Since just about everyone here is a Black Sabbath fan, we pretty much can conclude that a Black Sabbath album is a lock to win any other Help/Hurt game. So, let's have one for just the Sabbath albums.
Rules are easy for this one. All Sabbath albums are nominated, but in different eras. Only studio albums are up for consideration.
Take away 2 from one and give 1 to another.
Special rules:
1. Albums are divided by eras. You can vote in each era, but the help/hurt must stay in that era. In other words, you cannot hurt a Martin album to help an Ozzy album. Ozzy vs Ozzy, Dio vs Dio, everyone else vs everyone else.
2. If you don't want to vote in an era, don't vote in that era.
3. You can take points from an album and still love it. As Bill Ward sang, "It's all right..." :)
4. Dio era will include "The Devil You Know", even though it was a Heaven and Hell album, but the band is the same as was on 2 other albums, so... yeah...

I propose that once an album hits 0 points, that we leave it on the list, but move it to its overall ranking in that group. So, when TDYK drops out, change it to "4th place". Next Dio-era to drop would be 3rd place, and so on.
That way, we have The Community Official Guide to Black Sabbath Records.

It does create another stake as to getting the "right order", not only the winner. Sounds like fun.

We'll also be able to look back on the voting as a sort of post-mortem... did it drop out rapidly, or were there others that took a similar time to exit? Tells the difference between universally unpopular vs. there being other albums of equal merit.
Did it rise quickly and stay up, or was there a lot of back-and-forth? Tells the difference between universally popular and, again, other albums that are almost as good (or bad, depending...)
Right now, we can see that TDYK is clearly not in the same league as the other Dio-era albums. While we can see where the Ozzy-era works have taken a few hits, with 13 having the most negatives, it's not so bad off as TDYK. That tells us that, relative to other Ozzy-era stuff, it's not too far off the mark.
Over in the "all other eras", we do see a few albums starting to emerge from the pack, but it's still close voting there. While it's still early days, if this keeps up it will indicate that the consensus here is that one is pretty much as good as the other, your mileage may vary.

No, it's not, but it's better than TE... :rofl: :P They're both good albums, though, and given the history of 13 (being the only full Ozzy era album 35 years after the originals, and their last hurrah) it deserves all the recognition it can have. And, yes, we can bicker about this until the cows come home... :)

As for me, I do prefer the original 8 to 13, but I'm not upset about TE or NSD going out first, if that's what happens.
But for sure, SBS > TE, so I'll make sure that fifth album isn't overlooked.
I have to take from Dehumanizer to give to Mob Rules. Ouch it hurts, but it's the right thing to do.

Eventhough I think NSD is a whole lot worse than TE I'll be happy with that one going out first too...but I cannot stand seeing 13 go before NSD though!

Tyr and HC and SS pretty much took heat, but that's not to say it's because there's universal hatred for them and none of the others... look at Forbidden with 18, ahead of BA! I'd say it's more of a matter of the group deciding to take care of first things first and that Forbidden's star is about to fall, with BA, EI, and CP in the top three of the "other eras", and I think that's about right.

Due to the new rules you put in after the game had started, there was some tactics regarding the three bottom Ozzy era ones which probably helped things move along faster. I'm puzzled that one of the three that should share first place at the moment looks like it'll end up at nr. 6, though... :( I'm also surprised that Tyr and HC went out before 7thS and Forbidden.
I haven't heard enough of TDYK to really have a say, but i would've ranked the Dio-albums as is, atleast with MR first and H&H second.

I would have had the order from first to go like this NSD TE 13 but I am okay with that...

NO! :P BS, MoR and Sabt should've had a shared first place. With those three album you get pretty much everything the original band was all about.
Paranoid and SBS a shared fourth and Vol 4 the sixth if not a shared fourth. Just my opinion, ofcourse, but everyone knows that my opinion equals the truth... :)) ;) I could even put NSD! as a shared fourth along with those three, but i'm realistic enough to see that would be a no-go for most others...
I don't like ranking albums, that's why i prefer putting them in bulks instead. Exept those bottom three, they're easier to distinguish.

I've said many a times that back when i still enjoyed those albums, Mob was the best one. Dehumanizer were miles below Mob and H&H, it kinda got lumped in with the Iommi solo albums (you know what i mean...), coloured by what i feel was a lack of inspiration and drive during those years, however well a job Powell did helping in trying to get a legendary name back on track. His role during that era is underestimated. Might've been more consistent if he'd been part of Deh and CP. Damn horses... :P
If i'd still been into that type of Metal by the time TDYK came, it could've ended above Deh. Hard to say, it's all just what-ifs... :)
One reason HC and Tyr went out so quick might be because there's alot of non continental Europeans here. Those albums was more successful here than in the U.S. and U.K. But still... 7th being "better"..? :think:

Of the remaining six Ozzy era albums I don't mind the order in which they finish. To me there's always been very little between them...They're all masterpieces in their own right and whatever album I'm listening to at any given moment it could be my favourite. It's like trying to pick your favourite child...
Am a little surprised with the margin in which MR won though. I'm pretty sure H&H use to always come out on top in polls at the other joint.
I love all the Dio era albums but H&H has always stood apart to me. Love the diversity from track to track and the overall feel of the music having one foot in the 70's & the other foot in the streamlined metal sound of the 80's.
As for the other era's. I cant honestly say I love any of them. I've always dug CP & SS and can listen to them more than any of the others but the fact BA has 3 originals members along with one of the all time great singers of rock means I respect it more than the rest of other era albums combined.

BS is a fun album, but I'll be taking points from it because of the six, I think it's the weakest. I just don't listen to it. Sabotage... that one, I play a lot.
Forbidden takes another whack and I give the point to EI because I love the hell out of that album. Whereas other Martin-era stuff besides CP is pretty rough, EI is a real gem of an album, one that stands on its own feet and takes all comers.

But on Forbidden there are Illusion Of Power, Get A Grip, Can't Get Close Enough, Shaking Off The Chains (one of Tony's best riffs), Guilty As Hell, Forbidden and Kiss Of Death that are great..
So it really comes down to numbers. One Suberb track and 4 great ones vs. 7 great ones.
The potential on ET was always there but the unsteady line-up and the lack of really good writing partner for Tony made it a bit of a mixed bag...less so obviously than Seventh Star but still more so than on the later albums.

Let the chronicles record that the battles became very close between the top 6 Ozzy and the top 4 "all others". No album is an easy out at this point. One could almost conclude to a young person curious about Black Sabbath that some of the best places to start would be Mob Rules for Dio-era, and Paranoid and SBS for the Ozzy era. If you like all those, give BA a whirl and try out CP while you're at it to see if Martin-era stuff could be something you might like.
TDYK, SS, TYR, HC, and TE would be for the fans that have to be completists. Casual fans could stop after a few here and there.
Question is... can we even imagine a casual fan of Black Sabbath? I'm sure such exist, but probably none of them would be voting in this poll...

I know several. Even made a casual fan out of a chick who's way more into early 90's Punk-derived Pop Rock. But i think a more important reason is because we're a relative limited group of members here. Put the same vote on any other Sabbath fan site, and you'll get a totally different result.

I'm picking EI, and this time I'm also voting for the Ray Gillen version, because JtS reminded me about it. Love that album. And I think to say this top three battle doesn't really settle things - there are strong arguments for all three being the best of the "other eras"... just like the other 4 *aren't* the best...
I took from BS and gave to Sabotage. There is a prevailing opinion that of the first 6, BS can be let go. Not everyone agrees, and I think that's worth a thread for discussion once this voting is over.

So, here's the list as it should've been.
OZZY ERA
1. (tied) Black Sabbath, Master Of Reality, Sabotage. Can never seperate these three. They all represent the three great facets of Sabbath, the Blues, the ultra-Heavy and the Progressive
4. Paranoid, Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath . These are not tied, but vary from each time. Paranoid is where they become the real first Sabbath, Vol 4 it's still ultra-Heavy but starting to progress, and SBS is a Progressive masterpiece. What Paranoid and SBS, and some tunes from Vol 4 suffers from is being overplayed (to me), which is why they don't quite stand up to the top three.
7. Never Say Die! Because of my personal relationship with it, it's difference, and all the hate it gets, it sometimes end up at nr. 4 on this list. A great work in all it's confusion, even the commercial Pop Hard Rock of the title track and Hard Road hits the spot.
8. 13 A decent attempt, and enjoyable. They should've put all 16 tracks on it and made it a double album with a different running order, though...
9. Technical Ecstasy. To me the most confused album of the great eight. Half of it is good, and that's not only divided into tunes, but even some of the good tunes have bad parts in them.
DIO ERA
1. Mob Rules. If you're going that way, they did it better here than on H&H.
2. Heaven and Hell
3. Dehumanizer
4. The Devil You Know. I don't really know with the last two. Back when i was into H&H and MR, 'nizer still kinda fell inn with the post BA "less than" albums. If i've known TDYK better i might've put that at 3rd.
ALL OTHER ERAS
1. Born Again. Ehhh... Is there any doubt? The only album in this group that's actually a Black Sabbath album...
2. (tied) Cross Purposes, Headless Cross/Tyr (lumped together).With Powell (and later Murray) on board it started feeling like a band again, after Iommi's two solo efforts. Though one can argue these was still Iommi solo. The HC/Tyr classic Metal sound really hit a spot in Europe, shown in Chargers defence of them here and their ongoing popularity esp. in Germany. CP i think gained alot from the energy boost the Dio reunion had been, and from having Geezer there. Should've had Powell, though, to get that band continuity from the pre Dio reunion.
5. Eternal Idol. More focused songwriting than the first solo album, but still not a band album. I think the reason the Americans like this better than HC and Tyr is because of Gillens involvement in the songwriting.
6. Forbidden. Even with Powell and Murray back on board it was too late to get that band feel established again after 'nizer and CP. It's really apparent by the unfocused songwriting and production that this was about ending the contract before work could start on the Ozzy reunion.
7. Seventh Star. Not Black Sabbath. It's a coked up Iommi/Hughes with messy, sappy songwriting. Next!

Ozzy era:
1. Black Sabbath: American Version. Great flow from song to song, everything taken in the right amount, the album actually seems to breathe.
2. Master of Reality: same good points as debut, just kind of short, and guitar leads are not Iommi's best.
3. Sabotage: Tough to put this at number 3, also has great flow, Ozzy at the top of his game. Some of the songs have a stitched together feel though, and some of the riffs go on too long.
4. Paranoid: The best collection of songs of the whole bunch, somewhat lacking in production and flow from song to song though.
5. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath: great flow, great songs, the album where metal was truly invented. Repetition problems though, and again, the production leaves me cold. Note: for the big 6, these are all nitpicky.
6. Vol. 4: crushing guitar tone, manic feel start to finish, but there's something kind of "brown" about this album. Yes, that's a technical term.
7. Never Say Die!: Side one is quite good, side two saddens me.
8. Technical Ecstasy: nothing as bad as side two of NSD, nothing as good as side one of NSD. I'll take a little bit of excellence over mediocrity please.
9. 13: A couple few great songs.
Dio era:

Overall rankings, Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules leapfrog NSD, Dehumanizer and TDYK fall after 13.

I bet stuff like this happens every time a committee for some magazine has to vote on a top 100 or whatever list. :smug:
One reason I kept the eras separate was because I wanted to be able to allow for a few side shows to what I expected the real battle to be, the first six albums against each other. I also didn't want it to be where the other eras, and even Dio's albums to some extent, would basically be drained for power to fuel up the first six.
What we have is something we could hand over to a new fan, someone looking to get into the band, and say, "Hey, a bunch of fans with brains got together and ranked the albums. Start with the ones at the top and that will guide your journey."
I mean, if you listen to Mob Rules and think, "Nope," then chances are you do not want to waste your time on TDYK. If you listen to Sabotage and you ain't love-love-lovin' it, maybe also try SBS on for size, but you're probably not gonna dig MoR or Vol. 4 if SBS also doesn't click.
The other eras, though, it's a mixed bag, and I think we can agree that Ian Gillan does not equal Tony Martin. BA is worth a listen if you dig the Ozzy stuff, for sure. If you really enjoyed listening to Glenn Hughes do coke screams on DP Mk3 live recordings, you're gonna find something to enjoy in SS. Not love it, but find some good stuff. Some people *do* love it, but that's another story...
Tony Martin's albums are the least like the others. One could even argue that they're not even true Black Sabbath albums... ;)

LOL. Yeah I have to admit I was not that into Sabbath during the Martin/Hughes time. By the time they were around I was living on my own, paying bills and trying to hook up with as many women as I could, so I had little money to spend on CDs. What CDs I was buying were pop/hard/classic type rock. I since have gone back and listened to that era and while it isn't bad, it's just never going to be like the rest.

It is unfortunate you didn't get into the Martin stuff but I do agree it's not quite the same than the Ozzy or Ronnie eras were.
