Title: Remembering RONNIE JAMES DIO (1942-2010)
Post by: Charger on May 16, 2018, 08:43:47 AM
A special thread to remember the greatest singer that ever lived mr. RONNIE JAMES DIO...

Ronnie passed away on May 16th 2010....8 years ago....can't believe it's been that long....I remember that sunday like it was yesterday....my heart dropped and missed several beats and broke.

On this day there will be nothing but Ronnie's music playing.

So lets post some our favourite songs and videos here in remembrance and why not some memories and stories as well.

Truth is the world is a bit less of a place because Ronnie's not here....it lacks a one of a kind preformer, musician, song writer, singer, a very kind person and a whole heap of magic.

I'll kick things off with this fabulous live version of one of the best songs Ronnie ever did from one of the best albums he ever preformed on....
I didn't want to choose a version from Wacken or Radio City because everyone's seen them a 100 times, but this version comes from Kavarna Bulgaria during the Heaven & Hell tour of 2007...and the song ofcourse is FALLING OFF THE EDGE OF THE WORLD!

Here's a song that I wish RAINBOW would have done live but they never did...and it took DIO a whole 20 years to bring this one out but I am super glad that they did...I remember being at the 2nd or 3rd show of the Master Of The Moon Tour back in June of 2004 and when Ronnie introduced this song I nearly fell to my knees...what a bloody treat. That was the Tuska Open Air back in 2004 and this version comes from Philadelphia...Ronnie's in incredible voice and Craig Goldy's playing is just out of this world...

Oh cool! Haven't heard that one in a while! Forgot all about it!

Here's one of Black Sabbath's best songs:

and a fantastic prefromance from the Metal Masters Tour back in 2008!

Amazing how Dio pretty much only lost hair between the 70s and the 2000s... his voice kept very well.

Just wish Blackmore kept the fire burning, but, alas, his seasons definitely changed...

Today's a special day again to remember the Greatest singer in the history of music mr. RONNIE JAMES DIO who would be celebrating this birthday today...

But eventhough he is not with us anymore his music and legacy lives on...and on....and on.

Here's Ronnie preforming in Lahti Finland on the last ever tour with DIO back in 2008:

Would've turned 76 and probably still performing today had he lived and singing his heart out giving 110% as he always did...

It feels unreal that it has really been 9 years since we lost Ronnie...

I was just going through some of my old pictures and came across couple of really nice ones I took at the Helsinki show back in 2009...

Love that angelic light shining upon him...

Let's take this day to remember the man and play his music LOUD just like he would have wanted.

Bless you Ronnie...You truly were one of a kind.

This year I have been mostly listening to some deeper cuts from Ronnie's career...focusing especially on stuff that was either never or rarely played live...

Like this one from the stellar MAGICA album:

Also this one:

The very last DIO song ever to be released...I remember when I first heard this back in 2009 I was in awe just how brilliant it was and now nearly 10 years later it hasn't lost a beat...still fantastic! Considering the incredibly long career Ronnie had the fact that he could still do a song as incredible as this is mind boggling to say the least.

It also makes me so so incredibly sad as Magica part II would have been one hell of an album if this song was any kind of an indication...Not to mention just how much the story meant to Ronnie himself...it pains me that he never got to finish it....

Yeah, but with limited appearances and stuff like that. Old is old...

And did you know he was also a session player in New Jersey back in the 50's? He played the trumpet, so that got him a lot of gigs in studio backup bands. You can barely hear the trumpet on "My Boyfriend's Back", but that's RJD tooting away on it!

McCartney is 77 and still touring playing 3 hour shows.

Quite true...however Metal is much harder to do than soft rock...and Ronnie never half assed on stage...

Yep but a lot of the Beatles and Wings songs are still quite demanding though and he's also lumping a bass around.
3 hrs on stage for a musician playing an instrument at 77 is quite incredible let alone singing as well.

That's Paul McCartney, he's a lucky one. Bill Wyman had to retire from the Stones, John Lord had to bow out of DP, Bill Ward is his own special case, Tina Turner is retired, Bob Dylan is on the back burner, and Donald Fagen even takes it slow these days.

Been listening to Dio in the weeks leading up so I’m a little Dio’d out atm.

I’ve often pondered if he was still with us today whether he’d still be performing. I just could never envisage him retiring.

Agreed. I think he would have continued to perform until he was physically incapable of providing fans with a good time. He always struck me as someone who really gave a shit about putting on a great show for the people who came to hear/see it, not simply to capitalize on his fame and rake in cash.

And remember, this is what he was up to in 1958.  I think it's the most metal anyone got, that early. The technology didn't even support decent bass amps or fuzz pedals, but he still managed to cook up the heavy back in the late 50s.

I remember Ronnie saying that he would retire when he turned 80...but I'm sure if he could still preform he would do so occationally.

Sure thing is that we would have gotten a shit load of new music from him over the years though.
