Inspired by finding out Rudy Sarzo was in The Guess Who... this thread is for those bands that just. won't. die. :death:
Some may still sound good, some may need to hang it up... all of them are NOT playing the arenas they once performed before...
Here's Grand Funk doing a cruise tour...

Ahhh, you beat me to it! I was gonna call it "Bogus versions of your beloved bands" or something or other.
Most of these bogus versions are at least sanctioned by someone from the original group. What gets me about bogus Deep Purple, is that they thought they could get away with something like that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KXf9IEFuy0
...and to make it worse, the band was so shitty!!
-
I guess when bands turn into these mega corporations, a knife in the back is just collateral damage:

That band was the same one that ripped off Steppenwolf a year before. They were planning to rip off Deep Purple in order to get enough money to pay off the Steppenwolf legal bills. Poor Rod Evans had no clue...
-
Meanwhile, back at the Savannah Flower Fest main stage... The Turtles!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5Jb6fgnVVc
They still got their vocalists, that's all that really matters for their songs...
-

Poor old Rod must have really been strapped for cash to take part in that clusterfuck, No one's heard from him since!
I think bogus Steppenwolf at least started out with a few of the classic members (Goldy McJohn, Nick St. Nicholas and Kent Henry), and was basically licensed out by John Kay and Jerry Edmonton until they breached the contract somehow down the line.
A version with Frankie Banali on drums:
They actually had Steve Riley (W.A.S.P. and L.A. Guns) on drums for awhile too.
-
Here's Gary Rossington's Lynyrd Skynyrd...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0Uliu7CRnI
-
^^^ If they were to carry on without Gary, how ridiculous would that be?
Here's another example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuLDoajJ6ww
Awesome band, with an awesome cast of replacements, but is it really Moxy without Buzz?
-
Rainbow's been down to one remaining member of the original lineup since 1980...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O87q6jFcmmc
-
^^^ Deep Purple too when you think about it in the original sense.
Also this band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-ce2YHhN3g
Maybe an added insult when they re-record their hits with the new guys?
-
He siiiings like the first guy...
But the sound... something's missing overall, even though it's the same notes and everything. They're a cover band for their own tunes.
Kind of like Journey...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTfJI_vw4No
-
....and Quiet Riot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3v_My_3lfg
-
^ That's right! Quiet Riot is a much, much different band than it used to be.
So is White Lion. Looks like just about any band that's running out of former members also has a part in their Wiki article about a legal dispute over who owns the rights to the band's name.
-
Looks like just about any band that's running out of former members also has a part in their Wiki article about a legal dispute over who owns the rights to the band's name.
Which brings us to Ratt:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrAbG7ju41M
A band that was down to it's drummer, until the other 3 surviving members wrestled the name from him legally.
-
I looked up Dokken, figuring they'd have no legal mess since Don Dokken kinda owns his own name... and then I found out that they actually called in their lawyer to play guitar. So even Dokken had to get lawyers involved because of lineup changes.
:yeahright:
-
^^^ I can't imagine the amount of disfunction that band has been through if even half the stuff I read is true.
Another band down to one member:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxvU7o_PSWk
-
^^^ Random song? :)
-
^^^ Random song? :)
Thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.
-
Can you spot the original band member in this video!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBv0L4fh_v8
-
Bonus... Go to 2:35 for when the original member has a turn on vocals...
https://youtu.be/ujHImvt6qo4
:zomgwtfbbq:
That was really hard to watch... the old guy sounded like he was about to drown and the lead singer looks like The Joker in different makeup...
:ivan:
-
^^^ Oh my god! Not so sweet anymore, poor bugger!
That reminded me of this video (Vocals start at 1:25):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEJp2BsaeiE
Well, at least they gave her a good ol' go before going back to work on Monday (If they're not retired!).
-
Wow... I've heard Dad Bands doing better than that... Of course, these guys are in the Grandad Band category... but my grandad sounded way better in his band, I've also heard grandads sounding better...
Who else can we dig up at the Savannah Flower Fest...?
Sounds like Wang Chung is holding up pretty well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQIjk57tiTM
-
Dokken, not only disfunctional but confusing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp6-iq_7dhI
-
Ditto with Ratt:

I think one of the comments summed it up the best... "Not one original member in this band. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. One last thing...... I don't know how much this singer is paid, but if it's a buck it's to much. Absolutely terrible."
I agree, absolutely terrible...

I *had* a response, but the moment has passed. And if you look at the lineup on the first Mk1 album, I believe you see Mr. Paice in the credits. Sort of the same way that Ringo Starr is an "original" member of The Beatles. Lineups before that first recording don't really count.

Hmmmm, Do demos count?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3If5AWP5eL4
Then you got Judas Priest, Who's "original" singer, Al Akins, not only did demos, but his material made it to the first and second albums (Dave Mustaine and Metallica comes to mind as well), thus getting "credit"?
Even the credit thing is a little sticky, because drummers and bass players, unless they wrote the lyrics or melody (riffs), aren't usually credited anyway, unless you do a split like Sabbath.
I know that it's probably just me being nittpicky, but it is kind of an interesting grey area.
It's funny to think of AC/DC, as they didn't have a stable line-up until the second album, so they haven't been the original band since 1975 or so. But I guess in the end, we all know AC/DC was the brain-child of Angus and Malcolm, and the rest for all intents and purposes, were really sidemen.
I never even heard of Carlo Little until I read Billy's post.
-
Well, i do consider Pete Best Beatles' original drummer as well as Stu Sutcliffe being their original bassist, they're both on the My Bonnie-album with Tony Sheridan, and it wasn't the bands fault Polydor decided to call them "The Beat Brothers".
And Dave Evans was the original AC/DC vocalist, he did their first single Can I Sit Next to You, Girl.
And there wouldn't be any Metallica without Mustaine, not only due to his song writing on Kill 'Em All, but it's also bleeding over to Ride The Lightning. You can't always just count band members by having played on albums or not.
AC/DC really belong in this thread too considering the state of the band at the moment. Stevie Youngs connection nonetheless, Angus is the only original or classic member left. The only way to get a "true" AC/DC again is to bring back Brian Johnson, and i actually think Axl've been doing a decent job for them. It's still Angus' solo project, though, just like Chinese Democracy-era G 'n' R was Axl's solo band.
That being said; i only brought DP up just to mess with you, Dozy

Oooohhhh, now you're playing with fire... :squint:

Well, guess i've brought it on myself... :)

^^^ Atleast you didn't call me a Swede. That would've earned a ban... :)

Not horrible, but the lyrics guaranteed to drive you up the wall... and the playing isn't amazing... I made it to a minute-and-a-half before I was done with it.
Bachman and Turner sound about the same as they did back in the day... but the other half of BTO has sued them about their ability to use "Bachman" or "Turner" in their band name.

That's absolutely asinine! Fred Turner and Randy Bachman were/are BTO and the only good thing about the band! That's be like Stevie Young suing Angus and Malcolm over AC/DC or something. Wow, this is definitely Topsy Turvy land!
-
Herman's Hermits Featuring Peter Noone... Noone left in 1971 and 1973 and yet tours under that band name. The drummer was the only band member to stay in the band all the way through their different versions, but he now has to tour as "Herman's Hermits starring Barry Whitwam" because of legal disputes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QzvKdIDQ0g
Peter doesn't sound half bad, though.
-
Here's a band, that was never really a band in the first place:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgN4fZ5PMAc
Still, It'd be nice to see Barry Goudreau back up there shredding away.
-
They do look better without all the makeup they had on in the 70s...
Hey, April Wine is still out there! Who knew, huh?
She's a rooooollerrr...
