This is a pretty standard thread but I know lots of you guys like Doom bands. Post here some of the best ones or new bands you are hearing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtQwM2DNk78
I kind of like Pallbearer but I have to be in the mood to listen to them. Sometimes they can be way too one dimensional and boring for me.
-
Here is some Southern fried doom that I really like!

One more and this one you probably have never heard! Paul Chain is a strange guy but sometimes he can doom!

This is a genre i know i should love more, but have a hard time getting into. It's just too poor mans Sabbath, but without the musical variation that makes Sabbath so great and unique (yeah, i know i'll get flac for that comment, bring it on).
Atleast i can use this thread to try to get more into it.
But there's some classics that i do love, though

But; Type O Negative:
Goth-influenced Doom or Doom-influenced Goth?
-
Cathedral, Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass are my top Doom bands. Love 'em all! But I'm always open for finding some new stuff too!
As for Type O...I don't know...they are pretty doomy but I've always considered them to be more goth. They've got some really killer tunes too though....their last album Dead Again is a masterpiece!

Cool riffing. And is it just me, or is Dorian sounding a bit Hetfieldish at times?

Absolutely. But i'm still very hung up on Bloody Kisses and October Rust, which is without a doubt their most Goth album, but i still consider them basically Doom with Goth keyboards. It's really the Pop melodies that make them hard to put in one or the other.
I would say Candlemass or Paradise Lost are more Goth than Type O, though.
Maybe that's why i got a hard time getting into Doom, i've simply misunderstood the whole thing..? :P

Pretty cool how they've put riffs from different songs together fitting so well. But the Power Metal vocals totally ruin it all, though...

Hey nothing wrong with Power Metal either...they are some killer bands in that genre...it's not like hair metal or black metal or death metal or some shit like that! ;)
And I will give kudos to Billy for using that gif...even if it was for hate purposes...

More stoner than pure Doom , but sounds great.
-
I do like me some doom... but there's a lot of doom that I don't like. Lots of one-dimensional stuff out there that I can play on YouTube and be one-and-done with. Won't ever hear it again, won't ever seek it out some time later. That's the vast majority of a LOT of stuff out there, not just doom, but I'd like to talk about what makes the difference between good doom and meh doom.
First of all - bad doom. If the vocalist gets sludgey on me, chances are I'm going to turn it off before I hear the rest of the song. I can't stand cookie monster screams, unintelligible growling, or malevolent roaring. If the singer can't sing, then please just fire him and be an instrumental combo. I also say "nay nay" to vocals that are way too clean. This is doom, guys, not power metal. Split the difference between opera and cookie monsters and maybe you got something.
If the vocalist does a passable job and everyone plays downtuned fifths, we got something I can play in the background while I do work. What catches my attention and makes me check out the rest of the band's output on Bandcamp are if they can do some change-ups in and around the slow doomy chords. Groove a little, thrash a little, play around with time changes. No math rock, please. Switching between 4/4 and 3/4 is enough for me. Go to 11/4 and you better be Primus, or I'm moving on to the next band.
But if the guitarist can really solo or the vocalist can really hit some pure notes or the bass 'n' drums can really, REALLY groove, then I'm going to keep listening to the rest of the album and probably pick it up for myself.
-
Hot damn Tyr! That Hill Giant sounds pretty good! Vocalist has got a good groove in his voice...some of his delivery reminds me of Ozzy quite a bit.
I'll be checking that one out more!

Some pretty exciting news coming from swedish DOOOOOOOOM legends CANDLEMASS:
THE RETURN TO DOOM!!
EPICUS DOOMICUS METALLICUS SINGER JOHAN LANGQUIST IS BACK IN CANDLEMASS
Shocking news! EPICUS singer Johan Langquist is back after a 32 year hiatus replacing Mats Levén who’s been with the band since 2012. This is right in the middle of recording the new album. What happened?
“We wanted to find our way back to the roots of Candlemass, back to the soul and essence of the band. Johan Langquist is back and we hope this will give us some new energy and kickstart the heart of doom again. We don’t know if it will last 10 more years or even 5, but if it will give us just another year of having fun and playing the music that we love so much, it will be a blast! The circle is closed, Johan is back!"
This is pretty cool especially since Mats LEven was a HORRIBLE fit for the band...
Johan's not the best singer the band has had but this indeed is like a circle closing here...as this most likely will be their final EP that they are doing now...or is it even an album? Psalms Of The Dead was already supposed to be their final album but we all know how those final album this and final album that things go...
-
^^Exciting news indeed and the shot in the arm they've needed since Robert Lowe was abruptly booted from the band... Shame it's taken this long.
-
Incredible, so unexpected ! News of the year .
Even if it would go for one album and a tour. It remains to be hoped that the album will be finalized with Johan and no Mats.
Epicus is their best album too because of Johan's fantastic voice. Too bad he preferred a career in pop.
This is the best solution now , the return of Messiah seems an illusion .. but I still wish it.

This is the best doom album I have heard in the last 2 years. Absolute quality!

Oh my God ! This will be nothing but the Olympus of Doom !
-
Just for a solo but great none the less.
-
The first new Candlemass song with Johan in over 30 years!
The song kind of sounds more like something from the first Avatarium album...but it ain't bad...not at all!
-
Not bad, not bad at all .... but far from what I expected. Ok, I knew that I should not expect a EDM 2 but still. I feel like I hear a demo by Mats Levens or Rob Lowe. This is certainly not the return to the source of the Doom announced by Leif Eidling. The voice of Johan Langquist has massively evolved and is 10000 light years away from the 1986 masterpiece.
I also maintain that Klas Bergwall's solos are a key factor in the success of Epicus, although Lars is an accomplished guitarist.
I 'm waiting to listen to the entire album before making a final opinion.
-
^^ I kinda agree with you there. While the song is not bad but I feel their best work is well and truly behind them now. The idea well has seemingly dried up. I think their last great work will finish with Death Magic Doom. I hope I'm wrong of coarse but everything since has generally been ho-hum and lacking inspiration to me.

Holy shit ! this is great , thanx for sharing
-
OMG , this is just fabulous ! Flawless
with a heavy solo by the Riff Master himself . This solo guitar tone is so close to the Born Again tapes.
-
I was bit weary about posting that considering the lackluster welcome the previous track got from you guys! :D

in fact, it's growing in me each day and listen and today I think it 's pretty awesome !
-
Well that's cool.
I do have to say Octopus is quite a bit better though! And not just because of Tony.
-
The riff Meister!
-
Great track. Tony has phoned that solo in though...

Really? I don't really hear anything phony about it...okay his tone isn't quite "normal" but it's still pretty standard Iommi...

Phone in as being half arsed or not putting in a lot of effort.

Not a big Candlemass fan, but I like this song.

Ah... (too many meanings on one term to keep track!)... Can't agree fully with that either though. Sure it's not among his finest work...in fact his solo for another DOOM icon Cathedral for the song Utopian Blaster is far superior indeed...but I still find this pretty good too...and I find that it actually fits the song pretty well.
-
^^He literally could've come up with hundreds of solo's to fit the song. It's underwhelming to my ears by Iommi's standards. Someone above mentioned it has the Born Again tone, It's more the 13 tone to me. It doesn't sound like he plays the 2nd part of the solo, it has a different tone and feel to it.

Hmmm...sorry you feel that way.
But you're not alone in your thoughts though. I've seen a lot of similar comments...

IMO, the second part of the solo is played by Lars Johansson.
-
Its a song about an octopus! What is not to like? I have been listening to it way to much and I agree it has a 13 vibe. I will buy the album but ive already worn out the main song I wanted to hear.
-
The video for Astorolus is up:
Pretty damn trippy...I'll just leave it at that.
-
Love the song but this is a god-awful vid because :
1- Why so few shots on Mats Björkman? What's the problem ?
2- I deeply hate to see anyone manipulating an animal corpse, as disgusting as it is. I would have preferred to see pictures of old cinema classics à la Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
-
A weird one for sure...
-

Try this one from Athens, Greece. Vocalist has a bit of an accent, but the rock on this album is some great stuff.
-
Well after the first listen I can say the new Candlemass isn't quite as good as I expected it to be honestly. Most certainly not as good as Psalms For The Dead was that's for sure.
But there are some killer tracks like Splendor Demon Majesty, Astorolus and especially Black Trinity which is without a doubt the best track on the album...that is classic Candlemass right there!
An absolute low point however is Under The Ocean which sounds like a left over Avatarium track, no punch no energy and most importantly no doom. Another filler is the short one Bridge Of The Blind.
I will need some more time with this in order to write a proper review but one thing I can say though Johan sounds better than ever. His voice has more depth now that was missing from Epicus.

listen after listen, you'll enjoy it more and more like me, I'm sure.
I understood where this weird feeling came from this new record that could and should have been even better.
According to an interview with Mappe and Johan given to Radio Metal, Marcus Jidell had finished the production. The album was finished with Mats on vocals. A few days later, Mappe recalls Marcus and explains that he must return to the studio because a surprise awaits him. The return of Johan was decided very quickly between Leif, Johan and Mappe. They announced the news to Mats, inevitably very disappointed and embittered. It's so easy to understand him. Johan then put his voice on vocals already recorded, hence the feeling of hearing Johan sung as Mats, which clearly embarrassed me at the beginning.
The Eternal Idol Syndrome.
Talking about Sabbath, not sure either that the band really crossed Iommi in the studio, I think rather to some files were sent by mail, in reality. They certainly sent him Astorolus - The Great Octopus with Mats on vocals.
Regardless, I think today that the album is very good, much better than all productions with Rob Lowe.
-
That's very interesting I didn't know that Mats had actually finished the album... Well I'll take Johan over Mats any given day...that guy just did not have the pipes nor the voice for Candlemass.
From what I gathered from Tony was that he played the solo at his studio and just sent it to Candlemass...he was never involved with the recording process in Sweden.
Candlemass really peaked with Robert though...both musically but most importantly vocally.
Today I've been just listening to Sprits Of Fire...but tomorrow I think I'll get more this one again..
-
^^^ another connection with the Levens era with the fantastic track Bridge of the Blind : a veritable Fortuneteller II from House of Doom EP.
However , Lars plays one of his best guitar solos.
-
Don't know if you guys have the possibility to click on english version somewhere , I know it exists .If not, Google translation is your friend !!
Anyway , here the link to a very long interview with Candlemass .

Very good site. I wrote some articles about Martin Eric Ain , Malcolm Young and Eddie Clarke following their passing.

One thing stands out in this song...the vocals are insanely high in the mix.

Saint Vitus is amazing. This is their original singer Scott Reagers. Reagers Vitus is much darker and doomier. There is also an era with vocalist Wino. Wino is a much more free spirit but still doom/stoner kinda vibe. Music for people who didn't fit in. They were definitely an underground band but they were most popular when punk was everywhere. They were on a punk label but they were the one of the only bands to really slow it down into Sabbathy sludginess with a little tiny mix of 80's punk. Anyways, without the history, I am looking forward to this album because its going to be dark, heavy, evil with plenty of cheese! There should be plenty of downtuned riffs and I love Chandlers Hendrix like crazy guitar solo shredding!
-
I might have to check some more Saint Vitus out...
-
This is a great Vitus album! Otherwise their first two from the mid 80's are really good too!

I am checking out Grief Collector right now. Its actually really good! Great concept too very fitting for a doom band. I may have to add this to my collection on Bandcamp!

10$ shipping to Finland...darn...but gotta get it anyways!

Anyone heard Orange Goblin?
-
Anyone heard Orange Goblin?
Yes. Some of their songs I liked, some were pretty standard, and some, well... I don't play them at all. There's one album of theirs - Back From the Abyss - that, on Amazon, is totally unlistenable to due to file corruption or something like that. It's a damn shame, too, because the opening track is a real rocker.
I bought six of their albums, but I really don't give them a spin that much. Then again, I was looking for more of a stoner sound than a metal sound at the time of my purchase, so your mileage may vary. But they're pretty solidly in the metal part of the spectrum.
I also bought discs from Wo Fat and Mos Generator at the same time and have not regretted or forgotten those purchases one bit.

Probably the best album of 2019 for me so far. Its a very enjoyable album and I am glad to see Reagers back at the helm. I am also a little perplexed that they went with just Saint Vitus as the title. They already did the self titled back in 1984! This new one is definitely Saint Vitus but with a little more experimentation. Check it out for yourself if you like Doom metal with a little punk edge to it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQAzN5DQInY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQAzN5DQInY)

I've been meaning to check that out but haven't yet...It's been getting some mixed reviews...

Good vibes and , yes ,the singer's way of singing reminds Ozzy a lot.

just awesome !
-
Tyr- I love that new Crypt Sermon. My favorite so far is Christ is Dead!
On another note, this band I have heard of before but never sought after their music until recently. I love me some great traditional doom metal! This is one of the best undiscovered bands I have found recently! I need to get this album ASAP but its hard to find and expensive. They have some other Ep's, demos and stuff on bandcamp that I picked up though! They are really talented!

really interesting. Finally something other than the eternal formatted bands of Stoner.
-
My God , Bewitching ! What a voice !
-
... and finally a very good cover of Rainbow In The Dark (Dio) without this horrible keyboards sound which has ruined the song from the start.
-
^ What? No boop boop beep beep boop boop???
  :headbanger:
FINALLY
-
Not a big fan of that cover to be honest...they kind of screwed up the music a bit too much for my liking...
But Conversation With Death sounds great!

Some good vibes of the Peter Steele dead band an we can hear few touches of Alice in Chains here and there .
-
^ Cool track, and yes, there's a good flavour of grunge in there.

So saddened to learn that the legendary doom singer Eric Wagner of Trouble and current band The Skull has passed away :'( Hasn't been officially confirmed by the band as yet but I’m in a Eric Wagner Facebook group and they’re saying his eldest son posted about it and and just now looking through FB there’s quite a lot of pages reporting it.
The Skull tour was cancelled last week as Eric had been admitted to hospital battling Covid and was reportedly on a ventilator.
Man this really sucks.
-
I am not familiar with his work but after a quick search finding him to be 62 is just too young. Sad news indeed.
-
Yep way too young.
Never too late to acquaint yourself with Trouble Charger. We’ve spoken about them a little on here but I really believe that you being a fan of old school doom they’d be right up your alley.
-
Trouble is way cool heavy metal. Sad to see Wagner passing.
-
What a loss for Doom Metal and Heavy Metal in general. R.I.P. Eric!
-
Been on a Wagner kick since Monday night. Doesn't feel real. But Eric left a hell of a legacy between Trouble, Lid, Blackfinger and The Skull.
His solo album should be out at some point from what I've read in recent days, so that's a small consolation.

New CANDLEMASS

More New CANDLEMASS The title track:
What a great riff on this one...but I do have to say Johan's vocals aren't all that good here...

My buddy Andy DiGelsomina just put out a new track called MAHANAIM from his upcoming album Sic Itur Ad Astra.
The album features non other than ROBERT LOWE on vocals!
This is a pretty damn killer track I must say
