1980 - A watershed year in metal and and hard rock. So many great albums were released that would come to be viewed as all-time classics!
But which album is the greatest from that year?
Vote for what you consider to be the best five albums of 1980.
Once this poll is done and we have a winner we'll move onto 1981 and so on...
Then we'll put all the winners from the years 80-89 up against each other to determine the greatest metal/hard rock album from 80's.
I think I've got the list covered and maybe a little too much but it saves someone posting "man you left off this or that" ::)
Poll will run for 5 days before closing.
Vote away :headbanger:
Mod Edit:
Beat -> Best

so hard to choose !
I must let down so many like first MSG , Trust , Ozzy , Motörhead , Saxon , UFO , Diamond Head ...
I never know if I should choose in relation to what I felt in 1980 or my current feelings towards these pivotal albums, so I do with both
-
That's a good way to vote TYR. First impressions should always be taken into account, especially when you're finding it hard to seperate a bunch of albums.
I found five that were clear cut. Originally I was gonna make it three but that made it near on impossible for me and I assume for everyone else so I decided on five.
-
Took me a while to figure out what there was to beat in this one...
But I guess you meant Best... ;D
Anyways...a great idea for a poll indeed.
Pretty easy choices here
Heaven And Hell
British Steel
Ace Of Spades
Blizzard Of Ozz
Iron Maiden
Gillan is left out just barely...the other albums don't even compare to these...not even close.
-
They were my choices too Charger. A lot of great albums there but couldn't go past those five.
I actually hit post the topic by accident(workong on an iPad) before I could go over everything and make sure I had everything spot on and then saw it said beat :o ::)
-
Well I fixed it for you bud! ;)
I got inspired by this actually and went on and did a Top 5 albums list on my facebook too with some added notes...I'll copy it here too:
#5:
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
(Musically Maiden was ready to go with the first one...but what brings the album down ofcourse are the vocals from Paul DiAnno that are okay at best...and that is being bit generous)
#4:
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz
(Ozzy's first solo album is a cracker and Randy Rhoads' guitar playing is out of this world and Bob Daisley's lyrics are for the most part great!)
#3:
Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
(Album features Motörhead's biggest hit but there is so so so much more going on here like Shoot You In the Back, Fast And Lose, We Are The Road Crew and Fire Fire just to name a few...incredible album from start to finish)
#2:
Judas Priest - British Steel
(Priest's most even album of all time...not a single bad song. Eventhough Rob holds his screams to a minimum on the album it still features some fantastic vocal preformances)
#1:
BLACK SABBATH - HEAVEN AND HELL
(Sabbath's second coming was incredibly strong and the beyond suberb vocals and lyrics of the master Ronnie James Dio were not a small part of that. But Tony Iommi is back with the fire in his riffs and solos that he had in the early days of the band! H&H not only remains as one of Black Sabbath's best albums ever but one of Heavy Metal's biggest classics of all time)
-
Is it alright to vote for less than 5? I'm afraid I am unfamiliar with most of these. My knowledge on metal is limited. :-[
-
By all means Typhon. Vote as you want.
@Charger, I noticed I didn't put the Scorpions next to Animal Magnetism, can you add that?
-
However, great idea for all these coming threads, Jack :pub:
-
@Charger, I noticed I didn't put the Scorpions next to Animal Magnetism, can you add that?
Done.
-
I picked 7 to start with, then dropped the two I felt weren't totally up to the level of the other five.
-
And this is going to be a fun adventure, watching how metal developed through the 80s.
-
^^^ Yup
Well, i had to go for the classics...
AC/DC - Back In Black
Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Judas Priest - British Steel
-
Fun idea, I went with
Sabbath
AC/DC
Rush
Judas Priest
Ozzy
... but I feel I should have gone for Motorhead perhaps instead of Ozzy or JP.
-
Only 3 votes for me:
AC/DC
Ozzy
Sabbath
-
Looks like Heaven And Hell could rightfully win this...BUT what if we get a tie? Do we have to put those two against each other then on a seperate poll?
-
Yeah might have to do that Charger or maybe their can be joint winners that both go in?
Only 8 members have voted so far though.
Vyn, Sicko, Thel, 8bit, JS, Scott, Diiscman possibly only one of you have voted, so would be good if the rest of you joined the voting.
-
Yes...come on people get some voting done! It's your civic duty after all! :)
-
Thanks for the notification in the other thread Jack, I hadn't even seen this!
So, lots to choose from, all of them worthwhile.
I went with:
AC/DC - Back in Black. Brian Johnson's freshman outing with the boys set the template for every damn song they did thereafter. But man did it rock in all of its teen aged misogynistic glory.
Thin Lizzy - Chinatown. Not their best, but kept the flag flying. I recall many fans at the time not liking it much, but looking back I think that had more to do with them being butt hurt about Moore leaving than anything.
Saxon - Wheels of Steel. The title track recommends it all on its own.
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz. Same reason as Heaven and Hell got the nod.
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell. Same reason as Blizzard of Ozz.
-

Such great reasoning ;D
-
Already voted a while ago.
Back In Black - AC/DC
Heaven And Hell - Black Sabbath
Cultosaurus Erectus - BOC
Frost And Fire - Cirith Ungol
Blizzard Of Ozz - Ozzy Osbourne
-
Such great reasoning ;D
I typed a 29 page response detailing my reasoning behind picking Heaven and Hell as well as Blizzard of Ozz, but I fat-fingered the posting process and accidentally deleted it instead. But it basically said the same thing, so I said fuck it.

Thanks for your votes fellas, still a couple of days for the rest of you's to vote.
Just on those that haven't yet voted, it occurred to me today that I failed to mention Axefiend on the list as someone that hadn't yet voted. Maybe if was a case of out of sight out of mind as it seems he hasn't been around for quite awhile.
First and foremost, I hope al is ok with Axefiend. It always makes you wonder if everything is ok in one's life when they were seemingly quite an active poster then suddenly just disappear for weeks and months.
-
This is a great idea!
I went with the following:
Back in Black
Heaven and Hell
Blizzard
British Steel
Women and Children First
-
I voted for these 5
Blizzard
Heaven and Hell
Cultösaurus Erectus
Frost and Fire
Ace of Spades

So is the winner here with the most votes or are we taking the top 5 and doing a hurt/heal type of thing?
-
^^^^^^
I think it is 1 winner for each year.
-
I'd just like to see the top 5 vote-getters of each year, then we get the top 50 metal albums of the 80s.
-
I have voted:
AC/DC
BS
SAXON
JP
VH
-
Sorry Bog, For some reason I assumed you had already voted otherwise I would've definitely mentioned your name :-[
-
No problem Jack, I'm in now.
-
So the top five metal albums of 1980...
Back in Black
Ace of Spades
Blizzard of Ozz
British Steel
Heaven and Hell
I remember a show on a radio station I liked back in the 80s, KZEW in Dallas, that was called "Seventh Day". They'd play seven albums, all the way through, and only interrupt between sides and for station identification. Of course all the kids were taping directly off the radio on cheap 90-minute crap cassettes, but that was only before we could save up the money to buy the album in the store.
Anyway, if I was the DJ in charge of that show and added Women and Children First and Cultosaurus Erectus to that lineup, I'd have one of the best shows of the year.
-
Kind of a expectable result I would say...Bit surprised that Maiden only got 4 votes though...
It is interesting to see how a lot of votes were very varied...lot's of single votes...
But please tell me who was the one who did NOT vote for Heaven And Hell so I can ban him instantly!
:awesome:
:problem:
:haha1:

^^^ You know exactly who it was!! :o
-
^^^ You know exactly who it was!! :o
And I would surmise this certain someone also voted for Iron Maiden... and when Di'Anno steps out of Maiden, he'll be voting for Gillan and Born Again...
-

Yea, the socialist. >:(
-
Ah yes ofcourse...I should have known...
Damn Billy... :P
-
Goes without saying Heaven and Hell was a deserving winner and somewhat obvious given our history of where we've come from. I too was a little surprised with Maiden's lack of votes.
Will get 81 voting underway later on today(Oz time)
-
I too was a little surprised with Maiden's lack of votes.
For me the first Iron Maiden album lacks the greatness that follows on Killers and the Dickinson albums. A good record - just the worst of their classic 7.
-
Where are you getting your list of albums each year? The "hits" are obvious but some on this list I'd not heard of before, and I presume you are not a living encyclopeadia! :P

Wikipedia is a good friend sometimes... :)

Good question. I actually own the majority of albums in this poll and do have quite a photographic memory on years albums were released, moreso if I own it and you gave me the name of an album and asked me what year it came out rather than just reeling them all off if you gave me the year.
Anyway, to answer your question I try and remember what I can and also use rate your music and Wikipedia for everything else. Obviously I'll have to heavily rely on these sites more as we move through the years as metal was growing bigger and bigger and so many new bands and albums were coming out.
-
^^^ Cool... just make sure you don't miss any of our favourite albums... you'll never hear the end of it! ;)
-

Well, what can i say? I've got a great taste in music... :smug:

I mean, I'm honored that you would do such a service for me for my funeral.
But, at the same time, I didn't know you were making plans for my final exit...
