We didn't seem to have a Megadeth thread yet...
I just saw Megadeth celebrating the release of So Far So Good So What and it got me thinking about Megadeth albums and how often the third album is the weak album...like:
Killing Is My Business and Business Is Good
Peace Sells
Both excellent albums, Peace Sells being one of their best ones ever...
then
So Far So Good So What
which is quite a let down...part from Set The World A Fire, In My Darkest Hour (which is one of their best tracks though) and Liar the album has very little to offer.
then
Rust In Peace
Countdown To Extinction
both stellar albums to say the least
and then
Youthanasia
Which is one of their absolute worst albums to date. Train Of Consequences is the only one that's even worth listening really
Okay now things get bit different:
Cryptic Writings
One of their best albums ever! Pure magic this one.
and then...well...
Risk
Talk about a dramatic change in sound and style...even more so than Youthanasia. Crush 'em and Time are good tracks though, but the overall sound of the album is just off...waaaay off...their worst album ever for sure.
But then we get back on track with the majestic
The World Needs A Hero
The System Has Failed
Both kick ass albums again. Although System is more of a solo album as it pretty much only features Dave as an official Megadeth member the rest were all payroll musicians. But this one shows how much of what makes Megadeth Megadeth is actually Dave.
and then...
United Abominations
Again one of their worst albums...quite uninspired and tired sounding album with over the top political content. With only one good track Gears Of War and one decent one in Sleepwalker
and then again two monsters!
Endgame
Thirteen
13 also saw the return of the other Dave and that showed. Great album which features one of Megadeth's finest rockers Public Enemy #1!
and then again a slightly weaker effort in
Super Collider
Altough the album is much better than most give credit to...too many based their whole opinion on the god awful title track which was the first one released, it does have some great tracks like Kingmaker, The Beginning Of Sorrow & The Blackest Crow
And then the return to thrash with a masterpiece that was
Dystopia
Based on this the next one should be a killer too. And based on Dave's comments about the next album being even heavier than Dystopia hopes are pretty high. But then again Dave has been talking rather highly about every album anyways before they came out...like ofcourse all bands do.
Anyways it is kind of strange how the quality of the albums go as far as Megadeth is concerned. It's almost like Dave loses his rythm or his way somewhat after two albums...or is it that he just wants to change the sound drastically after a while? Who knows...
But no matter what I believe the album I'm most excited about this year is the new Megadeth.
-
I love all the Megadeth albums excluding Risk. I love So Far So Good So What and liked United Abominations for what it was.
As I said though I really like all of their albums. And you know that I love Super Collider as well. Each to his own though.
-
I've got a handful of their albums (just checked it's 5) and I love, I mean ADORE 2 of their albums and only those 2, the other 3 just don't interest me. Those 2 are Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction. I imagine I prefer them because they were less "thrashy".

Well if there ever was two Megadeth albums a person should adore it would be those two. :)

Yeah I know. We are sadly in the minority though when talking about Super Collider.

I'm with you Thel. Risk is the real black sheep of the catalogue. Everything else ranges from good to masterpiece. Mustaine is a super songwriter, a brilliant composer and has a great sense of melody. His guitar skills are off the planet.
Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? and Rust In Peace are his magnum opuses.

Yes I totally agree, and Rust In Peace is a total kick ass album, front to back!!

Oh no!!!!!!
I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on - but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun.
Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. All up to date information will be at megadeth.com as we get it. Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP.
Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to Dystopia – which I can’t wait for everyone to hear.
I’m so thankful for my whole team – family, doctors, band members, trainers, and more.
I’ll keep everyone posted.
See you soon,
Dave Mustaine
-
Oof, that's such a hard first sentence to read. I'm glad they're looking at a 90% success rate.

 oh no - don't die on us Dave!!!
-
This sucks so bad. Seems like they got it early which is a positive, but you just never know with cancer. Wishing and hoping nothing but the best outcome for Dave. The guy is straight up legendary and one of my all favourite musicians period, let alone in metal.
-
Yeah Megadeth it one of my all time favourite bands and Dave is one of my all time favourite guitarists so I am gutted about this...
I do hope he pulls through.
90% are good odds but that fuckin' cancer...you never really fucking know.
Also there could be complications...Dave could lose his voice.
Man this sucks.

The World Needs Dave Mustaine !
Wish him all the Best and a speed Recovery .
-
Saw that the other day :(
Here's to a Very Metal Recovery, Mr. Mustaine! :beerbang:
-
All the best to him for a speedy recovery. Fingers crossed the 90% inlcudes him.
Isn't this what Bruce Dickinson had a few years back and made a full recovery from?
-

I think Bruce had a cancer of the tongue, if I'm correct. It was about the size of a golf ball, according to Bruce !!

It was throat cancer but he did have a tumor on his tounge and also in his lymph node which he claims he got through oral sex, specifically the human papillomavirus.
-
Well damn...
Here's a person who had throat cancer and she just passed away...only at the age of 51....

Only two years after the original diagnosis and she ever beat it once....scary stuff...
Let's hope Dave's outcome is a better one.

Rest In Peace Beth Chapman.
Always loved Beth and the Dog, saddens my heart to hear this bad news.
-
This right here put a smile on my face:
You just gotta love Chris Poland!
-
Poland has such an amazing and distinctive sound & technique. Marty is my favourite ever soloist in Megadeth partly due to his overall body of work but Poland is right with him with his virtuosity & distinctiveness.
Junior looks so happy to be jamming with Chris again.
-
I gotta say if I'd have to choose between Marty and Chris...I'd go with Chris. Marty was great too but his playing wasn't all that "technical" if you will. I think both Chris' and Kiko are more technically talented than what Marty was but I do have to agree as an overall player Marty was great.
But honestly if I could chose which would return to Megadeth it'd be Chris 100% mainly cause he still has it for sure...Who know what Marty can do after nearly 20 years of playing Japan pop or what ever it was... :D
-
I'll take creative, passion and feel over technical anyday and Poland & Friedman had those attributes more than anyone else in Megadeth. Technical dose not mean better. Broderick was straight out of the technical school and was super boring. Marty & Chris have totally unique & distinctive styles. Poland being more a fusion player and Friedman neoclassical. Poland stuff is definitely technically harder to play though. His articulation is off the charts. Both sit at the top of the pile of Megadeth guitarist for mine.
If I had to pick my 10 favourite solos from Megadeth, they'd be made up of mostly Chris and Marty solo's with a Dave solo or two thrown in there.
-
I wouldn't call Broderick boring at all. But I will say that he wasn't much for improvisation.
Poland kind of always reminds me a bit of Ritchie Blackmore in his best years...something similar in the playing style...even if not in sound.
-
Dave's list of his favourite Megadeth guitar players. You can make as you will, or take him at face value in terms of his #1 as he's always tended to say whoever was his current guitar player was the best until they left or were sacked!
https://loudwire.com/dave-mustaine-favorite-megadeth-guitar-players/
-
Yeah Dave's always been partial to who ever he is playing with at the moment. I remember him praising Broderick when he joined as the best guitar player he ever worked with.
-
Be pretty bad if he *didn't* show partiality to his current sidemen.
-
Just got this message from Dave:
I wanted to take a moment to give you all an update on the current status of my health. I'm almost through the last round of treatment and my doctors are feeling very positive regarding my progress. I want to thank all of you for the support and well wishes these last few months. I can’t express enough gratitude as it has made this hard road easier knowing you are in my corner fighting with me!
Over the next few weeks my condition will be evaluated, and I will keep you posted on my progress as we get closer to the sailing date of the first Megacruise! We can’t wait to see you, and I know all of the other wonderful artists feel the same way. Let's make this event one for the record books. Less than 30 days till we are Thrashing through the Pacific!
See you all very soon.
Dave
-
^ That's great news, always good to hear when anyone's health is on the mend, especially an artist whose work we love and respect.
-
Great to hear Dave is doing better and that the treatments have been working very well!

^^Thats a great interview and quite reassuring. Glad everything is tracking positive for Dave.
-
That's great to know! I always liked Dave.
-
MEGADETH IS BACK BABY!!!!!
Cancer you suck!!! and DAVE you ROCK!
-
Wow! 5FDP is that big in Finland?
Glad Dave has been given a full bill of health and is back doing what he does best.
Band is sounding super tight for a first up performance too.
-
Well they were in the 12 icons list now weren't they...stupid.
Although by the sound of the clips lots and lots were there to see Megadeth too!
-
Oh damn!!!
Look what they just brought back to the setlist:
-

Great performance. The audience is standing their like stunned mullets

Dave and company always deliver the goods live from what I have seen!!! The guitars sound deadly!!!
-
So was listening to the Eddie Trunk podcast today and he interviewed David Ellefson and Eddie asked an interesting question to David which we had been pondering on here.
It was a question around how he found it surprising that Megadeth was supporting 5FDP in Europe recently and if 5FDP was actually a bigger band in Europe. David’s replies made sense are were also interesting.
First off he said that because they were Dave’s first shows since overcoming his throat cancer it seemed a perfect way to ease back into it and he would've really struggled with a headline set. He also mentioned that it’s been quite a long time since they’d done a headline tour in Europe as they’ve been doing the festival circuit in Europe for the last 10 years or so and the numbers don’t quite add up as well doing a headlining tour there. But the most interesting thing he did say was that 5FDP was huge in Europe and much bigger than Megadeth and one of the reasons why was that their founding rhythm guitarist and band leader/business strategist Zoltan Bathory was originally from Europe and like Lars Ulrich moved to America & started a band and strategically built the band around having a European presence and knowing exactly what it takes to crack the European market which kinda made sense and answered the question that we were wandering about on here ourselves.
-
If Bruce Dickinson sang for Megadeth
The guy does a great Bruce impersonation I’ll give him that
-
OK, now I want to hear Dave Mustaine singing "Two Minutes to Midnight", lol.
But I couldn't find that.
But I did find this...
Gotta say, I do like Mustaine as a singer way better than Hetfield.
-
Gotta say, I do like Mustaine as a singer way better than Hetfield.
Well who doesn't? :smug:
-
:haha3: :haha2: :haha4: :hankhill:
You guys crack me up. Whatever you’re on Z let me know so I can avoid it :problem:
-
I eat a banana every day and drink Diet Dr Pepper.
I think there's an interaction between the two...
-
Well that explains a lot!

Got my signed Rust In Peace book in today. Nice touch that they included a signed Rust In Peace tour pass dated to the albums original release date along with a bookmark.

That's pretty cool!
I've been pondering about buying that but haven't yet....
-
I saw them twice and Dave always delivered. I'd argue that while Metallica and Slayer are great, Megadeth and Anthrax are my favorite and underrated of the big four. I like and own every album, even Risk.
-
It's official : MEGADETH parts way with Dave Ellefson !
https://bravewords.com/news/megadeth-parts-ways-with-david-ellefson (https://bravewords.com/news/megadeth-parts-ways-with-david-ellefson)
-
Well that was to be expected....It's a real shame but it's also understandable.
I wonder would Lomenzo be coming back then or will Dave find someone totally new? I hope it'll be Lomenzo as he did a great job...no one can fully replace Ellefson in style and power but Lomenzo sure did a great job...but Dave doesn't really have a track record of going back to old members though...part from David and Chirs Poland...
-
That’s a pretty blunt statement. No thank you or wish David all the best. Interesting Dave hints at an already strained relationship outside of the recent events. I wonder if they’ll re-record Ellefson’s bass parts for the upcoming new album?
+1 for LoMenzo rejoining.
-
I was pondering the same thing... It seems though that the album is pretty much done...it might be tough to find a new bassist and have him record the stuff if the record company already has set some kind of time table for the album release though...
-
Wouldn’t take long to re-record the bass. Could knock it over in a week or so. With everything that’s gone on in the world in the last 12 months a slight delay in the release is nothing in the scheme of things. I know they have tour dates booked starting in August so they’d ideally like the album out or close to out by then.
-
Sounds about right...although I seriously doubt any touring would actually go on in August...anywhere. Maybe for small out door crowds but not on Megadeth scale I think...
The re-recording wouldn't take long that's for sure but finding the replacement...that might...never know.
-
As long as the band provides a singable contract, they should be able to find someone in short order.

Would it need to be a wet signature contract, or will digital signability be sufficient?

https://www.loudersound.com/news/dave-mustaine-erases-all-david-ellefsons-bass-lines-from-the-new-megadeth-album
URL kinda says it all... this I see as the necessary first step towards committing to a new bassist.
-
Not confirmed yet but rumour has it the new album is currently being mixed with the hope it will be out Nov/Dec and will be titled “The Sick, the Dying and the Dead”
Also Steve Di Giorgio has re-recorded Ellefson’s bass parts but won’t be part of the touring band.
-
DiGiorgio is a good choice! I've enjoyed his work with Charred Walls Of The Damned and especially with Spirits Of Fire. Too bad he won't be a full member though...
There is still possibility for LoMenzo I suppose...but kind of doubt that as he would have done the studio thing too if he'd be available.
-
Yeah Di Giorgio is a gun and much revered among fellow musicians and fans. He’s got a pretty good gig in Testament and working as a session musician at the moment but you’d think Megadeth would be a better paying gig than Testament. Maybe Dave wants someone that’s both accomplished and comes cheap.
Word around is that Felipe Andreoli from Angra(Kiko’s former band) has got the gig.
-
I think Dave's also looking for someone that can commit 100% to the band...I don't think he wants a revolving door of musicians anymore. And DiGiorgio has other commitments already.
-
...I don't think he wants a revolving door of musicians anymore.
Given the track record of Megadeth, I don't think that'll happen until the Group ceases to exist.
Ted

Well the line-ups have been fairly steady recently, but yeah. Megadeth isn't exactly the most stable band in history!

“The Sick, the Dying and the Dead” it is then. Dave confirmed on this recent cameo video

I was always hopeful it would be James...always loved his playing.
I'm also hoping it would have been James who did the bass on the album but it is strange that it wasn't mentioned in this report so it is also possible that the internet conclusion of Steve DiGeorgio might be a possibility as well.
-
James Lomenzo felt like the only Bass player to get the gig. His work on United Abominations and Endgame was awesome. He’s also a very versatile player, has great stage presence and plays with his fingers which I’ve always preferred in bass players. Very happy he’s back.
A beast of a player
-
^^^
Indeed!
And to boot he's a very very nice guy. I met him back in 2012 with the band Hail and had a very nice long chat with him and Tim and Dave Linsk. Paul Bostaph spent most of the time taking down his drum kit after the show so I didn't get to talk with him at all! But I remember James very fondly, such a nice guy.
-
Zzzptm wrote: He got some old geezer to do it, maybe...
Now, wouldn't THAT have been something! Yes, as Charger commented above, it may have been Steve DiGeorgio who played bass on the new album.
Ted
-
All we need now is the cover artwork and an official release date. Oh and a new song would be awesome also. Tour with LOG starts next week I wonder if we’ll get one then?
Also I’m down with a song by song thread for the new album as well as Maidens new album.
-
Agree, looking forward to the tune-age!
-

I like it... some people have book club, we have album club!
-
Megadeth preforming yesterday in Austin Texas!
First show with James in more than a decade and they're tight as ever!
-
Have watched a bit of their performance since it popped up on YouTube. Sounded ok for a first up performance. Setlist was pretty standard fare but expect it will change up a little as they get into the tour. Also expecting a new song as well. They might release it to streaming services before they play it live. Lomenzo reverts back to only using a pick when he’s in Megadeth. Dave prefers pick style I think.
-
Yeah I think pick playing is Megadeth style.
I too was bit surprised that they didn't feature a new song but I guess they want to officially release it before playing it live...which makes sense I suppose from a marketing point of view.
I was bit surprised that they didn't play something from Endgame...bit surprised at the 3 songs from Dystopia though.
-
Good to see them change up the setlist for the the 2nd show. Swapping out “The Threat is Real” and “Mechanix” for “Take No Prisoners” and “The Conjuring” while adding and extra song in “She Wolf”
Dirk Verbeuren is a solid as fuck drummer!
-
^^
3 things:
- Glad to see Lomenzo having fun being on stage with MegaDave again. I always appreciate this guy.
- Dirk Verbeuren is a beast . His potential is limitless.
- Dave's Gibson Flying V is sublime. Glad to hear about the breach of contract with Dean guitars, I hate their designs. I would love to see the same thing from Michael Schenker's side.
-
^Same, I’m glad Dave ditched Dean and is now with Gibson who have really started to get it together again since the new ownership. I really loved Dave’s Jackson’s guitars so would be cool to see some new sig models based off his old Jackson’s. Kirk Hammett has also recently partnered with Gibson as well so I’m sure there will be new sig model based off his 79 black & white Flying V
-
I too have always liked Gibson's guitars. Naturally the iconic SG is my favourite...but the flying V is a pretty decent design as well although not among my favourites.
-
Gibson Icons series.
They’ve been releasing snippets over the last couple of weeks of Dave’s but here it is in full. Worth an hour of your time and it’s not rehashing all the same stories we already know.
Don’t think Ellefson gets a mention in the whole thing.
-
Do we have a release date for the new album?
-
Nope. But I am assuming it'll be either late this year or early next year.
-
I'm guessing the re-record has delayed things.
-
I'm guessing the re-record has delayed things.
If I gathered correctly the re-recording has now been done and it's in mastering.
-
Just started making a Megadeth collection for my car.
What kind of sucks is that my car screws up a song list longer than 100 songs...as it thinks the number 100 comes after 10! Which is stupid...and I don't think I can make a list of just 100 songs from these guys....I think I need to find a way to make the car understand that 10 is not followed by a number with just an other zero.... :wall:
Thankfully there are few easy albums like So Far... Youthanasia, Risk and United Abominations where there are only one or two songs that can make it but others...yikes.
-
Do you have any say in how they are numbered? Can you make the them 001, 002 etc
-
Do you have any say in how they are numbered? Can you make the them 001, 002 etc
Well fuck me....that might actually have worked...damn...didn't even think of that! :whistling:
They are automatically numbered 01, 02 and so on by the cd extractor software I'm using...but that might just very well solve the problem...sure it would make the song titles bit longer but it doesn't really matter as most titles don't fit entirely on the screen anyways...
-
^^ I go with the 001, 002, 003... 999 prefix method for my MP3s on USB.
I also have to have folders if I have more than 100 or so MP3s on my USB. I then name the folders 001, 002,... and then have 10 or 20 songs per folder so I can skip folders to get ahead.
But now I play everything off of my phone, so I use VLC player and I have it sync with my PC for all playlists and files. My playlists on VLC are relative references, so the ones I build on the PC work if I copy the files over 1:1 to my phone.
-
Well looks like I didn't go to triple digits after all!
My Megadeth collection turned out to be 92 songs...although I did realize that since I don't own a physical copy of Hidden Treasures I left out Angry Again and 99 Ways to die... But I DID remember to include Duke Nukem as a bonus track!
-
Well, when they release the next album, you'll have more than 100.
-
Bugger.... You are quite right...unless the new album sucks...! But I'm not sure I want it to suck just so that I don't have to rename all of the files on my usb-drive...
-
Not to worry: You can follow up with 99 by doing 99aa, 99ab, 99ac, and so on. Up to 99zz, that's up to 676 more songs you can append that way. Even if Megadeth goes punk and does 30 songs per album, that's 22 albums' worth of room, and that's assuming that every one of those punk-metal songs is a winner!
So, I'd go with hoping Megadeth doesn't go punk-metal and let the good songs arrive as they are. :)

Dave has just confirmed that it is indeed Steve DiGiorgio who's playing bass on the new album:
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/dave-mustaine-confirms-steve-digiorgio-played-bass-on-new-megadeth-album/ (https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/dave-mustaine-confirms-steve-digiorgio-played-bass-on-new-megadeth-album/)
-
DiGiorgio seems like a good fit to me. He can certainly play bass!
-
Just seen that Megadeth is opening for 5FDP again. This time on an upcoming US tour. WTF?
-
Are 5FDP *that* big!? I had no idea!
-
Yeah, that's...odd.
-
I'm assuming it's because Dave still doesn't feel ready to do a headliner tour...maybe he doesn't feel 100% yet after all the treatments.
And I guess there has to be some sort of a personal connection between Dave and some members of Death bunch because otherwise it's bit hard to understand...
-
Megadeth doesn't sell tickets in the States like they use to. Not enough of the younger generation have jumped onboard with the older/legacy bands and a lot of older fans have different priorities these days, family etc or have seen them enough times over the years or maybe just moved on altogether.
Dave is probably getting a decent paycheck to support 5FDP without having to deal with all the logistics and risk of being the headliner, especially with cancellations these days due to crew or band members contracting COVID. Shows still go ahead if the support act has to cancel but can’t if the headliner has to cancel but either way he probably still gets paid.
-
That sounds quite plausible to me. Add in the health issues Charger mentioned, and it's a lot easier to let the kids drive the bus and just wake up grandpa from his nap when it's time to rock.
-
I think also with all this covid shit still going around it's more sensible for bands to take joint tours just to lure people in.
Not a lot of bands doing headline tours in Europe either...most just do festival shows this year...which is more than understandable...and even some festivals are still struggling to sell tickets cause people are still scared of covid.
-
Word needs to get out that outdoor events are probably the best places to be: plenty of ventilation!
-
So new Megadeth song is imminent. Friday morning my time in fact. Will most likely also be releasing album artwork for upcoming release “The Sick, the dying and the Dead” along with preorder details of various editions.
Something to look forward to.
-
Indeed...it's been a long time coming. I'm sure it'll be good...but expectations are also dangerously high...because it's been so long.
-
To get you into the mood the full Graspop show is up from the other day.
Band is sounding great and in particular Dave is sounding the best he has in years.
-
^^^ I listened to most of that and you are right the band sounds great!! Also, Dave is sounding wicked on guitar and handling the vocals well. Looking forward to a new Megadeth album, it has been a while now since Dystopia dropped.

That was indeed a great preformance! Loved it!

And here it is…
We’ll Be Back: Chapter l
Sounds Killer!

Pre-Order details
https://thesoundofvinyl.com.au/collections/megadeth
-
That is pretty awesome track...love the riffing...that's back to the roots. Great proper thrash metal!
-
Yep I’m getting vintage 80’s era mixed with modern Endgame era. Theres no escaping some of the vocal lines and phrasing are pretty much a carbon copy of the faster parts in Good Mourning/Black Friday. Really dig the breakdown part, reminds me a little of Disposable Heroes, different but similar feel.
-
After I couple of listens I really like that.
-
Pre-order in place! So maybe sometime mid-September I'll have it. It did let me download the single, so that's cool.
-
That vinyl set would be cool but the price is bit too heavy for me..especially since it doesn't even come with the cd so I'd have to buy that seperately...
So I'm just gonna go with the cd.
-
The price of vinyl is getting out of control. I will be getting the vinyl but are gonna wait until more options and avenues open up. I’m sure there will lots of different colour versions and order options from various online sites from now until the album drops. Seems online ordering is limited to only a few places at the moment.
-
Indeed...especially on official band stores the prices quite often are absolutely ridiculous...but I guess people are willing to pay them...
I'll keep an eye out on Mystic to see if it comes available there at some point...that has been quite cheap atleast so far...
-
Another great performance. This time Hellfest
Once Dave settles into the set he sounds remarkably good. Probably the best his voice has sounded since 2009.
-
Ohh...gotta check that out!
-
Hello, I heard you guys like Megadeth?
-
Hello, I heard you guys like Megadeth?
Nah...I hate Megadeth but because Dave has finnish roots I'm obligated to listen to them!

Just found out that Mustaine's Finnish legacy cannot be ascertained. You're off the hook, if you'd rather not listen to that Megadeth stuff. :D

I think it was his great great grandfather who was Finnish or something along those lines...someone from his father's side anyways...the family name used to be Mustonen which is a some what common Finnish name...
Just watched that Hellfest preformance! Utterly wonderful!
And related news, I had a dream last night where I was filling in for Kiko on lead guitar when Megadeth preformed here in my home village (of less than 100 people) infront of thousands...the song we played was Trust and only about half way through the song I realised that I can't actually play guitar, but went along anyways and had a great time and Dave even gave me hug at the end of the song...
-
Dreams are the best like that!
-
Indeed...the stranger the better!
-
NIGHT STALKERS!
The break in the middle came from nowhere!
Great tune the riffing is insane again...If Dystopia was a step back to the thrash roots this album might take it step further...both of these songs have been thrash through and through!
-
Dave & Co. have really brought the goods this time around.
-
He's laying it down, and I'm picking it up!
-
Another good song, albeit it’s a little on the generic side. Main riff sounds like Slayer. The bass and new riff that kicks in near the end when it sounds like the song is ending sounds great but seems wasted just tacked on at the end. That part is worthy to make the basis of another song. Disappointed with the production and mix on the two new tracks so far though, which doesn’t bode well for the album. It’s very thin and dry sounding and the drums are mixed too low lacking the necessary punch to really drive the songs. Dave and producer Chris Rakestraws ears must be mush.
-
Another new song from Megadeth and another great one!
That main riff is brilliant...has a bit of Tony Iommi in it I'd say...
-
Email from Amazon today letting me know my that The Sick, The Dying... and the Dead will be delivered today. I'll be honest I thought it was next week it was released.... that's not a complaint! ;)
EDIT: And 2 minutes after posting this it pops through the letter box! Yay
-
Awesome Kilo! I am a bit on the fence but as usual with Megadeth albums, I will be picking it up soon. Looking forward to hearing your review.
-
I'm getting my copy next week I hope! Can't bloody wait! Haven't been this excited about a new Megadeth Album in a long time! ... heck not since they last released an album!
-
Mine is en route, should get it about the same time Charger gets his.
-
Picked up the coloured vinyl today. A Father’s Day present to myself.
I’ll give my thoughts a little down the track. Need it to cure for a bit.
-
I'd like to hear from the gang here if it lives up to expectations before I buy it.
-
“We’ll Be Back” is still one of my favourite tracks off the new album.
Killer performance right here
-
Well, updated tracking info shows I'm supposed to get mine the 13th. They must be using pack mules because gas is so expensive. Or something.
-
Mine hasn't shipped yet! So might very well be next week until I get mine too... bugger.
-
Listened to it once, too early to make an assessment really, but some of the songs show promise.
-

Are any of the songs showing signs of disappointment?

Probably a couple but I can't remember which, Dave's vocals aren't always good, but they are better than I thought they would be..
-
Spent the last few days trying to track down a copy, but all that I could find was Vinyl.
I just do not have the room to start collecting records anymore in fact I do not even have enough room for any more CDs either.
I guess I will have to use Amazon or I can special order it at my usual place but they want 20+ so no, thanks.
-
Just got an email that my copy has shipped today...so it'll be way into next week before I get it! .... bugger.
-
To my surprise, it arrived in the mail this morning. Spun side 1, and am currently about half way through side 2. So, not equipped to provide much of a critique yet but so far...good :)
Deluxe edition #05237
(https://www.ddever.net/img/tunes/megadeth_sick.png)
-
It reached top 3 on Billboard:
https://blabbermouth.net/news/megadeths-the-sick-the-dying-and-the-dead-enters-billboard-chart-at-no-3 (https://blabbermouth.net/news/megadeths-the-sick-the-dying-and-the-dead-enters-billboard-chart-at-no-3)
I have listened it through once (second round going on as we speak) and I have to say it is musically brilliant! Maybe even better than Dystopia. Bit more complex I'd say atleast. Some might not like that but I enjoy it a lot.
Dave's vocal melodies are also bit more complex than ever before...that works really well on some tracks but not so well on others. Dave doesn't quite have the voice to pull off some of the more complex melodies....and sometimes he just speaks the lyrics, which again works occationally and then again not.
One thing that has to be mentioned is Dirk's drumming...it is absolutely SUBERB. Probably the best drumming on a Megadeth album ever. He's got the speed of Nick Menza and the swing and power of Gar Samuelson all put into one.
If Dystopia was * * * * ½ star record this might be in the * * * * star range...but I need more listens to fully review this one...but honestly it is great but it does have it's faults.
-
So that's a strong "BUY" signal, I take it? :)
-
Yes, most certainly I'd say.
-
It is unmistakably Megadeth, and though they've been playing this kind of music for decades, it comes across as fresh. Unlike, say, The Rolling Stones. You can hear the years in Dave's voice but he is still able to pull it off. And the musicianship that they all display is world-class.
As for the vinyl, it's a solid release. Mine is quiet and doesn't have that brick-wall of compression thing going on. Very dynamic.
All things considered, a solid B+. Maybe better, haven't listened to it enough but the first time through was exciting and at no point did I want to pull out of a track and go to the next.
-
It also got to No.3 on the UK chart last week.
I think this is the first of their albums to use the ellipsis (…) in the title since the first three albums.
-
It is yes...they have used the three dots in song titles though.
-
Highest ranking Megadeth album of all time!
And we got the first #1!!
-
Ol' Vic seems to have a bit of an extra grin in that picture!
-
Well played, Finland!
-
Finland has been playing it I'd imagine! I know I have! ;D
-
Sadly the new album dropped out of the UK Top 100 albums this week from #3. It happens too often these days, everyone buys it as soon as it comes out and that's it. It will be interesting to see if it fared better in other countries.
-
Yeah...it's more of a flash sale nowadays instead of steadily buying the album over a long period of time like it was before.
I believe the reason to that is information is widely available now...before the internet people didn't find out about a new album that quickly so the sales went on much longer. Nowadays everyone knows the date of a new album coming out months ahead and there's a ton of preorder options too.
-
Most of the fans by in the first week. There’s no word of mouth or radio airplay or any real mainstream exposure to keep pushing the sales. That’s the way it is for most metal bands these days besides Metallica and maybe a couple of others.
-
I still have not been able to track down a copy on CD. Plenty of places have it on vinyl and I keep hearing that the CD version will arrive soon, no luck on my end.
I guess I will have to get it online, though I swore I would not give Amazon a dime again, this might force my hand.
-
^^^
Y'know if I decided not to give my money to Amazon, I'm not sure where I would get CDs from, which were not mainstream artists anyway.
-
There is a Record/CD store in town but for some reason, they do not have it either though they usually have a copy of most notable artists.
Amazon accused me of lying about an order that I never received. It took a few days of fucking around with customer service, but they finally realized that it was a fault on their end. That was about 7 months ago, and I have only made one order just to clear my gift card funds. I had planned on never going back.
-
^^^
That sucks...
I haven't bought much from Amazon lately simply because the cds are pretty expensive there compared to some other stores...but the main store that I used to buy cds (Dodax.co.uk) went out of business few months ago now I have to re-evaluate where to buy stuff...
-
Well, I finally tracked down a copy and it only cost me 16 bucks. Found it at a record store in a nearby mall, and it has two bonus tracks. I almost never go there because they tend to be expensive but this time, they were reasonably priced.
-
Bonus tracks??
What are they called?
-
This Planet's On Fire (Burn In Hell)
Dystopia - Live
-
Other versions have “Police Truck”(Dead Kennedys cover) and the Sammy Hagar cover “This Planets on Fire” with Sammy guesting on he track. Both are great covers.
-
Damnit! I have no bonus tracks on my version and it was the only version available here! Bugger.
-
Is there a way to get all three bonus tracks?
-
Don’t think there’s a physical issue that has both the bonus cover tracks. Only digital. Spotify, Apple Music. But there is some physical issues that have “This Planets On Fire” and a live track, either “The Conjuring” live or “Dystopia” live.
-
Well, I go with digital, so I'll be looking for those bonus tracks.
-
I have been listening to the new album all morning and for some reason, I am just not feeling this record.
It is impressive in some ways but none of the riffs say this is classic Megadeth. I will give it more of a chance
and hopefully it is a grower. I think I like Dystopia better, and that album grabbed me on the very first listen.
-
Musically, I think the album is first rate. On the whole the vocals are weak but work on some of the songs.
Early contenders for best tracks are Dogs of Chernobyl, Mission to Mars and We'll be Back.
-
I tend to agree with that...I love the musical side of the album too! I love the complexity of the songs and the tempo changes and the multitude of riffs per song.
But indeed some of the vocal melodies aren't quite up to par. Dave has somewhat abandoned his usual style and tried to adopt a bit more complex melodies and they just don't suit his style of vocals very well.
I think the Title track, Dogs Of Chernobyl, Killing Time, We'll Be Back and especially the absolutely SUBERB Night Stalkers are the top of the crop...Night Stalkers might be musically the best track since Trust! That tempo change/bridge/break/whatever in the middle is just fantastic!
Life In Hell and Junkie are probably my least favourites. Sacrifice and Celebutante are somewhere in the middle and I haven't quite made up my mind on Solder On and Mission To Mars, both have good things but something about them doesn't fully click.
I can also fully understand Thel's point...this isn't a classic sounding Megadeth album that's for sure!
-
My thoughts of TSTDATD are that musically it’s quite strong in parts, but its also a bit generic and lacks cohesion in other parts.
But I think the biggest issue I have are with Dave’s vocals. With him losing his high range with age he’s also lost personality and variety in his singing. He just sings in that lower gruff voice these days which sounds ok as it is, but singing that same way throughout the whole album limits the songs and they come off sounding a bit flat and repetitive.
Personally I think Dystopia was the better album. The songs were more cohesive and catchier with better vocal melodies and much better production than this new album.
Best songs are We’ll Be Back, title track, Life In Hell, Celebutante, Mission To Mars and Night Stalkers but none of those are better that the best songs on Dystopia.
Id probably give it about a 6.0/10 right now, but that may improve over time.
-
Getting a bit more into the album. Though the last track is listed as Dystopia Live is actually a live version of the Conjuring.
-
Looks like all of us are in an agreement that Dave's vocals and melodies are the big miss on the album and that most part the music is the big hit on the album...
-
I have not listened to the new album in about four to five days now. It has not gripped me as Dystopia did. That said, I will listen to it today a few times and see how it goes.
Have any of you been listening to it?
-
I listened to it a lot but haven't done so in a week or so as I've had other albums I've been listening to...mainly the Chris Caffery ones...but there is no doubt I'll be returning to the album again later this week.
-
I have been listening to a lot of old Anthrax and two new Death live albums I picked up recently.
I want to like the new Megadeth, and I know that it is technically great, but I feel it is sterile.
-
I’ve shelved the album for the time being. Maybe it will click with me more one day but right now it’s in the bottom 3-4 Megadeth albums.
-
I honestly think that Dystopia and even Super Collider have resonated with me more that the new album. The vocals are pretty horrible throughout, and I like Dave's voice most of the time it just seems here that he is phoning it in.
The musicianship works on paper, but the execution is lacking and feels dry and as I mentioned earlier; very sterile.
-
Can't understand the reviewers that raved about it... I caught myself checking how long a song had left on it, and that's an alert that maybe I'm not all that into the track...
-
So I'm the only one here who likes the album? Wow... Nice way to make me realise (once again) that there is something wrong with me...
-
I like it! I've listened to it a few times and it hasn't worn off yet.
I will say that the first time I listened to it, I actually "listened" to it. The rest of the time I just played it while doing other stuff. But that's how I do most music of that variety.
-
It's not a dreadful album by any means, my main gripe was that sometime the vocals were weak or tuneless but musically I really enjoy it. I've left it for a couple of weeks, I'll play it again in the next few days so I should get a better feel for it.
-
So the Knotfest lineup for Australia in March is getting announced tomorrow and Megadeth are apparently on the bill.
-
You going to go see them, Jack? I'd consider it, but Knotfest is a bit out of my way. :)
-
I probably will, only because Megadeth is on the bill and just how starved we’ve been of metal bands touring down here the last few years. I don’t mind Slipknot, Lamb of God, Trivium and In Flames but very rarely go out of my way to listen to them.
-
Well this is really cool. Marty will be back playing with Megadeth at the Budokan show in Tokyo.
https://blabbermouth.net/news/its-official-megadeth-to-reunite-with-marty-friedman-at-tokyo-concert
-
Never thought I'd see that happen - I guess with Friedman being a fixture in Japan at this point, it makes sense. Hopefully the egos will be dialed back a bit and Marty & Dave don't end up hitting each other with their guitars lol.
-
If they do, it'll be as much fun as an Eagles concert! Win-win, I say! :D
Seriously, though, sounds like they're ready to play together again, and that's a good thing.
-
It'll be kind of cool I guess...but ultimately bit pointless. I wonder will they be playing the songs with 3 guitars then or will Marty force Kiko off stage for those songs?
Megadeth are having a pick a song thing on their facebook page where fans can request one song to be played at the live stream....I ponder will they pick the one that gets most votes from Marty's era...
-
Sounds like they’ll have 3 guitarist on stage. It’ll be cool to see Marty jamming with Dave again. Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls and either Symphony of Destruction or Sweating Bullets will be the 3 songs I think.
-
So most likely the band will play their usual set and then bring out Marty for an extended set of encores... Symphony, Sweating and Holy Wars sound about right...would be cool if they'd throw in a rarity of somekind too...but probably not.
-
Been following a thread of this Budokan show with Marty in real time and a lot are commenting how killer sounding the show is and is one of the best live Megadeth shows they’ve heard.
Wishing I had’ve ordered the stream now :wall:
-
Oh it happened already? Yeah ofcourse becuse of the time difference...! Hah! I was thinking it was going to be tonight but ofcourse it's the other way around.
I'm sure clips (or the whole thing) will turn up on youtube at some point.
-
Yeah I got messed up with the Timezone as well. They posted it in US EST and my conversion was was out which had it on in the middle of the night my time and subsequently thought it was going to be prerecorded fixed up and shown a few hours later. I knew Tokyo was only a couple of hours behind Melbourne time.
Apparently Marty played Countdown, Tornado and Symphony with them.
-
Interesting...Countdown was a bit of a surprise...but that he did not join for Holy Wars is pretty strange....
-
I saw some of the performance, but it was a horrible recording and you couldn't hear Dave's voice very well.
-
Marty joined MEGADETH again at WACKEN!!
-
Pretty cool - Dave introducing him was not unexpected but nice to see..."ladies and gentlemen, Marty Friedman, lead guitar" :)
-
Indeed. And it's also really nice to see them enjoying eachother on stage again...and Dave giving Marty the center stage for his solos.
-
Just pulled this up to hit the video to show a friend of mine, and it has already been blocked for copyright issues. Glad I got to see it when I did!
-
Oh damn...that was fast. Stupid youtube.
-
I watched the full show yesterday morning. Great performance, the band is a well oiled machine at this point. Also as Charger said, was awesome they gave Marty the spotlight during his solos.
-
Indeed. I agree. The band is really tight now and Dave is sounding better than in years.
And on that note here's a little interview done by Finnish Chaoszine from last month.
-
I think he sounds really good on certain songs and not so good on others that he can’t get away with not playing. I’d love him to play “Five Magics” more often. Not only is it a brilliant song but a song that sits comfortably within his vocal range these days. “Poison was the Cure” is another from Rust he could pull off quite easily as well.
-
This is pretty cool!
https://blabbermouth.net/news/kiko-loureiro-to-sit-out-next-leg-of-megadeths-tour-temporary-replacement-announced
Finnish guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari is to replace Kiko Loureiro for the upcoming tour as Kiko has family matters he needs to deal with.
I have to say I have never even heard of this guy or his bands Wintersun or SmackBound so this guy coming out of nowhere to play with Megadeth is pretty damn amazing. Must be a like a dream come true.
-
Looks like we might be getting a new MEGADETH song by the end of the week!
-
Thanks for the sharing this information Charger
Always excited about any new Megadeth
-
wait, what?
cooooooooooool

Actually it turned out to be BAD news!
https://blabbermouth.net/news/megadeth-to-release-final-album-in-2026 (https://blabbermouth.net/news/megadeth-to-release-final-album-in-2026)
MEGADETH To Release Final Album In 2026, Embark On 'Farewell' Tour!
"There's so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional," Mustaine says. "Most of them don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.
Dave adds: "We can't wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it's now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it's now. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it's our last studio album. We've made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years. We have done something together that's truly wonderful and will probably never happen again. We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it's played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything."
I have to say I wasn't expecting that! With everything Dave's been through in the past few years it is however somewhat understandable.
-
Yeah, I saw that, very sad but understandable.
-
It's the best way to say goodbye, considering how Ozzy was able to have a great concert prior to to his death.
-
I believe that Dave is turning 64 this year so with all he's been through I guess he wants to exit on his terms
Wish I could see them on this tour
-
NEW MEGADETH IS HERE!!!
This is one hell of a song! Proper Thrash metal right here!
I can already say I like this song more than anything on the previous album which also has some great tunes!
-
Not bad at all... I felt his voice was a lot stronger than on the last album too.
-
video was creeping the hell outta me so I had to scroll past it and just listen...
But daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam Mustaine's sounding GREAT! And the band is at peak performance. Feels like 1987 with this banger.
AVAILABLE JAN 23 2026
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
BUT I WANT IT NOW
-
Heck yeah, that's great!
