting Sweet Leaf in was because of its consistency on compilation albums over the years as well being heavily featured in the setlist.
I was thinking this radio station was more of a mainstream top 40 Rock station but seeing a Master Of Puppets won the top 500 greatest albums poll this might actually be interesting with more deeper cuts making the list.
Guns N'' Roses would be a certainty to make the list wouldn't they Charger?

Oh heck...forgot about them as I am really not into them at all...but yeah...most likely they will.
As far as Radio Rock goes they play a lot of deep cut tracks from bigger bands too...not just best ofs which is really nice. In fact talk about Sabbath I've heard songs like Lady Evil, Wishing Well, Turn Up The Night, A National Acrobat among others...the late night jukebox is quite a plethora of obscure songs at times. Which is really nice.
But they do also play a lot of the hits too especially during day time.

Aaaaannnd drum roll...
#8 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!
-
I had hoped SBS might be higher, but at least it is in there.
-
#7 is N.I.B.
-
^^Of coarse
Don't know how I forgot that one
-
#6 is Black Sabbath
Next week we'll hear the top 5...
I'm assuming it'll go something like
Children Of The Grave
Iron Man
Heaven And Hell
Paranoid
War Pigs
-
Bit surprisingly #5 is War Pigs!
-
#4 was Iron Man
So what's top three then?
Children Of The Grave
Heaven And Hell
Paranoid
in that order me thinks.
-
Yeah I think in that order too. Personally I'd have H&H #1 of those three remaining though.
-
Same here 100%!
-
#4 was Iron Man
So what's top three then?
Children Of The Grave
Heaven And Hell
Paranoid
in that order me thinks.
Is Children Of The Grave that well known?
-
^^^ I know what you mean, even though it's been a staple of the setlist like forever, I don't really rate it as a top 3 song.
I think the 3rd choice could be a surprise (Sympton / Fairies / Wheels / Snowblind etc.), but I do agree that Paranoid and Heaven will be in there.
-
Well Children Of The Grave does get a fair ammount of play on the station...and it indeed has been a live staple on almost every tour since it came out...
I am rather certain it will be there...
-
And as suspected
#3 was indeed Children Of The Grave

#2. Heaven And Hell
This went pretty much as I thought it would.
-
Aaaaaaaand drum roll please....
#1 was surprisingly...
PARANOID!
Hah! :D
When I have some more time I'll analyze the results a bit...
-
Okay so the final list is as follows:
10. Children Of The Sea
9. Headless Cross
8. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
7. N.I.B.
6. Black Sabbath
5. War Pigs
4. Iron Man
3. Children Of The Grave
2. Heaven And Hell
1. Paranoid
And lets remember this was done by listeners at the Radio Rock website, where everyone could only vote for ONE song.
So lets make some comparisons to The Community's listings.
Typhon's 5&5 list...
From the top 5 songs selected only two made it to this list. Heaven And Hell and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Also only the same two from conbined top 5 and near misses list.
Which shows that hard core fans tend to choose some deeper cuts where as average listener picks what you might call greatest hits.
The Battle of the Epics gave us War Pigs as the Ozzy era winner and Heaven And Hell as the Dio Era Winner and Heaven And Hell as the overall winner which kind of does follow in suit with this voting as Heaven And Hell did beat War Pigs here too.
But all in all only 3 songs in common.
Children Of The Sea and Headless Cross being the surprise picks for this voting though...as neither of those songs have been in any of our top listings...
-
Yep, as predictable as we thought.
Maybe you can keep these updates on these rock icon polls going Charger(if you can be bothered?) for the other bands. Might be a bit of fun trying to guess some of these.
-
I had already decided to do that. :)
Naturally it'll be a long project a year long to be exact but what the hell right.
I'm sure we'll find out the #11 on the list next week...I'll make a thread on the Other bands section when the time comes.
-
Aaaaaaaand drum roll please....
#1 was surprisingly...
PARANOID!
Hah! :D
And lets face facts. It was Paranoid that actually propelled the band to world wide popularity.

That is quite true indeed.
