Title: Steely Dan
Post by: Zzzptm on March 05, 2018, 01:39:40 PM
So I was cruising around the YouTube and came across this video from "The Midnight Special". It's got just about everything...

An intro by Bill Cosby, even.
 :dealwithit:

There's also the guy they hired to be the lead singer doing backing vocals and Donald Fagen giving his all to prove he's the Larry David of music.

Another Dan performance on The Midnight Special...

They got the "real singer" doing the vocals... but... well... I can see why they kinda edged him out... his style just isn't right for the grittiness of the lyrics. Fagen's vocals give it that NYC back alley edge, but this guy is just another decent singer... he had to go.

I was already into Steely Dan when their Two Against Nature album released. Not sure if it was a good thing or a train wreck, I held off on buying it. And then PBS ran this as a special and I was hooked on the new numbers introduced here, especially "What a Shame About Me" and "Cousin Dupree." The cutaway interviews are also a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy!

There's also Donald Fagen's solo work, of which The Nightfly and Kamakiriad are both great albums. I'm reserving judgment on Morph the Cat and Sunken Condos, though, as they sound over-produced to me...
