Title: Metal Church!
Post by: Charger on October 04, 2018, 11:49:54 AM
The fantastic METAL CHURCH are going to release a new album on December 7th called DAMNED IF YOU DO!!!

https://www.ratpakrecordsamerica.com/metal-church (https://www.ratpakrecordsamerica.com/metal-church)

I just pre-ordered the CD/T-Shirt bundle! Can't bloody wait!!

XI was Album of the year in 2016 so I wonder can this do the same....it's gonna be going up against some fantastic albums like, Forever Warriors, Forever United by Doro, The Redemption Of William Black from Blaze Bayley and the fantastic Dream Child debut Until Death We Meet Again...but I'm thinking if anyone can top those albums it's Metal Church with Mike Howe at the healm!

XI was a great comeback album for the band. It was a very strong record and I am sure that they will be able to come up with more Metal greatness.

Looking forward to the new album. Hasn't been a great year for releases so a new Metal Church album will be welcome, especially given the strength of their last studio album.

Been listening to Damned If You Do pretty much non stop since I got it...

Gotta say it is pretty awesome.

Very classic MC. But there is one little gripe though...usually they've always had atleast one or two bigger tracks...this album is pretty much only filled with fast rockers. I would have loved to hear a bit more massive and versatile track like End Of The Age or Anthem To The Estranged...

But the riffs rock and Mike's vocals are still out of this world awesome! Album of the year material this one for sure!

Given Damned if you do four listens so far and it's gotten better with each listen. Reviews have been mixed online that I've seen which I don't get becuase if you loved XI you can't not love this album. I'd say it's at least the equal of XI and might even edge it out. A little too early for me to put it in album of the year category and it's gonna take a lot to beat Firepower but I think its definitely in the top five conversation.

I'm pretty ignorant of many of these types of bands but that is actually rather good, I may have to delve into their back catalogue, so where to start!

If you like the sound of that, you are probably best to check out their two most recent albums, XI and Damned If You Do. You could also go back to their 1989 album Blessing in Disguise which was their first album with current singer Mike Howe. I love their first two albums but they were with with a different singer who is a little more of an acquired taste and are a little more thrashier.

Heard that one a while ago!

Preordered the signed album too!

XI is a masterpiece so that's a good place to start. I think I'd go with The Human Factor instead of Blessing personally as I prefer that one...but honestly all Mike Howe albums are brilliant!

I haven't actually played it yet. I've had a busy weekend and wanted to finish listening to some other stuff I had started first. Hopefully get to listen to it over the next couple of days! :)

I have now listened to XI - only the once mind - my first impressions are that it is an interesting album and that it will probably grow on me. It's not really what I was expecting, it is more "mainstream" metal while I was expecting something a little more "extreme"!

I do think that the song Soul Eating Machine will become a must skip quite quickly! But I think Suffer Fools and Fan the Flames could become my favourites.
Title: Re: Metal Church!
Post by: Charger on March 11, 2020, 04:57:12 PM
Hahah! Yeah they're good old school metal!

I have to say for the longest of times I thought Metal Church was some extreme thrash or something too and never really even bothered listening to them...Only when Chris Caffery joined them shortly for a tour that I got interested and found out they were something totally different!

Soul Eating Machine is probably my least favourite too...Suffer Fools again is one of my favourites so I'm glad to see we see eye to eye on that one! :)

Have a listen to their early work Kilo if you want something a little more  thrashy but still very catchy and classic with thunderous drumming and rougher vocals.

When their self-titled debut came out, I was floored. For me, it still stands tall.

I have to admit I never got into those two first ones...the vocals are bit off and the production is horrid.

Agreed. It was so good. The debut is still my main go to album. Nothing wrong with the production for its time. Was a lot better sounding than most of the thrash debuts back then. David Wayne was a great and unique vocalist. Stellar album.
Title: Re: Metal Church!
Post by: Charger on March 13, 2020, 09:11:10 AM
Wayne's voice reminds me a lot of Jon Oliva.

The sound on the debut is bit too muddy for my liking. Although I don't have the remastered version which probably is better.

I agree XI is a monster. But there are some really good tracks in From The Vault too...been listening to that non stop since I got it pretty much...

The Human Factor should be your next pick. ;)

I’d probably rank the first 5 albums in order, then XI and Damned. A Light In the Dark is the best of the Ronny Munroe fronted albums. Masterpeace was a rather disappointing attempt to reunite with David Wayne.

Metal Church have announced their new singer.

It's Marc Lopes.

I have no idea who he is nor have ever heard anything from him but the little song snippet they released on facebook sounds really good. Marc seems to have a voice that is a bit of a mix between Jon Oliva and Mike Howe...I think he'll be a great fit for the band...ofcourse no one can ever replace Mike but I am also happy that the band decided to carry on.

That single seems a little heavier than I'm familiar with, it sounds great though! Marc Lopes has a similar singing style to Mike Howe which seems sensible.

I shall definitely be getting it (May 26)

The singer sounds more like David Wayne to my ears, but you can hear a bit of Mike in there as well. Not a fan of the screaming at the end if every line, makes it sound a little generic. Musically very strong, expect nothing less from Kurt though. The guy is a genius with riffs and constructing songs.

Thanks for posting that Charger - I get a strong "keeping the faith" vibe from it. You know, over the years I have always been happy that Metal Church kept plugging away at their craft. When they first hit the scene, I was hesitant to pick up their record because I thought the name was goofy and that they'd be another of the hundreds of low-rent bands trying to ride the metal wave of the time.

But I bought it, and loved the hell out of it. When a band is as good as Metal Church, they could have named themselves "The Sparkling Jack-Offs" and it wouldn't matter. Plus, I quickly came to accept their name and can't imagine calling them anything other than Metal Church.

Wonder how much the VIP tickets are going to go for. Looks like Thursday morning they'll be available along with the normal tickets. I saw them in concert once - with Slayer - sometime in the mid-eighties. Was visiting a friend of mine who had just moved to a place outside of Seattle, Washington and they happened to be playing while I was there. I remember going to the venue (there were four of us) and I remember it rocked hard, but can't recall much else.

Tickets we $12.00. Which I thought was expensive because back home they averaged $8. lol

Post by: Jack the Stripper on May 16, 2023, 07:57:56 AM
I’d say VIP will be around $160 which is good value. I probably won’t do VIP. I previously had met Mike and Kurt after the show in 2019 for free. They both just casually came out about 30 minutes after the show to say hello about 6 fans that had hung around for a drink at the front bar. Didn’t have anything with me to get signed though as I didn’t know I was going to meet them dam it, but got a photo with each of them and had a good chat.

Very cool!

I was supposed to meet the guys on their 2020 tour, but ofcourse that tour never happened.

I hope they'd do a european tour, but that is very unlikely due to the insane costs here...pretty much every band is canceling their European tours now...

Did you order that straight from the Rat Pack store? I did so with the signed cd...I've ordered stuff from there before and it takes quite a while to arrive.

I was thinking about the marble one too as it was 2 euros cheaper than the splatter one (at atomic fire records) but I went with the splatter one as I liked it more. Also limited to 500 copies.

Amazon. Couldn’t find the splattered vinyl for under $80 delivered where’s the marble cost me $63 delivered. I would’ve went for the splatter if I could’ve found it for a decent price.

Finally got a chance to play the album!

I'm really liking it. I'm not 100% sold on Mark Lopes' vocals yet though...but ofcourse I'm comparing him to Mike Howe and no one can match his voice though...

Musically this is maybe bit thrashier than the previous 2 albums...
