Title: Merry Christmas to some?
Post by: Typhon on December 13, 2018, 08:50:35 AM
There are now people on this earth whose number 1 goal in life is to find some way to be offended.  These so called "justice warriors" are now attacking the classic Christmas song Baby It's Cold Outside.  Many radio stations across North America are giving in to the pressure by agreeing to ban the song from their airwaves.

One man who is stepping up to stop this injustice, Captain James T. Kirk!  Have a look.

I do an oldies show with my mom on Saturday mornings. I'm in charge of lining up the Christmas songs for the show just before Christmas Day - we'll play one or two per week in the weeks leading up to the holiday show.

Although I love, absolutely love Louis Jordan and think that his duet with Ella Fitzgerald on the song is musically amazing, I played the song only once on the show, years ago when I started doing the holiday segment. After that, I realized I was uncomfortable with a song that potentially involved slipping a date a mickey. To me, that's in the category of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" and "Christmas at Ground Zero." It's not the holiday song I'm looking for.

I like tunes that are fun, songs of faith, and music about getting with family and friends.

In the "fun" category, there's lots of unmined mirth out there, such as "Christmas in Jail", "Mambo Santa Mambo", "Merry Twist-mas", and "Santa Claus Meets the Purple People Eater."

There's also the seasonal creep issue. Powers That Be decided that a whole corpus of songs that were about cold weather were Christmas Songs (TM) and to be played from November 1 to December 25, then no more. "Jingle Bells" was originally sung around Thanksgiving time, when the weather turned favorable for sleighing. "Let It Snow", "Little Jack Frost, Get Lost", and "Baby, It's Cold Outside" are other examples of songs that got needlessly Christmasified.

There are a few other Louis Jordan songs we don't play on the show, but the same can be said for a few other artists (looking right at Chuck Berry as I say this) who wrote lyrics that, upon later review, are messages we don't feel comfortable about. When Chuck Berry sings about cars and the USA and rock and roll, that's fine. When he sings about finding girls attractive in a way that seems a lot like intent to commit statutory rape, we give those a pass.

But back to Mr. Jordan's classic... I've already cut it from my playlist, years ago. If other DJs want to drop it or keep it, it's up to them to decide.

Human stupidity knows no boundaries that is for sure!

I am so glad that Bill has taken a stand in this as well. That man is a planetary treasure!

I love the Dean Martin version of this song. Political correctness be damned.

They are also banning Christmas Story the movie which plays in marathon mode on Christmas Day on cable, because it promotes bullying.

Believe that bullshit?

Utterly ridiculous. I don't know when that song was released but it took until 2018 for someone to have a problem with it? Or banning Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer because he was bullied and his father through him out? And now you're saying they are banning A Christmas Story? This is just ludicrous. Some people just need something to bitch about.

Like the time somebody balked at Donald Duck because he didn't wear any pants. C'mon people lighten up.

Yeah I wish...

But nowdays there are actually people out there that are looking for different ways to get "offended". It's pretty much their lifes mission. I honestly don't understand that. But it's almost like some people are addicted to being offended.

In all seriousness, it may be a mental disorder.

Not true. TBS confirmed that they're showing the movie all day.

However, those rats play a sped-up, scene-chopped version of the film that is absolutely unwatchable. I got the real thing on DVD and play it through.
