Title: Ken Burns' Vietnam Documentary
Post by: Zzzptm on September 18, 2018, 04:06:18 PM
I just finished episode 10 of the series, which I think is something like 18 hours in total.

It was definitely worth it. It made me re-evaluate what I had thought about the Vietnam War over the years, as it presented me with a holistic view of the conflict. I come away from the documentary unable to entirely condemn the whole affair, but also unable to entirely praise it, either.

I have always had great respect for American soldiers, the vast majority of them, and this certainly underlined that respect.

The people of Vietnam were doomed, however, once their fight for freedom got support from the Communist Bloc. The Communists were truly awful. The corrupt government in the South was better for Vietnam, but only when compared to the horrors of the Communists.

It's a series well worth exploring. It's nowhere preachy and we are shown a wide range of oral history sources as well as original materials.
