Title: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles
Post by: Zzzptm on December 26, 2024, 02:20:50 PM
If the song is about a car, truck, boat, train, plane, rocket, starship, motorcycle... basically, any form of conveyance that liberates humanity from walking and/or running, let it be considered for this list.

I think I'll need to do 20 for the list, since my first two come off of Deep Purple's Machine Head.

Highway Star and Space Truckin'.

Consider those tied for my first place.  :smug:

Not in any particular order... as I haven't selected my full list yet...

Pick No. 1

Rush - Red Barchetta

From the 1981 album Moving Pictures, this dystopian story tells the story of how cars are outlawed but our protagonist has access to his uncles old car which he illegally takes out. A near perfect song where Lifeson make pretty good car noises with his guitar (or so I am lead to believe!).

I was tempted to choose another Rush track... perhaps "Countdown" about the Space Shuttle or maybe "Driven". I discounted Cygnus X-1 as it mainly recounts the journey not the space craft!

Red Barchetta is a song that has aged wonderfully, excellent choice.

Bad Motor Scooter - Montrose

Man, that guy was such a massively "in" guitarist back then. He even managed to -almost- make Sammy Hagar sound like he meant it!

Well this starts well...ZZZ just took two of my potential picks off the table!

Okay for my first pick I'm gonna go with the race car of The Munsters and it was called DRAGULA

Awww yeah this is a great start to the day! Montrose rocked, Hagar somehow didn't learn all he could have learned in that band... and that Rob Zombie track takes me back to Z-Rock in the 90s, good times!

I've got one that might come off of KDC's list: Hawkwind doing Silver Machine

From the comments:

A little bit history about this recording:
"Me and DikMik had been up for four days, right, on Dexedrine capsules, so we're pretty well bent" Lemmy explains. "But we had this gig at the Roundhouse - the one where we recorded Silver Machine - so we had a couple of Mandrax to calm down. Then it got a bit boring so we had two black bombers each.

"We get to the Roundhouse and somebody comes in with a lot of bombers and we take 10 each - a lot. Then someone comes up with some Mandrax and we were getting very twisted up by now so had at least three each to calm us down again. Then somebody came up with cocaine, fucking big bags of it, and we thought we'd have some of that. All this time in the dressing room there is constant smoking - we were all blasted out of our heads on dope. And people were producing acid and mescaline. We all had some of that.

"By the time we come to go on-stage me and DikMik are stiff as boards. I said, I can't move, DikMik, can you?  He went, 'No. It's great isn't it?'  I said, What are we going to do when we can't play? He said 'We'll think of something...' "

"The gig itself was incredible," Hawkwind manager Doug Smith shakes his head in disbelief more than 25 years later. "But that was the thing about Hawkwind. You never really knew how out of it they were because they were like that all the time.  It was insane!

***

This one's from NWOBHM, but re-recorded a few years ago with a rock-solid lineup. Yes, it's Saxon's "Motorcycle Man", awesome track and it still sounds like it's in great state of tune:

Good morning to one and all from Dallas, Texas! :D

Good morning Z!

Freaking Hawkwind lol I think I got stoned just reading that description!

Krokus - Ready to Burn. Features Rob Halford in the chorus!

@Zs

While Hawkwind's Silver Machine (with Lemmy on vocals) did cross my mind, I was pretty sure I was going to choose another one... exactly which one is yet to be decided!

Pick Number 2

The Damned - Motorcycle Man

So I spit on your Motorcycle Man by Saxon and I raise you a Motorcycle Man from The Damned! I was already considering this one even before I saw Zs post!
Title: Re: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles
Post by: Charger on December 28, 2024, 05:11:36 AM
I'm gonna carry on with the motorcycle theme then!

My number 2 comes from WOLFSBANE and it's about leaving your woes behind and not caring about what other people say and just riding your motorcycle.

Wolfies had a few songs about the open road and such but this one I think is the best one!

Krokus rocks, The Damned rocks, and Wolfsbane rocks! But now it's time to get back into a cage and put the keys *in my hand*...

Fu Manchu - "Hell on Wheels"

Amazing drumming from Brant Bjork on the whole damn album, really shines out here.

From 1955 comes a little rockabilly number called Hot Rod Lincoln by Charley Ryan and the Livingston Brothers.

This tune has been covered multiple times, by all kinds of people - Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen probably being the most recognizable. But this is the o-riginal by the guy that wrote it.

Edited to add: I always liked this version because a) I heard it first when I was a little kid and b) the Lincoln in this version has a 12 cylinder engine, not a measley 8 cylinder that for unknown reasons is what everyone else changed it to. And 12 is more than 8 so it must be faster, right? :)

Title: Re: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles

^ Ah yes, the answer song to "Hot Rod Race", and I think the superior of the two. Commander Cody's version is epic, but even more epic is Bill Kirchen's solo version where he does like half an hour of the song, jammin' hard on the rockabilly guitar.

I did my radio show, back to post my second song. I think I'll not go to Black Sabbath's songs yet, as I took two big Deep Purple songs to start with. That being noted, I can only think of two vehicular Sabbath songs.

For my second one, I don't think I'll raid anyone's list with this motoring gem - "Black Devil Car" by Jamiroquai

It's got some heavy in it, but keeps the danceable funk the outfit's known for.

I can only think of one really...Trashed. And maybe Into The Void that has rockets...

I'm now trying to think of another BS transport song!!

Pick Number 3, and I've stuck with the bike theme. "This one's for the Angels in here."

Motorhead - Iron Horse (Born to Lose)

Rusty Angels?

Zeitgeist?

Rusty Angels?

Zeitgeist?

 :smug:

Tomorrow, I plan to post two songs related to World War II aviators. There are 4 I can think of, off the top of my head, so it'll be interesting if they get pipped before I post. But 3 are in English and the fourth is in Russian, so I'll be bowled over if that Russian one gets tapped before I get to it.

Bicycle Race - Queen

The flip-side of the single release of "Fat Bottomed Girls". Will somebody please let the man ride his damn bike!?

For my 3rd pick is gonna be about a truck driver who is called the WHITE LINE FRANKENSTEIN

Alice Cooper has a few songs about the open road and such but went with this one because it's the most recent one and we tend to so often go waaaay back in time with our picks that we need some modern touch as well...and also because...well...this is a KICK ASS song!

Here are two of my faves about planes.

Blue Oyster Cult - ME 262

And if you want the rest of the comic referenced in the video, here is the link: http://www.blueoystercult.com/Media/ME262e.html

My next one is from Aria, nicknamed "The Russian Iron Maiden" and this track makes that nickname quite clear:

Ария - Ангелы Неба / Aria "Angel of Heaven"

I think the video is from a Japanese anime, but it's cut to match wonderfully with the track. You don't need to speak Russian to know this is about flying a Yakolev into combat, guns a-blazin'!  :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:

Pick 4 - Going with a plane related song also.

Saxon - 747 (Strangers in the Night)

I could have gone with Wheels of Steel, but I felt another road song was overkill! Besides I think I marginally prefer this one.
Title: Re: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles
Post by: Zzzptm on December 29, 2024, 11:07:57 AM
^ That's a great one, and yes I think it's better than Wheels of Steel.

Interesting...I prefer Wheels Of Steel by a quite a large margin actually.  :-[

I'm more of a Wheels of Steel guy, myself.

Relatedly, today's pick is Arlo Guthrie's version of The City of New Orleans.

For my 4th pick I'm gonna take it to the skies with DEEP PURPLE!

This is about man tired of all the shit that goes on in the world and he wants his piece and quiet and step away from all of the bs of the world and the way he does that is step into his little airplane and takes it to the open sky!

Always loved this one, a bit of a mellow tune with a fantastic vocal melody!
Title: Re: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles

Two great songs, mellow and fine. Both are big favorites of mine.

And now I start the Monday morning with ENGLISH MAN O'WAR by Saxon!!!

The song has a great feel for a huge warship, turning slowly but relentlessly. And then, the broadside with "And the cannons roar". Genius track and, yes, Saxon does it again with their brand of historical documentary.

But because of the mellow in the previous two songs, I have to reach for a smooth track of my own choosing: "Be Thankful for What You Got" by William Devaughn, often mistakenly attributed as "Diamond in the Back" by Curtis Mayfield.

Smooooooooooooth and mellow and yeah, I got that gangsta lean...

I'll listen to those songs later but for now...

My 5th pick takes us below the seas!

The Sex Pistols - Submission

Is this about a submarine mission or being submissive? The lyrics tend to suggest the former ;). I did consider "Frigging in the Rigging" for a nautical feel, but I much prefer Submission from the 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks.

These guys had some solid metal but aside from a few tracks I could never get into them. I don't own anything they put out. Their album covers always struck me as cartoonish, which isn't unique to them, or even a bad thing in general, but unlike some bands Manowar seemed to take themselves too seriously.

Maybe that's why. But, looking into them now, they don't seem that way.

Anway, Powa Metal in your face, compliments of Manowar, with their ode to street light racers everywhere. Wheels of Fire from 1988:

My #5 comes from JUDAS PRIEST

There are plenty to choose from...Desert Plains, Turbo Lover and so on but I went with the one about a train...a BULLET TRAIN!

This is among my all time favourite Priest tunes and the sheer ferocity of the track is unmatch in their entire catalogue. The riffing is top notch, Tim's vocals are top notch...the whole song is top notch!

^ Takes a page from Highway Star with the opening vocal, there. :smug:

I'm doing the Black Sabbath today.

Trashed. It's about wrecking one's car with intent.

I prefer the re-done version where the sound isn't all muddy and crap. So this one's the Gillan version.  :smug:

Next Black Sabbath vehicle song... TIME MACHINE!!!

I prefer the album version to the movie version, but then I found this live version from 1992 and went with it:

My pick number 6... I may have included it in top 10 we did (but I forget), but something about the London Underground seems to suit this thread...

The Jam - Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

rJust love this song, at the time they were my favourite band, this would be mid-late 1978 from theit All Mod Cons album.
Title: Re: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles

The most obvious Saxon songs have already been mentioned here so I'm taking the one they clearly named after me then.

Well I guess they didn't as it is about drag racing....and ofcourse the title refers to Super Charger's on the engines. But non the less, great tune that is so filled with SPEEEEEED and POOWEEER that even Jezza would approve.

Not really my "thing" but I love this song because I think it is hilarious. And not in a mocking way - I have a good time listening to it. The entire concept of "pirate metal" and these guys play it up! And what's more pirate metal than the pirate ship?! For some reason the entire album makes me think of what the Sex Pistols would sound like if they did metal.

Black Sails at Midnight - Alestorm

^ Three great tunes, fun times for all!

Now I make some adds for the day...

"Train, Train" by Blackfoot. Song was written by the singer's grandfather, who also plays harmonica on the tune. Nice family get-together!

Next one is an ode to the intricate connections between skateboarders and the swimming pool construction and maintenance industry, "Blue Tile Fever" by Fu Manchu:

The blue tiles in question are the ones at the top rim of the swimming pool, indicating the maximum height of a skateboard climb before a jump, grind, or turn became necessary to continue the journey.

Pick #7 - Victorian Iron Clad battle ship...

Jeff Wayne - Thunder Child

From the concept album War of the Worlds by Jeff Wayne which came out in 1978. I do wonder if this song isn't quite as impactful as it might being removed from the environment of the full story. The song is sung by Chris Thompson and the narrator is the legendary Richard Burton.

Note: The song is at the end of side 2 so there is some additional stuff at the end of the video.

My 7th pick comes from MEGADETH!

Again there were quite a few to choose from...Mission To Mars, 1320, Mechanix and so on but I went with my favourite MOTO PSYCHO from The World Needs a Hero!

This is about street racing or just hitting the streets with you're powerful machine and leaving the rest of the world behind.

Kick ass track in my book!

Thrash attack from Russia! The band is Master and the track is Bulldozer:

Then some Swedish biker metal from Honeymoon Disease, "Four Stroke Woman":

Pick number 8

Hawkwind - Space Ship Blues

Surprisingly few Hawkwind songs directly relating to transport. I immediately thought about this one, but thought I'd check their catalogue for others... maybe 3 or 4. Lots of SciFi imagery and all that, but transport is rare!

Anyway I like this one from the 2017 album Into the Woods.

A song about a car and a culture, from 1975.

Either someone's day ahead or I'm day late and a dollar short...either way...

My number 8 comes from BENEDICTUM's final album OBEY and it's called APEX NATION

And yes you guessed it...it's about motor sports!

I'm on my 9th day, did the count back for it.

Vyn ninja'd me on the Low Rider. :smug: Not gonna hate at all.

I do a lot of flying for my job(s) and one track I like to play at the airport, landing or taking off, is "Jet Airliner" by The Steve Miller Band. Given that I actually got caught up in some funky shit going down in the city, it's even more my story now than it was before my last employer...

With that, there's also the gang in Foghat and their question... "Are you ready? Are you ready? Are you ready to take a slooooooooooooooooooooow ride?"  :smug:

Pick Number 9

Golden Earring - Radar Love

Guy drives home to his lover because he gets a telepathic message from her. Often voted as one of the greatest driving songs.

This is the album version which I don't think I've heard before as the single/radio version is a good 2 minutes shorter!
Title: Re: Nobody Gonna Take My Car: Songs About Vehicles
Post by: Charger on January 04, 2025, 08:29:12 AM
So final two left....

And the second to last is a track from IRON MAIDEN...I actually considered putting Run Silent Run Deep here just to have one about a submarine BUT eventhough it's among the better songs on No Prayer it's still not a very good song in Maiden standards...so I went with the one about second world war pilots instead... ACES HIIIIIIIIIIIIGH!

This is one of the few Iron Maiden songs that actually only features verse chorus verse chorus structure.
A great tune and Bruce really pushes his vocals on this one...up to a limit that he could never reproduce live...but this is one of those iconic Maiden fast rockers.

Last one from me:

A song in the grand tradition of storytelling songs about a contemporaneous tragedy. A boat song! The boat sank in 1975, the song came out in 1976. Fantastic.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot

I was leaving Aces High on the table, glad Charger picked it up.

And yes, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a true classic. Great vintage choice there.

On my last round, I'll put in the other WW2 flying song I thought of: "Bomber" by Motorhead.

My last one will be another tune from Blue Oyster Cult... "Hot Rails to Hell", a song about a subway train that needs to step up its air conditioning game...

Do I realy need to say any more? Just a great road early hard rock song.

:D
I intentionally left it late on the list as it's among my favourites and eventhough this list wasn't really in order I wanted the top 3 to be....so there was a chance ofcourse that one of you lot would steal it from me!

Well for the final pick I'm gonna strap you lot on a 12 million horsepower rocket to ride!

This is BLAZE BAYLEY and THE LAUNCH!

A story about being an astonaut and going up in space! This the song that has the most horsepower of them all!
