Title: Technical Issues Thread
Post by: Zzzptm on February 13, 2018, 11:40:47 AM
If any member here has any question about any technical aspect of the forums, this is the place to ask it. Also, if there are any outages, we'll report about them here.

Thank you very much for all of your work. This forum is the best forum ever. I would die for this forum. I'm all tingly just thinking about it all. Or is it shivers? It's difficult to tell.

One thing I do notice is that every now and then a thread you reply to will wind up in "unread threads". This is a bug that happens from time to time. The easiest resolution is to ignore it or to just read the topic like it was unread, then it's marked read and you can get on with your life.

^ I did that, just now. Lesson learned: index.template.php is NOT something you want to mess with. Thankfully, I don't think I'll have to jack with it again, forums look just the way I like them.

I had the same or a similar problem, hopefully the following advice from the FAQ will help you?

"#1:
After posting a comment I return back to the parent forum instead on the topic, what to do?

 Answer:
It does that on default, you have to go to your profile and change the setting like this:
Profile -> Modify profile -> Look & Layout : Return to topics after posting by default :D

EDIT: Ooops, Charger, you were quicker than me. :-D

Be good if it was more phone friendly considering how many people use their phones for web surfing these days. I downloaded the tapatalk app and I hate it.

Also, how to post photos & videos?
Sorry I'm one of those people that never reads instruction manuals. Just dive straight in head first

And...Can we get this gif added? I think it'll be a worthy addition  https://goo.gl/images/fgzUsy

I cannot answer about the phone stuff as I hate using phone for these...you can't see shit from that small screen and writing is like trying to shove telephone poles under your fingernails...

As for attaching pictures, check out the attachment, use the button circled in yellow.

As for videos, use the button circled in red.

Got the GIF, its code is buhbye.

:buhbye:

As for phone-friendly... hmmm... if there's a better moblie forum app than Tapatalk, let's have a look at it. I'm always up for improving the user experience.

You can also get images into a post with the img BBCode. Both youtube and yt work as BBCodes for video. Code would be typed as below:

Code: [Select]
New gif: :buhbye:
Image: [img]URL-of-image[/img]
Youtube vid: [yt]URL-of-video[/yt] or with youtube instead of yt

Looking over apps for reading forums, not seeing any that have both good reviews and low numbers of tech complaints... not easy to see any we would want to test with.

If you want to change your display name, work with an admin or mod on that. It was allowed before, but only because we didn't think to turn it off. Nothing against anyone that changed a display name up to now, but just let us know if you need/want to change it again.

I'm sorry to learn about your issues with the forums Scott (and by the way, welcome!).

A couple of more questions if you don't mind:

1. What operating system are you running?

2. Are you using any plug-ins with Chrome?

Just as another data point, I haven't experienced any issues in that regard, but I'm running Vivaldi.

I'm using Mozilla and occationally there are some slow moments but no total freezes...but I'm inclined to believe it's the mozilla that's acting out more than the forum...this latest Mozilla version is total crap.

Hey Linda,

I looked at your post and modified it. The URL you used was the URL from the browser address bar, which took me to the page where the image is hosted. But it wouldn't show up as an image on this forum because it isn't actually the image's address.

That site puts images in a container of sorts. So, I right clicked on the image itself, chose "Copy image address", and pasted that into your post.

OK, call me stupid, but I'm having trouble posting YouTube videos. I right click on the video and "copy video URL". Back at the forum I hit "reply", click the YouTube play button and then "paste". Before I "post" I notice the YouTube link is the same friggin' cat video I posted a while back. When I post it says it's a bad URL. But if you click on it the cat video plays. What am I doin' wrong? Help me please.

Try just deleting that part? The video worked fine, though.

As you might've seen i've added a new forum for everything related to stuff you've done yourself. I moved Axe's backingtracks there (thanx for posting, btw), and feel free to post your own music, videos, talk about the gear you've got or wish you had, and what Iommi, Blackmore, Satriani and Django Reinhardt is using. And so forth...

There is no pop up report for private messages here. But you will see (1) next to your My messages bar.

Do you mean a place where you can upload your own pics? I use flickr...it's tricky as fuck and very annoying to use but there aren't too many free imagine hosting sites out there anymore that allow forum posting of images.

I had a strange glitch with the forums a few minutes ago - I was trying to respond to Billy in the new albums bought thread when I pressed to respond it nuked my post except for the last word I had typed???

So I forgot my password yesterday and got an email to reset it. When I logged in via the email link I logged in with my username Jack the Stripper and new password. When I tried to log in again a few hours later it wasn't accepting my username so I tried jack the tripper which was my original username and that worked ?

Also, I've noticed if you tilt your phone sideways the forum is much better to view, or views how it should be instead of getting two words per line.

Yes you need to remember that the name you registered with is your username, the name visible is your screenname. The Username cannot be changed afterwards.

It's true, the screen name != user name, so we have to be mindful of both.

As for phone viewing, I use Tapatalk. It does strip out most of the images and smileys, but it also gets me the text I want to see in the threads.

Any suggestions for more Heal/Hurt games when Zeppelin and Metallica is done, to make "official" Community rankings?

The "general albums" can ofcourse keep going endlessly.

Z, i guess you'd like a Purple game, but i don't know how to divide that mess into eras... '68-'69/'70-'73/'74-'75/'84-'93/'96-'17? Lump the Bolin and Turner albums in with the Evans albums as "other eras"? I think there should be a divide between the 70's mk II and 80's/90's mk II atleast.

Other obvious suggestions:
Ozzy solo
Dio solo
Iron Maiden?
Motörhead?

Atleast it should be bands with a sizeable discography. As fun as it would be to do Guns N' Roses and Nirvana, that would be very quick games.

Got an idea for another Sabbath-related list/game too, but that'll have to wait for later... ;)

Judas Priest

Could do Live albums, debut's, sophomore, era's 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, thrash, The Big 4,
LA Metal, Doom, Grunge, NWOBHM

The options are endless Billy

There's three already in play. Shouldn't we wait until one is finished? I'll join in the Zeppelin one when the current game is done, just to speed it up if not for anything else.

Yes...let's not do too many at the same time.

Next one should be Deep Purple as we have a seperate board for them too.

It should go the same way as the Sabbath one did...all in one but for seperate eras.

Evans
Mk2
Others
Morse

I know zzz's gonna object my over generalization of the eras but that makes the game much easier and yet doesn't make the eras too small.

Once we finish Metallica then I'll start this one if no one else does so first.

I was thinking of a DP game, doing all 20 studio albums against each other. That, or doing the 10 from 1968-1976 and then the 10 from 1985-present in different brackets.

Agreed that we ought to space these out. Having one general album one is good, but no more than 2 band-specific duels at a time.

OK, I did a new thing... "Posts" now has a dropdown for all unread and recents... and it means that the logout choice is back on the line with the other choices so it looks nicer.

So, it's a choice between looks nicer or having all unread and recent on the line... I'm personally in favor of looking nicer, that logout below the menu bar had been bugging me, since we added the calendar choice.

EDIT: Clicking on "Posts" will take you to All Unread, so I'm cool with that.

That is the correct response, and it is not case-sensitive. But, it is space sensitive, so if it was copied and pasted and Windows decided to add a space, then it will mess things up. Just type it in and it should work.

If he did type it in, refresh and see if he gets a new set of questions.

So Charger, Billy, Zzz or anyone else that has the know how wanna get a poll(s) started?

When you are on the forum section you want to put the poll on you'll see on the right side above the Subeject/Started by section the bars for "New Topic" AND "New Poll" so instead of clicking the new topic just click new poll and the rest will be easy going.

Most likely, pretty standard on most forum code. It's just not always evident because it only shows up in a view of the threads in a forum, not in a thread itself or a show new messages tab.

I have noticed that when entering an image or youtube video, the focus (blinking curser) is positioned 2 characters to far to the right when ever either of these buttons are used for a comment, unless the comment starts with the use of either button.  This is likely a bug in the software.

The problem could still have been addressed by the original code writers.  All this means is they did not properly test their software on various platforms.  Kind of odd seeing as IE is one of the most common on the planet.

It is automatic and relates to the number of posts you have made, the more posts you make the further up the ladder you get. I'm behind you with the number of posts and have a "VIP Pass" under my name, when I reach the next level it will change to something else.

However, I have no idea why "Dr Feelgood" should be the name of a level, I quite like the band in question but I don't know why they represent that level of posts!

Looks like it changes the view from monthly to weekly. I suppose if we had a highly active monthly calendar, that would help. Don't see it as a useful feature at this juncture, though.

Yeah I think if we'd have an active calendar with lots of entries each day (meetings, greetings, lawn mowings and head bangings) it would make it cleared to read them...

But ofcourse as our calendar only works as a birthday reminder it really serves no purpose but it's the way the thing is built.

You don't really need to push every button on everything though... :D
