Please list your top 5 favorite Black Sabbath songs, followed by your top 5 near-misses. I put forth this request for 2 main reasons:
1) I have to change my top 5 favorite list now that one of Sabbath's newer tunes has been time tested.
2) I don't believe this list has been compiled yet, at The Community.
I included a top 5 near-misses request, because I love so many Black Sabbath songs that I hate to leave out of the top 5. But please restrict each list to 5. After the great majority has participated, I will release some statistical results which should be interesting. Thanks. :)

My top 5 favorites list in a chronological order. The band's most recent song on this list is the change I mentioned above. I feel it is just a fantastic tune.
The Wizard
Wheels Of Confusion
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Heaven And Hell
Season Of The Dead
My top 5 near-misses. It was more difficult for me to determine this list than the first one. It is also in a chronological order.
War Pigs
Into The Void
Supernaut
Symptom Of The Universe
Over To You
-
My top five
Looking For Today
The Writ
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Sweet Leaf
Shockwave
near misses
The Wizard
Killing Yourself To Live
Spiral Architect
Supernaut
Lord Of This World

Oh boy...
I'm gonna have to think about this for a while...
-
Like Charger, I think this will need some consideration... I will come up with an answer... but long ago I realised that when I've said Sabbath song "ABC" is a top 10 Sabbath song and then listed all of those I would have a good 20 songs... I may have to split my answer into Ozzy, Dio and Others!!
-
Okay....this is NOT an easy task...and on some other day the listing might look different..part from the first 3 I think...
Top 5
1. Megalomania
2. The Sign Of The Southern Cross
3. Heaven And Hell
4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
5. Lonely Is The Word
Almost on the list (or on some other day ON the list)
1. Computer God
2. N.I.B.
3. Lord Of This World
4. Falling Off The Edge Of The World
5. Follow The Tears
I Witness almost made the list as well, but Follow The Tears is so epic it had to be on the list.
As you can see my list is bit short on what you'd call greatest hits...I was thinking about where to place War Pigs but honestly that song as great as it is has suffered a massive inflation over the years...
EDIT:
In order to follow the very strict (;D) rules I've made the lists 5 and 5 now...no splits.

I hear you, and I know it is difficult, but try not to split eras.

Top 5
1. Megalomania
2. The Sign Of The Southern Cross
3. Heaven And Hell
4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath / Symptom Of the Universe
5. Lonely Is The Word
I had to cheat a bit there cause SBS and SOTU are so close...so close.
This would mean that "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath / Symptom Of the Universe" would be both 4 and 5, and "Lonely Is The Word" would be forced into the near-misses. Then you would have to remove one of your other near-misses.
I know it is tough and, like you said, it could change week to week. But this is just a "fun" experiment and nothing is set in stone.

But I cannot drop Lonely Is The Word from the top 5...because it is a top 5 song for sure...
Oh man...This is fun...but it is HARD! I might return to this in a bit....But it would mean either SBS or SOTU would be out though.

Top 5
Heaven And Hell
Falling Off The Edge Of The World
Die Young
Neon Knights
The Sign Of The Southern Cross
Near Misses
Voodoo
Over and Over
The Mob Rules

Bible Black

^^^^ Wow, no Ozzy era at all? I gotta think some more and look at all the song titles and try to make a decision. This will be tough.
-
Ok, as Charger says this might be completely different tomorrow, but today it is:
Top 5
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Symptom of the Universe
Too Late
When Death Calls
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle
Next 5
Fairies Wear Boots
Air Dance
Spiral Architect
Over & Over
Computer God
No room in thi list for the 13 other songs I might at some time have said were top 10 songs! :)
-
OK, Keeping to Typhon's tight rules, because he will not suffer tomfoolery in his house! :)
TOP 5
Falling Off the Edge of the World
Spiral Architect
Die Young
Megalomania
Lost Forever
OOOH SO CLOSE
I Witness
Lonely Is the Word
Looking for Today
I
The Thrill of It All
^ Those are my tracks. If I was allowed only 10 Sabbath songs to burn to a CD, all others deleted, never to be heard again by my ears, those would be my 10 songs. Would I want 11? Or 20? Or 80? Sure. But if it was just 10, I'd make them these 10.

I mostly listen to the Dio era, I like Ozzy, but those are my main Sabbath songs, my top ten.
-
Well, I couldn't make it out of the Ozzy era because of the multitude of great songs. So my list is as follows in no particular order:
1. Hand of Doom
2. Into the Void
3. Symptom of the Universe
4. Megalomania
5. Johnny Blade
Honorable Mentions:
6. Warning
7. Lord of this World
8. The Straightener
9. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
10. Snowblind
-
1. Symptom of the Universe
2. Heaven and Hell
3. Supernaut
4. Iron Man
5. The Writ
Near misses
1. Die Young
2. Children of the Grave
3. Falling off the Edge of the World
4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
5. Under the Sun/Every Day Comes and Goes

You really shouldn't allow your overexposure to a song to detract from its excellence.
-
^^Agree. Which is why I included Iron Man. Forget how overplayed it is. Break that song down into its many movements and the story it tells and think "this actually came out in 1970" It's staggering! Nothing would've come close to being anything like it when it came out. You could say that about a lot of Sabbath's early work but especially Iron Man.
-
You know Typhon rules are made to be broken. :D
However I will stick with the rules, but if we do an ac/dc one, I can/will not keep it at 5 each.
Top five
War Pigs
Wheels of Confusion
National Acrobat
Heaven and Hell
The Sign of the Southern Cross
Near Miss
Iron Man
A Hard Road
Over To You
Walk Away
Falling off the Edge of the World

Exactly why I included War Pigs. :pub:

That's the thing now isn't it...it is really hard to do that when you already get a bit annoyed when you hear the song...granted not as much as lets say Paranoid or Iron Man but still.
That being said...War Pigs has never been among my absolute favourite Sabbath songs. Even on Paranoid I'd choose Electric Funeral over it.

I was actually glad to see there were some complaints about the 5 and 5 limitation. It told me that there is still a lot of passion here concerning Sabbath's music.
After a few more members submit their choices, I will release some statistics. Hope to hear from 8bit, Axefiend, JStheConqueror, Scott, Sicko, Tyr66.
-
Stat number one... looks like me and KDC are the only ones so far to mention a Martin-era track. :smug:

I should have also listed Ted. :-[

Also, Charger has not finished his list.
Yes I have...edited it a while back already. ;)

I heard that JS.
-
I have to consciously think about the individual songs from their first three albums, because in my head they are each one long song.
Regardless, here's my 5 x 5:
Hits:
The Wizard - Fantastic, timeless music.
Wicked World - Social consciousness with a Black Sabbath spin.
Into the Void - Social consciousness with a hard-driving riff.
Wheels of Confusion - You can hear the debauched lifestyle dripping from this song.
Hole in the Sky - Straight ahead, aggressive head-banging tunage.
Near Misses:
The Shining - Either vocalist, this is a well done song.
Seventh Star - I can't explain it, have always loved this song.
The Mob Rules - Raw power with Dio!
Children of the Sea - Courageously facing the freezing wind and sea on a mission of destiny.
Heaven and Hell - Social consciousness with Dio!
-
A whole lot of Hughes and Martin songs now.
-
Well, I think I have given ample time for those that wished to participate to do so. I was hoping for all to contribute, but so be it. I want to thank everyone who submitted their selections. Statistics will be coming forthwith! :)

That's awesome!
-
Nice job Typhon.
-
Well you went above and beyond with the stats! Awesome!
So based on this our favourite Sabbath songs are Symptom Of The Universe and Heaven And Hell which based on previous H&H games and such is not a surprise at all...

Thanks for the acknowledgements. I am a numbers guy, so when I say stats, I really mean stats. Plus the enjoyment of dealing with the music I love the most.
I was most impressed by the last category. The albums from which the most songs were used. Shows how many albums have so many great tunes. That combined list boasts 7 of the Great 8.
-
I don’t understand the stats, if it were a number one list type of thing, I’d understand but 5 5 5, I don’t understand.

The number in () refers to the amount of times a song appeared in the aforementioned list, or the number of times an album was the source for a song which appeared in the aforementioned list.

Thanks very much for doing this, I took a while in getting around to looking at the results, but they were worth the wait. :)
