Title: Junior's Eyes
Post by: Zzzptm on December 07, 2018, 06:24:59 PM
Listening to it now after it's been a long while since I last gave it a spin...

I've listened to a lot of other stuff from the 70s in the last few months, and this really is a track that stands above a lot of what was out there. Not just Captain and Tennille, but class bands like Mott the Hoople and Slade, who, let's face it, didn't always have the luck in the studio that matched what they could do live.

The drum and bass on this track really keep it all together. It's true that your band won't go far if it doesn't have a good rhythm section.

One of many tracks that stands out from the Never Say Die album.  The term "unique" comes to mind.

Junior's Eyes is one of the three listenable songs on NSD.

Bear in mind that "Killing Yourself to Live" came up two tracks later and I could definitely tell the difference. But there was also "Keep It Warm" and "Kiss of Death" after it, as well. I like both of those last two tracks, but "Junior's Eyes" was clearly a cut above them. It's a cleaner song that makes sense all the way through. There are passages in KIW and KoD that kinda get off the main plot, JE doesn't suffer from that issue.

This is also true of Over To You and Johnny Blade.

agreed , plus Air Dance and its fabulous soft jazzy bridge (2'25 to 3'30). the guitars/pianos parts is just fantastic.

When Ozzy sings "You're coming home again tomorrow" is he referring to a wake in the home? Awesome track, awesome album.

It's my favourite song off one of their best albums.

I’m surprised no one here has mentioned Hard Road, possibly the best song on the entire album.

Well, I'd already jammed out to that one earlier in the day. This was kind of my re-exposure to this song after a long time of not spinning it and finding it to my liking.

The album is okay, I can’t stand Breakout or the Bill Ward song, atrocious at best.

I don't really like the title track that much, and I have to be in the right frame of mind to like Breakout, but the rest of the album I really like (including Swinging The Chain).

I don’t like the sound Of Bill Ward singing, that goes for It’s Alright from Technical Ecstasy.

Where's my buddy Billy when I need him. He and I always stick up for Breakout and Swinging the Chain. I think Bill's voice fits this song perfectly and it's a really heavy tune. Can't picture Ozzy singing this song. Bill's gritty vocals fit the material.

As far as Breakout, everybody is hung up on the horns. That's what makes this song unique, and I think it works great as an intro.
