Top 10 list? Sure, if you can keep it that short. :smug:
Criteria is simple - is it a tender farewell to a dearly departed loved one? NOPE
- is it a philosophical reflection on the nature of things changing? NOPE
- is it a song about how if I never see you again, it'll be too soon? WINNER
(Scene from Seinfeld in which George's girlfriend says, "I am breaking up with you.")
^ The spirit of that moment, but in song form.
Can be about any sort of breakup, be it a job, leaving a crappy place, ending a relationship, getting rid of a junky car, or dealing with terrible customer service. I'm not picky so long as there's that take-charge attitude about ending things on your terms, sayonara and buh-bye.
-
I'll start off with a breakup song for one's Internet service provider:
Todd Rundgren - I Hate My Frickin' ISP
Doesn't matter if he keeps using the service. In his heart, the relationship is *so* OVER.
-
Here's one:
-
Here's a great one:
-
I can't think of any yet, need to research it!
-
Ah yes, Patti Smyth - the perkiest breakup song ever. Good times. :)
Beautiful vocals on the Dark Element song, I enjoyed that one very much, Charger!
Today, I am reminded of Megalomania, which *might* be the only breakup song Black Sabbath did. Best case, one of a small, small handful. Rather than go for the version on Sabotage, I wanted to go with the Asbury Park live performance. No studio stuff, comes across with a sharper, raw edge.
Ozzy's range and delivery in this performance is amazing. The fast part is faster than in the studio, with even more consequent punch and bite. Excellent, excellent version.
-
Ok First Choice...
I was listening to this earlier and if it's not a break up song I don't know what is!
The Stranglers - Sometimes
Live in 2007, with Dave Greenfield (keys) and Jet Black (drums) now both sadly deceased.
-
Great track, Kilo! And there's another wonderful goodbye tribute in their track "And If You Should See Dave". Which reminds me of DP's tributes to Jon Lord... ah, that's the stuff of another thread!
Rip the band-aids off with this one, "Cascades: I'm Not Your Lover" - and I'll go with the Live at the Olympia version:
Been a while since I last spun this, it's fun to play it again, as I really like the horn section in it and the utterly lovely solo from Steve Morse at around the 4:30 mark or thereabouts.
-
Here's another one, leaving a situation on an up note, by someone I don't listen to in a genre I don't listen to (don't ask me how I know about this tune :) )
-
Here's Motörhead saying I'm leaving you in style!
-
^ Thanks to Vyn and Charger, the YT algo is now trying to figure out how I went from David Bowie doing "White Light / White Heat" (something I was playing before coming here) to Lizzo and then to Mötorhead. Always feels good to mess with the algo. :smug:
Gonna stick with Lemmy & Co. for my next pick, as I was reminded of it with Charger's selection. My fave track from Another Perfect Day, "Dancing on Your Grave."
As the title implies, it's a bit of a strong breakup tune. :)
-
Sound quality is pretty rough, but it's the same on other versions of the track on YouTube...
Ronnie Dio & The Prophets - "Where You Gonna Run to, Girl"
From this week in 1965... and it's a break up song, no less!
-
"Dancing on Your Grave," is an excellent fuck you song. Well-played.
Gary Richrath's last hurrah, before the Wagon became even MORE pop - at least Hi Infidelity was still driven by guitar...
-
Pick 2
I'm going to stick with Motorhead theme and go with one of my favourite songs by them...
Motorhead - The One To Sing The Blues
-
For my third one I'll have a ballad...not a huge fan of ballads but this one is pretty good.
MELANIE C - You'll Get Yours
-
REO song: I was a kid when that was on the radio, had a junior high heartbreak to that tune. :)
Mötorhead song: Total banger! :headbanger:
Mel C song: was waiting for this after the Dark Element song. Has a great chill feel, like Delerium remixing Sarah MacLaughlin. Love the hard-edged bridge, that is some tight playing and singing. Very much like the band Hanford Flyover, whose work I'm more familiar with, and that's a good comparison in my view.
That Mel C reminded me of another great tune, albeit from an earlier time... it's Gladys Knight's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", which is much faster than the Marvin Gaye take.
This is Gladys Knight & The Pips performing it in the space station from 2001. :)
-
I didn't know they held concerts at the Space Station....
Not sure if this was intented as a break up song but it doesn't need much to interpret it that way....some kind of bad relationship has been there for sure.
This is SLAYER - EXILE!
-
3rd choice...
Paul Simon - 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
Never a huge fan of Paul Simon, but I've always quite liked this one.
-
Gerri Granger doing "Don't Want Your Letters", the answer song to "Return to Sender." Great answer song, was great fun to discover for my show.
-
Joe Jackson's song about finding the time to move on from work that is wasting one's time gets a dusting of Anthrax and is transformed!
-
Deep Purple - Smooth Dancer
Gillan was done with Blackmore at this point, band was coming apart, so he wrote this lyric on top of the track laid down by the rest of the band. And it's about the guy playing guitar, pretty much right to his face.
Don't think they ever did this one live...
-
Fourth choice, slightly tenuous but I think it counts!
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper
-
I have to say I'm running out of choices here...
I was going to save this for last and well...I guess it's time now then...
MEGADETH - 1000 TIMES GOODBYE
A fantastic song. Musically very very solid and lyrically to the point. One of my favourites from one of my favourite Megadeth albums!
-
I'm posting as I think of them...
Selection 5.
Meatloaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light
I've gotten a little tired of this one over the years, but as long as I don't hear it too often I still quite like it.
-
Did not expect that song from Mr. Loaf to appear in the list. :D
Poison Boys - "Day By Day"
Lyrics are hard to follow until they get to the "I QUIT!" chant at the end, then it becomes a little more clear that this is an unacceptable employment arrangement being discussed in the course of the song.
-
^^^
But you can't deny that by the end of the song they absolutely hate each other!!
Choice 6
Rush - Fly By Night
A song about leaving, maybe it's a regret, but he's got his life to live.
I don't have any more picks at the moment, so I'll add more when I remember them!
-
True, the story arc of Mr. Loaf's song is quite clear on that matter.
And then... RUSH!
Got two for today, one about making one more try and then quitting in style, "Bedside Manner" from the latest Black Crowes album:
The next started with Bobby Womack's family group The Valentinos, got picked up by the Rolling Stones, and then Mr. Womack borrowed it back. "It's All Over Now".
The first Womack version is really country, so I like the Stones' version and then the latter Womack version:
First one is live footage with studio overlay, second is live from The Midnight Special.
For fun, I'll kick in the studio version Womack did in the 70s with Bill Withers, I think it's my favorite of all the versions of the song I've heard.
-
^ Just realized my "two" became 4 rather quickly... I must admit a weakness for that latter song. Bobby Womack knows how to write 'em. :smug:
-
"It's All Over Now" is a great track!
I thought of another one, I think it sits in the same wheelhouse:
The Clash, "Should I Stay or Should I Go"
-
I was wondering about doing a
Ten Favourite sub 3-minute songs?
Or maybe
Ten favourite 10-15 minute songs
-
I'm up for both! I have even done a top ten 10 min+ songs but there might be new ones to be added...who knows... :)
-
Launch it, KDC!
-
Works for me!
