Title: What Music Did You Take In Today?
Post by: Jack the Stripper on February 23, 2018, 03:52:19 AM
As apposed to what are you listening to now? What was your music of choice today? Whether it was listening to an album or song(s) or maybe you watched something music related.

Today while working I continued with my annual Candlemass kick listening to Chapter VI then followed up by Candlmass(2005)

Then had my iTunes on shuffle for the rest of the time and the following songs played...

Paris Is Burning - Dokken
Jewel Throne - Celtic Frost
Scrum - Slayer
The Accusation Chair - King Diamond
The House That Jack Built - Metallica
The Miracle - Suicidal Tendencies
Psycho - System Of A Down
Stone Cold Killers - W.A.S.P.
Fighting For Your Love - Savatage
No Remorse - Motörhead
Bark At The Moon - Ozzy
Evil Woman - Black Sabbath
Been Caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction

For the next few days at least my music intake will consist purely of the brilliant new BLAZE BAYLEY album The Redemption of William Black. No need for anything else.  :abbath:

Good differentiation. There's what I play when I'm at work as ambient stuff to tap my fingers to as I wait for stuff to load. Then there's the stuff we like to savor, free of other distractions.

For me, I actually started today with "The Price of Silence" done by an ensemble of musicians to support Amnesty International. It's always an emotional experience for me, as each of the performers is not only active in human rights movements, but many were also victims of oppressive regimes. I'll post it in the World Beat thread later today when I savor it again.

Isley Brothers as I got ready for work today. "Livin the Life/Go for Your Guns" and the ultra-funky "Live It Up."

Each morning I eat breakfast at my desk while looking over some work related material and have a classical music cd playing in the background.  This morning was Antonio Vivaldi, some violin concertos.

Bobby Short. Excellent lounge singer, he totally owned the NYC scene with his golden pipes.

Today I listened to South Of Heaven(album) in full twice. Best guitar and drum sound of any Slayer album.

Then for some reason I felt the want to listen to Steel Panthers debut album Feel The Steel, followed by their sophomore release Balls Out.  :guitar:

Thinking about what I want to listen to later on tonight... might be some 70s NYC punk-ish rock, like the Dolls, Ramones and/or Dictators. Maybe also BOC...

Went with "Slow Death" by The Dictators. It's always a good song for keeping sobriety, since I think, "Damn, I don't want to get that bad..."

Listening to Humble Pie's Smokin'. Part of my plan in the H&H album edition was to get more suggestions for stuff to take in, particularly classic albums I may have missed because there wasn't enough time in my youth to listen to everything. I plan to listen well to each album before I start voting on what wins and what loses.

I very much enjoyed their first two albums then they went downhill fast...tried to be all trendy and hip and artsy fartsy...Some good tracks were still found on Steal This Album but I found nothing to enjoy about the stuff that came after.

I love it all but I can see where you are coming from. That being said - it is almost impossible to top Toxicity IMHO, so their inability to do so may very well be what they did that let you down on the later releases.

Quite possibly yes since Toxicity is a masterpiece indeed. But they changed bit too much too after that...

I didn't want to hear about this band 'til I heard the Roky Erickson's cover  "If You Have Ghost".
It was the big click for me.

So Jack , what do you think about this band ?

It was the big click for me.

So Jack , what do you think about this band ?
I really liked the catchy melodic retro doom vibe of their first album Opus when it came out. Thought it was quite a unique and breath of fresh air at the time despite the influences you could hear in their sound. I saw them live on that first album tour as well and thought they were pretty great.

Then came the follow up album Infestissumam which I found to be on the disappointing side in that most of everything I enjoyed about the debut album was kinda missing in favour of more a popier radio friendly sound.

Meliora was a slow burn for me, initially I didn't like it much either barring a couple songs but it has really grown on me to the point that I think I like it even more than Opus.
Subsequently, I've since rediscovered Infestissumam and like it so much more than I originally did...Year Zero might even be my favourite song of theirs.

I'm not that much into the whole storyline that goes along with Papa and the nameless ghouls but I do appreciate them for their unique and continually evolving style of music. A lot of their songs are as catchy as hell with some really cool & memorable riffs. Great melodies too.

TF is definitely a talent.

So you could say I'm a fan, but not a devotee. Am very much looking forward to Prequelle though.

Very much agreed. And for those that know Pagan Altar, May 15th has become a day of remembrance, ever since Terry Jones (vocals) passed away on that date in 2015.

So the past couple of days have seen (well, heard) all things Dio-related and Pagan Altar get an airing.

Today I had a Maiden day. First off I listened to Fear of the Dark, then followed it up with Somewhere In Time. After that I listened to or should I say struggled through(yet again) The X Factor...An album thats just never gonna click with me no matter how many times I try. Outside of Man on the Edge the album is just so lifeless and repetitive with a singer that lacks variety and passion. Actually the final song The Unbeliever is a song I quite enjoy. It's an unusual song with a cool intro and Blaze actually sings with a bit more some passion on that one, also has a ripping guitar solo.

Been listening to this the last two days and gotta say this remix/remaster is stunning. The sound is so much clearer with good seperation between the instruments and the guitars sound absolutely deadly. You can hear much more detail in the riffs that you couldn't hear in the original muddy mix which gives the whole thing a new lease of life.

The only negatives are that the rerecorded vocals on These Boots sound out of place in comparison to the rest of the original vocal tracks but Dave still sounds surprisingly very good on it. Also, Gar Samuelson is an absolute beast of a drummer on this album and I would've liked a little more punch to the drums on this remix.

Highly recommend picking this up though if you're a fan of this album.

Can only be our band. They were big fans. They also use the same line again later in the song but mention Slayer.

I just picked up that Queensryche album but have yet to listen to it. I actually have bought the first four studio albums by Queensryche as they were going for cheap at a new record store I have been frequenting.
I hear good things about those albums pretty much wherever I go.

Yeah the first 4 are the best, I use to really like Rage For Order back in the day but gave it a listen the other day first time in a long time and it sounded quite dated and Tate's voice gave me the shits. Mindcrime is their best album.

Was invited to make a playlist for my boxing session this evening after I whinged about the shitty music the week before. Had to be upbeat and motivating but not overly heavy or obscure, so went with a safe classic option.

Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC
Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crüe
Chinatown - Thin Lizzy
Bed Of Nails - Alice Cooper
Ace Of Spades - Motörhead
Panama - Van Halen
You've Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest
Crazy Train - Ozzy
Back In The Saddle - Aerosmith
We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
Fuel - Metallica
Rock Rock (Till You Drop) - Def Leppard

^^I actually don't mind Neil Turbin's vocals on it. They have unpredictibilty about them and he sound's like a cross between Paul Stanley and Dan Beehler from Exciter.
Fistful of Metal doesn't get the credit it deserves compared to the other three of the big four debut albums, even though it's the thrasher and heavier one out of all of them.

SOE is probably my least favourite of the Joey albums or at the least line ball with the last two. Not a bad album by any stretch just no where near as good as the two albums it's sandwiched between.

I am looking forward to the anniversary edition as well, should be chock full of goodies. And it desperately needs a remaster as it has some glaring mastering faults. I love it though and I remember playing this on my dads stereo as loud it would go.

I find that I get tired of hearing Among The Living, but that has more to do with the fact that it was an instant fav when I was young and I over listened to it.

I got very late into Anthrax just a year or so before they released Worship Music and this was my first album so for that reason alone it has a very special place in my heart but also I remember really enjoying it from the start and that hasn't changed a bit over the years!

Gave this a listen today...First time in quite awhile.
Not often you get an album where your favourite song song on it is a cover but I've always really loved their cover of Antisocial. The bookends Be All, End All and Fīnalē are really good solid songs and I quite like Who Cares Wins but the rest of the album falls into mundane territory for mine. Also not a fan of the way Joey's vocals are recordered on this one.

^^^ Very difficult question... Right now i think i'll have to go for Wings. Ask me another day it might be Sin. A third day it could be Stained.
Wings is the one with the strongest 70's Hard Rock/"not quite Metal yet" feel that i love, though, so i think i would answer that most days...

How about you?

I'm with you in that they are hard to seperate but I would put Sin After Sin a clear third though, but the other two could change on any given day.

I love the mournful depressing mood of Sad Wings and the airey 70's production, Glenn and K.K. pretty much invented that twin guitar attack duelling solo's style on that album. Stained Class is little more metalized for lack of a better word and a precursor to what they ultimately become in the 80's but still very much has a foot in that 70's sound and style.

Both are landmark albums.

Both are landmark albums.

All three. They very much belong together, and show the development of Priest, and hence Metal, in a very good way. They would've been curriculumin in a Heavy Metal study.

Honestly I've never liked Stained Class...part from Exciter and Beyond The Realms Of Death this album isn't really doing it for me.

All three have some real stinkers on them but all of them have some absolute monsters as well...all are classic for sure but hardly best the Priest has to offer.

Nah...I've listened to it enough honestly.

I've never had a huge ammount of love for any of the 70s albums...like I said all of them have fantastic songs on them but also some that are not. Before Defenders I don't think they made a 100% perfect album.

Listened to these back to back. Perfect Strangers is such a great Deep Purple album. I saw then on that tour so listening to it always evokes great memories of that time.
The first side of The House Of Blue Light is a little pedestrian and uninspiring but I've always quite enjoyed side 2.

^ Yes, I agree on HoBL. In an interview, Gillan said that side 1 was Blackmore's side and side 2 was his side, in terms of how the writing went. Lots of tension on that album, you can really hear it in "Spanish Archer".

^^Thats interesting because his playing is so much better on side 2. Actually the whole bands brings it on side 2.

I listened to Slaves and Masters today. Another DP/JLT era Rainbow album I have a bit of time for. Albiet, it's mainly Ritchie's playing that lifts the album. Half the songs are good to great but a full listen is just AOR overload and becomes tiresome.

Thats probably 100% right, although by the end of 1990, hair bands were just about dead & buried or given their last rites.

True, I was thinking that was also right about when NKOTB and their ilk were making Boy Bands the Next Big Thing.

Maybe they needed to replace Joe Lynn Turner with Bell Biv Devoe?

Listened to these back to back today. The first one Live In Studio A is the Skunkworks lineup and comprises songs from his first two solo album Tattooed Millionaire & Balls To Picasso. Disc one is recorded live in the studio and Disc two is live at the Marquee club in England, both recorded in 94.

The second album Scream for me Brazil is a two disc set released in 1999, recordered Live in Brazil in with the Accident of Birth/The Chemical Wedding lineup and is mostly made up songs from both those albums.

Both are very good live albums, albeit The live in the studio one seems a bit pointless.

Onslaught - VI(2013)

Gave this a listen for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Was a fan of this English thrash band back in the 80's but haven't really followed them since the In Search Of Sanity album(1988). VI features Sy Keeler on vocals who sung on the classic The Force album as well as long time guitarist Nige Rockett.

Very tight sounding thrash album with some great hooks and thrash grooves and killer production. One of the better albums from the thrash revival of recent years.

I've got the same thing (part from the fact that I've never even heard of Mudwayne... ;D )...

I really enjoyed the first Hellyeah album it had a good honest rock 'n roll attitude...but I remember hearing the first single from the second album and it didn't resonate at all in the same way plus it felt like the singer had actually gotten worse. So I never really got into the band anymore after that. I think I should probably give the guys another chance.

^^Its not the most original sounding album but it's more consistent and much catchier and groovier than their previous ones. I also prefer Chad Gray's vocals on it over their other albums.  Less of that southern twang and more of the Anselmo esque screaming from Vulgar/Far Beyond

Great album.

Apparently this album had a few riffs & ideas lifted from riff tape that was discovered in a box discovered by Criss Oliva's widow, and you can tell. It's probably the most original era Savatage sounding album post Criss's death.

That is a fantastic album indeed!

And yeah Jon found some tapes of Criss' riffs back then...he also used them for Global Warning and The Festival and the last few ones were used on Jon's solo album Raise The Curtain.

JOP was a fantastic band. It was a real shame that Matt died, he was not only a fantastic guitar player but such a close friend to Jon as well...I guess he never really recovered from that enough to put the band together again.

Yeah Matt LaPorte was an incredible guitar player. Being from Tampa I'm sure he was influenced/inspired by Criss too.

Jon has been through so much shit in his life its amazing he still has the will. Brilliant singer/musician

Yeah always loved that Jerry & Matt version of Ghost In The Ruins....they really rip through that one! Absolutely stellar playing.

Jon has been through so much...and ofcourse loss of Paul O'Neill was a huge hit again as well considering just how close they were and how much Paul helped Jon (and vice versa) after Criss died.

I haven't heard anything from Jon in a long time... Chris Caffery did tell me a while ago that Jon is infact working on some new music on what might be a new JOP record...but who knows.

Today I have only been taking in EXODUS for the first time in my life.

Bonded By Blood which is pretty good and Fabulous Disaster which I am now finding rather excellent even!

It is strange how certain bands just kind of slip through the cracks... Although it is totally possible that the few songs I've heard from them in the past haven't been among their best or I just have't really listened to them...

I will leaven the whole Dukes era alone though as he didn't work...at all...But Souza's Udo like voice is working for me now. And the music is really good...it's kind of like between Anthrax and Slayer in terms of aggressiveness. Which I think is a pretty nice balance.

I like finding new bands to enjoy.

Glad you're digging Exodus Charger. They really should've had've had a bigger career. At least to the level of Anthrax but the delay in releasing their debut due to record company issues meant they kinda missed the boat as thrash stared to take off. Bonded by Blood should've come out 12 months earlier in 84, then when it did come out they changed vocalist and took a another 2 years to release their follow up further halting their momentum. Thrash and the big 4 had well and truly taken off by that stage. Kirk Hammet actually formed Exodus with Baloff in 82 and played on their original demo's before being poached by Metallica after Dave was given the boot.

Once you've explored and immersed yourself in the Exodus catalogue I suggest you next check out Overkill. Another original pioneering thrash band that should've had a much bigger career than they've had.
Title: Re: What Music Did You Take In Today?
Post by: Charger on November 19, 2019, 03:52:43 PM
Yeah I studied their history a bit too...they had a hard beginning compared to the big 4 for sure and they indeed seemed to have missed the boat a bit.

I also did see that about Kirk Hammet being in the band. Also something I did not know before.

Things were moving very fast in the heavy metal world in the early 80s and certain bands most certanly didn't make it to that train. Talent wise from what I heard in these two albums there isn't much missing. I do think that they aren't quite as catchy as Anthrax and Metallica were or as brutal as Slayer... Both singers vocal delivery isn't really standard either. It's not as fast as Tom's but also not as melodic as Joey's...maybe bit harder to sink in perhaps. I don't know.

I also read somewhere that Dave Mustaine always thought of it as Big 5 instead of 4 and wanted to include Exodus too but that it would have been too many bands already...

We have talked about Overkill before and funny enough Jack I was just thinking the same thing that now I will have to check them out too as I have meant to for a long time.

Title: Re: What Music Did You Take In Today?

Overkill is the most underrated Thrash Metal band of all time. That being said most hardcore Metal fans know about them and they often give them the respect they deserve. I would start with the album Horrorscope and then maybe try either The Years Of Decay or the newer album Ironbound that reignited their popularity. Overkill is some seriously bad ass Thrash Metal!!
Title: Re: What Music Did You Take In Today?
Post by: Jack the Stripper on November 24, 2019, 06:15:39 AM
^^I concur and agree wholeheartedly with those three choices although I'd probably start with The Years of Decay seeing it came before Horrorscope. I consider The Years of Decay the best or peak of their 80's output with Horrorscope being the best of the 90's. Ironbound is just an incredible thrash album and not only my favourite of their 2000's releases but right up there as my favourite thrash album of the last 25 years.

I really think you'll enjoy Overkill Charger. They originated from New Jersey so they have that East Coast thrash sound similar to Anthrax. Fun lyrics( more on their earlier releases) a somewhat cleaner singer, a rumbling prominent bass underneath and gang vocals.
