New Sabbath 70's Singles Boxset released June 8 through BMG
Despite a run of legendary hit singles in the 1970s, BLACK SABBATH and the seven-inch single format didn't always sit well together. After the release of their debut single, "Evil Woman", in 1970, followed by their ultimate explosive chart success with "Paranoid", the band was not comfortable with the confines of the mainstream pop format and the audience it brought to the group, leading to their now-legendary self-imposed ban on releasing singles in the early '70s.
"We didn't intend to make a single in the first place," said Tony Iommi to the Disc And Music Echo in 1971. "But after we'd completed the album, the 'Paranoid' track was sufficiently short to be a 'trailer' for the LP. We really didn't expect it to do anything at all. We don't go into the studio to make singles. We make LPs only. But if there is anything suitable as a result of the recordings, it would be considered, of course."
BLACK SABBATH's music was vast, expansive and heavy; not the kind of vision that can be easily shackled to the three-minute pop format. Record Mirror ran a story in November of 1970 stating that "SABBATH have decided to place a 'ban' on singles in the future. Their hit, 'Paranoid', as far as they are concerned is their first and last single. They will also oppose any attempt to draw singles material from future albums."
BLACK SABBATH's 'ban' on singles in their own country lasted for more than two years, and good to their word, no singles were issued from 1971's "Master Of Reality", but in 1972, as a harbinger from fourth LP, "Vol 4", "Tomorrow's Dream" was issued as a 45 and from then on a steady run of singles followed that showed that, despite SABBATH's initial dislike, many of their songs did lend themselves well to the format.
"Supersonic Years - The Seventies Singles Box Set", released June 8 through BMG, documents the band's run of hit singles as never before and features an array of unique content.
* This limited-edition box set includes five rare single edits: Iron Man / Sabbath Bloody Sabbath / Am I Going Insane (Radio) / Hard Road / Symptom Of The Universe.
* 10 unique color picture sleeves from around the world, either ultra-rare or exclusive to this box set.
* Remastered by renowned engineer Andy Pearce.
* New liner notes booklet detailing the rarities contained within the box set, along with the story behind the birth and evolution of the most culturally important genre of all time.
The box set features the following singles:
Disc 1: Evil Woman (Don't Play Your Games With Me) / Wicked World - 1970
Disc 2: Paranoid / The Wizard - 1970
Disc 3: Iron Man (Single Edit) / Electric Funeral - 1970
Disc 4: Tomorrow's Dream / Laguna Sunrise - 1972

Wow... that's something I've rarely seen... Black Sabbath 45s...
-
Pretty interesting...I've got the old cd single boxset that was released in the early 2000s...but I think that wasn't released on vinyl at all so I can understand why do this...
Also the price isn't totally insane...I was expecting 100€+ but at 59£ (70€) not horrible...too rich for my blood but not horrible.

These are cool and all but let's be honest - how many times are they going to pilfer the Ozzy Osbourne years of Sabbath and keep releasing basically the same thing in twenty different iterations. Now I love the Ozzy years myself but really - how many copies or versions of these songs do we need. I wish that they would release more of their concerts as there are several good to great soundboard bootlegs out there in the wild, surely BS has access to some great concerts.

Well, with people like DROID (and others ofcourse), there's a market for it, and ofcourse they want to reap the benefit. But, yeah, it would be much better to release something previously unreleased. Might be a good market for that too, but rights might not be for Sabbaths sole benefit. It could even cost them more to pay for the rights than they possibly would've gained from it...
The single missing from MOR: Sweet Leaf/After Forever

I wish that they would do a proper Remaster on Asbury Park 75 and release it officially. Or some other concerts or if there is any other unreleased songs that could possibly see the light of day.
And you are right - Droid would be a candidate for this kind of release.

I guess there's already some competition or something going on at the other place where Dr. Evil is going to throw the box around to buy more allies... :)
Ashbury would be great, so would the Paris/Belgium show. Then there's ofcourse the holy grail of the Earth-tunes.
And i still believe there's ALOT of stuff that could've made it on a disc 2 on deluxe editions of Vol 4 to NSD!, like the first three.

Why would She's Gone be on 2 of the discs? Is that correct? :glitch:
-
Yeah I'll believe Droids collection when I see it >:D
As much as I'd more prefer previously unreleased official stuff I'm more than good with this. Never really been a collector 45's or 7" barring a few here & there but to have this 70's single collection in one nicely packaged box at an affordable price is something I'm interested in purchasing to add to my collection.

Because it's short enough for a 45 and is a b-side, anyway.

It is correct. She's Gone was the b-side for both Gypsy and Never Say Die...which is indeed odd to say the least.

Have a stab at who's wandering why the singles from Master Of Reality weren't included

Just a shot in the dark, but could it be a self proclaimed "expert" or one of his disciples? :P

It's amazing he's not wondering why A Song For Jim isn't included... :P

I agree with releasing 2 CD DE's, well, for Vol.4, SBS and Sabotage. Also, I'm still hoping a remix of Born Again for another DE for that album will someday happen.

Well that's crazy. How can a song be a b-side of another from a different album?

I think I've seen it before with other bands, particularly those that, like Sabbath, didn't like releasing singles. I'd have to dig around to find the concrete examples, though.

Yeah I think was a regular occurrence in the 70's. Later on bands would put a live version of a song from a previous album most of the time.

The singles Metallica put out in the 90's was pretty cash cow. 4-5 different versions of the same single, just with different b-sides, mostly live songs (being CD-singles there was ofcourse several on each). And some early attempts at having CD-ROM content, i seem to remember. And with about the same ammount of singles pr. album, it quickly added up.
And why did they do it? Because they knew people would buy them anyway, to have a "full" collection...
