Title: Do You Still Buy Physical Media - CD/Vinyl/DVD/BluRay???? -
Post by: Thelemech on February 20, 2018, 08:37:18 PM
I have about 2500 CDs at this point - my apartment is full of great albums - mostly CD as that is my preferred format.
I do use Itunes and have bought albums that were just too expensive to justify purchasing as physical media formats.
I also use Youtube at times to listen to albums that I am considering picking up on CD.

I stopped getting physical media some years ago. Gave up on DVDs first, never bought BluRay, finally stopped getting CDs about 4 years ago. I didn't want to get to where I ran out of room in my house for stuff I basically store in digital form.

I do have a stack of CDs, The most important Sabbath ones and some other stuff thats rare or near & dear to me. If i'm buying "new" stuff it's on vinyl. Still buy DVDs or BluRays now and then if there's something special. Rarely listen to music at all for a while, but when i do it's mainly on Youtube or mp3 player... A bit of everything...

I don't do anything BUT physical media! All that digital shit has absolutely no interest in me unless there is no other way to get something or if it comes with the physical media.

The sound quality of MP3's put aside I want to touch and feel what I own. Having some files on a computer does nothing to me...it's faceless.

I also buy vinyl but for collection purposes only as I have no means of playing them.

I still want the physical copies with the pictures and notes etc. I buy on Amazon so I usually get the AutoRip and if I don't I can Rip them manually. At the moment I tend to listen to music on an MP3 Walkman but I still buy the CDs.

I'm with Charger and KDC on this.
Any music I like enough to listen to now and again, I buy the CD. I have a small movie collection on DVD/Blue Ray. For convenience, I rip all CDs into the computer for in house listening.  The CDs are used in my car for on the road playing. Mp3's are digitally compressed and I don't want any bit of data lose to affect my music.

Vinyl. I've bought maybe five CDs in my life, don't much care for video stuff. If a song pops into my head that I'd like to hear at any given time, I'll pull YouTube. If I want to have a musical experience I'll play a record.

I still buy CD's, have about 3,000 of them. I very rarely buy bootleg CD's these days as they are so easy to get around the net to download. I buy the odd DVD but not that many. I no longer own any vinyl at all :);):)

Buy physical media exclusively, unless the material I'm looking for is digital only.

I had to ask myself what was it I truly enjoyed most, the music or the packaging.

As much as I love the experience of the vinyl packaging - original Thick as a Brick being one of my faves - I am mobile, so I can't take the vinyl with me when I travel. I need my music to be portable.

CDs are portable, but the physical experience of CDs is poor. Tiny print, hardly any legible lyrics sheets, small plastic case as opposed to the much more tactile vinyl album cover. So I never bonded with the CDs, there's no romance with them. Vinyl is a thing of beauty. CDs are basically digital media delivery devices.

DVDs and BluRay are like the CDs. Digital media delivery devices.

So I need the MP3s so I can take them with me in my car and where I go. I can get more of them on a phone or USB stick than I could on a CD, so CD is out even as an MP3 delivery platform. In the words of Carl Sagan, "why not simply skip a step" and get the music in a digital format at the time of purchase?

I buy cds but not dvd or bluray that much unless there is a boxset collection that I want.
