Title: Board Games
Post by: Zzzptm on February 12, 2018, 03:29:55 PM
Ticket to Ride got me hooked into Euro-style board games. Excellent components, mechanics that keep everyone guessing to the end, lots of skill involved. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still start with that one, as it's been a solid title, year in year out, with lots of replay value.

I like board games, my favorite use to be Life, loved that as a kid, today no one likes them except for the older generation, monopoly was another favorite and of course checkers.

Give a game like Ticket to Ride or Alhambra a try. Both those are available as mobile apps and are great fun.

Picked up Gloomhaven last week. I finally have all of the pieces popped out and organized, and have a handle on the rules.

My wife and I are going to set it up on the dinning room table and see how it goes :)

Looked it up... that's a YUUUUUGE game! Found one review where a guy was basically whining about not getting it, then looked at a guy that gave five tips on how to play. The tipster said some things that, looking at the components and from my admittedly limited understanding of the game, seemed like good ideas.

The tips were:

1. Organize your game
2. Use the Gloomhaven Helper app
3. SPOILER - see the video for this tip, but it's a very minor spoiler and I think it's worth knowing, going into the game.
4. Be consistently good or evil or any other trait.
5. Read the FAQ
6. bonus tip - make your own doors and put 'em on stands so you can see 'em better.

Play it at a faster speed because he talk slow.

Thanks for the find!

Yeah, it is literally 20.1 pounds of game lol. The last time I played anything remotely similar to Gloomhaven was from an Ares subscription I had decades ago. And by "remotely similar" I mean "remotely similar like a piece of gravel is similar to a butterfly."

Should be a good time, looking forward to jumping in!

Aw, dude, I remember Ares... SPI's venture into Sci-Fi... My favorite game from that mag was Star Trader. Second favorite was Albion because of all the colors on the pieces. :)

I subscribed to S&T from 1976 up to about just after TSR bought out SPI and changed the physical quality of the components to where the counters would always rip. I loved my first issue, Panzergruppe Guderian. In the 1990s, I subscribed and submitted games to Command magazine. By the late 90s, we had not enough room and too many cats for me to be able to set up a game and to leave it out.

The two games I designed that got published were Cortes and When Tigers Fight. When I met Richard Berg at Origins, I was so happy that he enjoyed playing Cortes, as I'd enjoyed so many of his games. :smug:
