What car your drive and such can be discussed here...
I've had a Camshaft Sensor problem in my BMW for about a year now...changed it 2 times using an aftermarket part and nothing...always the same thing...camshaft sensor error...Well today I finally decided to get a new original BMW sensor and BAM worked right away....
So like an idiot I tried to save few € by bying aftermarket parts but had I just ordered an original straight away from Germany not only would it have cost about the same as the aftermarket part did here I wouldn't have had to change the damn thing 3 times and spend few hours elbows deep in the engine bay. Not to mention a years worth of stress over it... :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:
Lesson of the day...DO NOT try to save money in the wrong place.

My experience with getting around in cars is using one of these:

Must not get around much then? ;D

I've done, but met some characters too, to put it that way. This one guy was VERY gung-ho about telling about his experiences in Thailand. Got out of that car pretty quickly again, i must say... :)
But, yeah, there've been some miles, both metric and English on foot too... Live and let live \../,
-
I got a 2014 Honda Accord. Because I'm a sensible old fart. When I was driving 50 miles to work and 50 miles back each day, I drove a Honda Insight hybrid. Now I work from home, so I can go with comfort over miles per gallon. My wife likes to haul stuff, so she's got a Honda Odyssey van.
There is a pattern here... :)

Honda and Toyota....oh man...I feel sorry for you guys!

2007 Silver Subaru Liberty. Bought it brand new and still done less that 50,000km in nearly 12 years. The first car I ever owned at 18 was 77 XC Ford Fairmont Coupe which was inspired from my love of the Max Max XB Interceptor.

My pride and joy is a 1996 Chevy Corvette. I am the original owner. Now that the car is over 20 years old, it is officially a classic.

My other vehicle is a 1996 Geo Tracker.
-
Pretty looking Corvette there buddy!
Always liked the design of that model.

That is one sweet ride.
Now, if I could have any car and a day at the track with it, I'd want to have a spin with the Pagani Huayra. Love its looks.

This is the one I have been using for years:
:-)
Not always funny, but ecological, and it helps me not to lose sight of the rather poor and marginalised people living in my city.

We've got poor to no mass transit where I live. I love visiting cities with well-integrated mass transit, like Vienna. If I lived there, I'd be fine with walking and riding.
But I live in Texas, and we have large, sprawling cities so I must drive to survive. But it's fun to imagine the roar of a precision engine as I roll along in traffic.

Yeah, I fully understand. Where I come from there is no mass transit at all. Everyone who could afford it had a car. In Berlin, where I am living now, it's much easier.

Thanks! Chevrolet completely revamped the look of the Corvette line for 1997, which I did not like as much. So, I grabbed this one near the end of '96.

I find it interesting how Peugeot is re-branding itself now becoming the sporty make of PSA...
But I believe it is kind of forced since PSA purchased Opel... If Peugeot would have continued in it's old path it would have been in direct competition with Opel...
Even more surprising is though the fact that Citroen is becoming the cheap peoples car now...as that used to be PSA's something of a "luxury" make....so the times change.
Oh and Bog:
A 62 Vette? Really? Wow! If that is in original condition (or atleast with very few modifications) that's like having money in the bank...they are already going for serious money and their prices surely aren't coming down anymore. Such a beautiful car too!
Mod Edit:
I combined these threads as we already had a Cars topic ;)
-
Unfortunately Charge it is not all original as it has a different engine and transmission. My bro totally redid the interior with official Corvette parts, did all the bodywork and re-chromed everything. But it is still a beautiful car and it's got some balls.

Ah...I think these Vette's are classic enough to maintain a good ammount of value even if it's not numbers matching...
Sounds like your brother is quite the car guy...love that!
May I ask what engine it's got? Something bit more modern?

He' got a 327 in it. Not sure if that was stock or if it was the 283. But it's a four speed manual and he changed the rear end gears to give it a little more pop. I don't know if you know about them but he's got the original "Wonder Bar" radio in it.
My brother might be retiring soon so his next project has been waiting in the wings, a 1962 Nash Metropolitan!

I had a 2006 BMW M3 up until last year - now have a 2018 Audi SQ5.
I miss rowing my own gears and hearing the howl of that engine - but that Audi is like being in a space ship. Would love to have a Challenger Hellcat just as a toy, but I'm not in the "car collecting" financial bracket lol.
That's a good looking 'Vette Typhon. One of my favorite body styles.
@Bog - you don't see many Nash's rolling around anymore :metal1:
-
Nash's have gained some real value too in the past few years...So another solid investment too I'd say. Plus they are funny looking little cars too!
How much horsepower does that 327 make?
And Vyn:
You went and changed an M3 to an Audi suv?????
:disappoint:

When my dad died in 1999, I used his 1993 Lincoln Town Car for many years. Best luxury ride in any vehicle I know of. It is a shame that Lincoln no longer makes the Town Car model.

Talked to my brother and he said 1962 was the first year the 327 was available and it puts out 275-300 HP. I had him send me a pic but I can't paste a Jpeg from my pictures folder for some reason.

That's a pretty darn nice number for a car that small indeed.
Yeah you have to upload your pictures to a pic hosting site (like flickr or something) before you can link them here.

Didn't know that about the Jpeg. Thanks Charge.

If you can't handle a Corvette, then don't buy one.
-
No respect for the powa no respect for the bodystyle, too much arrogance to learn how to actually handle a machine like that.
Dumb is gonna dumb.
-
Stupid is as stupid does...
Sad thing about those vettes though...that is one beautiful car...too beautiful to be wrecked like that.

Saw the new Alpine sports car on The Grand Tour. Thinking about starting a crowdfunding so I can get the money to buy one. :)

Well bit of a car service day today...
Changing the valve cover gasket... Let's see what comes out of this...gotta be prepared because something always goes wrong when working on your car...ALWAYS.
-
My son had a wreck the other day, car is totaled, but he's all right. No injuries to anyone involved.
So, it may well come to pass that he gets my old car and I get a brand new one. :D
-
Good news that no one was injured. Now that you're considering a new vehicle for yourself, may I suggest a 2019 Aston Martin Vantage? I hear they are really nice cars...

I think I'd rather have a product of the Mongolian car industry, as demonstrated by Messers. Clarkson, May, and Hammond in their awesome "John" car:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UEOd3GN-6s
^ Handmade with some degree of precision by three sober lads. Admittedly, the sobriety part was against their will...

I finally junked my 2001 Mitsubishi because my 92 year old father doesn't drive anymore and he gave me his 2008 Honda Accord EX-L. It's got 50,300 miles aaaaaannnnnd, it's got a six disc CD changer. :ninja: So I took out his Momma Mia, La Cage au Faux, Andre Rieu and his Lawrence Welk CD's and put in the first 6 Metallica CDs. Great sound, it even has a factory sub-woofer. I'm in love.
-
Wow, I remember CDs... :)
-
I still have a 6cd changer in my car...wouldn't change it for a thing...mp3 quality sucks in cars (too)...

Nobody's ever stole cds from my car either...that must be a texas thing then... ;D
-
Never heard MP3's in a car but I'm lovin' my CD's. :headbanger:
-
ARGH.
Was washing the car earlier and then I noticed the floor was wet in the back...Upon further investigation the water seeps in behind the door card...
And naturally the weather ain't good enough now to tear the door card off and to see what's the problem...and I have to drive it tomorrow again and it's promising rain...darn darn shit.
-
^^^^^^
I assume you don't have a garage. What exactly do you mean by a "door card" ?
The door panel ?
-
I don't have a proper garage no...just one made of tarp which just houses the car...no room to work on it.
Door card / Door panel same difference! :D :
I am assuming the leak comes from somewhere near the bottom arrow in this picture:
-
^^^^^^
Okay, I had never heard it called a card before. It might be difficult to tell exactly where the leak is. 1 suggestion: sit in the back seat while it is raining and try to spot it, or if it is not raining hard enough, set up a garden hose.
-

I know already where it comes from. From the first picture just bit left to the bottom light inbetween the door card (;) ) and the door frame.
There is a plastic moisture preventer panel inside which in my guess has detached from the bottom letting the water in to the wrong side of the door. I have to remove the door card (;) ) in order to see better...but that'll have to wait for better weather.
-
Maybe you should replace the door card with the ace of spades from a fresh deck... :problem:
-
So I recently picked up James Hetfield’s new book “Reclaimed Rust” which has some great photos of his car collection. Here is a cool little video on how his obsession/hobby and enthusiasm for restoring cars came to be.
-
He looks TOTALLY at home in a garage, I love it. And those cars are gorgeous. Lovingly retouched, every one of them.
-
Awesome looking cars!
I have to say I never knew Hetfield was so into cars...that's pretty damn cool.
-
Well I just bought a "new" car...
Should arrive from Germany in two weeks. :excited:
-
Well I just bought a "new" car...

How many years old is it for it to be a "new" car? :D
-
10... :-[
But new to me is what I meant in this case.
-
What make/model of car is it?
-
BMW F10 5-Series.
-
Very nice (I had to Google it ;)), what colour is it?
-
Milanobeige...Not the most attractive color but one cannot be too picky when it comes to colors...espcially since the equiptment list was pretty good and it had pretty much all I wanted...
Active Cruise Control
Lane Departure Warning
4 Zone AC
HUD
Adaptive chassis control
360 cameras
etc...
Price was good too although the mileage is high...but I don't drive that much so it should go for few years..
Once it arrives I can post a pic or two...
-
I look forward to seeing the photos.
-
Hope it's more a Highway Star than a Living Wreck!
-
BMW F10 5-Series.
I first read that as a Ford F-150 lol.
Congrats on the new wheels!

Hahaha! Not here...they cost waaaay too much.
Thanks.

You and me both.
-
Well the car will arrive tomorrow morning which ofcourse means I won't be sleeping much as I'm coming home from work around 5am and the car should be here around 8am...oh well...sleeping's for queers anyways...
-
Fuck sleep.
-
Well the car arrived safe and sound...
It's in pretty good condition...somewhat better than I expected even! One big minus though the last owner was a smoker so the smell is pretty bad...so that needs to be taken care of.
I need to clean the front seats properly the leather's bit dirty but luckily not broken or overly worn. Nothing that a little Le Chat and elbow grease and leather care products wouldn't fix.
Main thing is everything works.
Now I need to wash it so I can take a picture...

Yep, we need to see it!

Driver's seat is very dirty and bit worn so I need to fix that...same goes for the inner door handles on both sides.
I already ordered a new gear shifter which should arrive tomorrow so I'll be able to retrofit that soon...
New instrument cluster is also needed with bit more digital input. That too is on the list.
-
That's a very nice ride! Thanks for sharing the pics :)
-
Pretty sharp looking vehicle. 8)
-
Thanks guys!
I'm pretty happy with it.
Now I just gotta learn the new technology a bit so that I can work on it myself...As I like to tinker with cars. :)
-
It looks to be in good condition. Not the greatest colour but I've seen worse! ;)
I think you said you bought it from Germany. Are all the controls in German?
-
Yeah...I'm not too keen on the color myself...would have loved a darker one, but one can't be too picky when buying second hand cars...
It does shine pretty nicely in the sun though. And once I get a good wax coating on it is should improve a bit more.
English is always an option with german cars so that's not a problem. There's also sweden and russia in the languages list along with turkey but I think I'll stick with English! :D
-
Question is... will you take it on a rally course, or stick to the streets? :)
-
I think I'll stick to the streets...cause I'm a highway staaaaaaaaaar!
First little retrofit done:

Congratulations Charger ! nice car !
you can't go wrong with the German manufacture! and obviously you seem to know the mechanics :pub:
-
Thanks buddy!
One might say you have to know the mechanics if you drive a BMW...but one would be a dick. :D
I've been working on all of my old cars for about 10 years now on my own...this is bit newer and with a lot of electrical stuff that I know nothing about but I have to try and learn as much as I can...the rest I'll have to out source, but luckily I know a guy who has his own BMW repair show and he does good job so what ever I can't do I'll take to him.
-
Knowing the BMW guy is going to be your ace in the hole, that's WAY better than a YouTube how-to video!
-

No doubt. But the experienced guy will help when there's a difference between your make/model and the one being operated on in the video. Things like, "Oh yeah, BMW switched from green wires to pink wires in 2010, so everything they say about green wires, apply that to pink, sure."
-
Indeed!
Having a good repair guy you can trust is a very valuable thing in various ways.

Little bit of leather work today:

Finished:

-
How long did it take to get the grime off the leather?
-
Few minutes of cleaning and about half an hour of coloring.
-
Any chance you might have the vehicle evaluated for residual cocaine before detailing the rest of it? :D

So good thing, then that the leather color is more beige than white, or that song would run through your head every time you looked at the seats! :D
-
Yeah the phone makes it look much whiter than it is...It's actually very beige.
-
How has your BMW been running, Charger?
Have you been driving much?
-
Been working just fine thanks bud!
Bought new winter tires and used original BMW alloy wheels for them...sadly one of the wheels was cracked but I got it fixed last week...tomorrow I'm gonna get the tires fitted on the wheels so they'll be ready for me to put on when the need comes. 245/45R18 Nokian R3 studless tires. Should do fine.
Also changed the bootlid opening button as it was pretty warn down:
Also bought a new "Start Stop engine" button but that's a bit more work and needs a lot of removal of plastic parts so best do that when it's warm again so that'll be for the spring.
Mechanically things seems to work pretty well... I do believe I have to change the fuel injectors at some point next year as well...but that's a standard fix for these engines... They cost about 500€ the 6 as a supply part or around 1000€ as original...we'll see... If it's not a lot of work I might just do that myself...saves about a grand in labour I think.
Since the purchase I have driven around 3000km (around 1900miles) been a joy to drive...very nice driver's car this still...even with all the modern tech.
-
So, last night I had a dream that I was filming a car thing with Jeremy Clarkson in China. I was trying to follow him through some narrow streets and lost sight of him. At an intersection, I asked a local, "Mei guo? Zai nar mei guo?" and all the locals at the intersection would point down one road. I kept going that way, asking that question, and getting that response until I finally caught up to him.
When he asked how we found him, I related the question I asked. When he asked what it meant, I replied, "The American? Where is the American?" :smug:
At that point in my dream, Clarkson laughed heartily and then put me in a headlock and tried to ram my noggin into the gas tank of a nearby vehicle. Fun for all.
:haha4:
-
Bit of work on the car again...changed the radiator grills:

New M5 style grills in place:
Looks better me thinks...much better in fact.
-
Looks like someone has painted over your license plate, might want to have that cleared up before you go driving! :D
That new grill looks quite smart!

Oh damn...didn't notice that...thanks for the heads up!
Posted the same pics on a local bmw forum and don't really want my plate number doing the rounds as you can get all of my info with it...
-
Do you plan to blacken any other trim parts?
-
Do you plan to blacken any other trim parts?
No need...that was thing. As this is a Shadowline (which means all the exterior trim is glossy black from the factory) but for some totally incomprehensible reason the kidney grills were still in chrome...never understood why. I wanted to unify the look thus getting rid of that chrome. If the window trim would have been in crome (aka chromeline) I probably wouldn't have changed the grills either.

In other car news, the new Grand Tour episode came out last night. Definitely a fun episode, especially when James May's car is overwhelmed with sewage.
-
I have pretty much decided to buy that new tv after christmas anyways...whether it's on sale or not just so that I can get Amazon prime and start watching The Grand Tour....!
-
The Seamen episode was pretty choppy, but the latest one and the Mongolia adventure were great fun, Mongolia especially.
-
Even during the Top Year days those specials could be a bit of a hit and miss...but they all had some cracking moments though.
-
Looking at the list of specials, I see:
USA
Polar Canada
Botswana
Vietnam on bikes
Bolivia, Chile
Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel
India
Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania
Burma/Thailand
Patagonia Special
Namibia, Angola
Mozambique
Colombia
Mongolia
Vietnam/Cambodia on boats
Madagascar
I loved them all up to India - that one was a big miss. Back on their horses for finding the source of the Nile, but Burma and Patagonia were disappointing. Namibia by beach buggy was some great fun, but Mozambique was a bit dodgy, even though it had its moments. Colombia was spectacular, Mongolia was fantastic, Seamen a dud, Madagascar not the best but still a good one.
-
^^^
I thought there was an Argentina one where they gor run out of the country? Or was tha the Patagonia Special
-
Top year?!?!?!
Anyhow... Yes the Argentina incident happened during the Patagonia Special. That was a cracking one.
I remember quite enjoying the India one. The Africa special is probably my favourite...then one with Oliver...that was a real fun ride.
The ones from Namibia onwards are Grand Tour ones already though...not Top Year ( )
-
Hammond still has Oliver and takes him out for a spin. Makes me kinda wish I had an Oliver, too. :D
-
Yup he does. Which is kinda cool...
-
I love seeing what happens to some of the vehicles used to film the specials, more than once the cheapo cars used by the lads have outlasted the fancy new land cruisers the film crew uses.
-
I've just watched te Pirate / Madagascar episode this morning. That was fun, but oh, those poor cars! Started watching the Seaman / Cambodia episode and gave up after about 20 minutes, I might try again at some point but not now.
-
The boaty one is a bit miserable, to be sure. Re-watch the Mongolia one and feel good about it all. :D
-
Bit more work on the car today...
Changed the instrument cluster from the original basic model:

To the newer enhanced model:

-
Ooooh, pretty! I like the lines at the bottom.
-
You're turning that car into a brand-new car, one bit at a time!
-
Haha! Well not quite as I am using second hand parts for these electronic upgrades...
-
^^ Vyn's comment reminds me of the old Johnny Cash song, "One Part at a Time". Hilarious little tune about smuggling parts out of a factory, one at a time, every day for a few years, to build a car for free.
So glad to see that Charger is NOT trying that at home, or he'd have a Frankencar for sure!
-
Bit of spring cleaning...had a nice day so washed the car...

Also polished the exhaust ends:

Can spot the difference further away as well...compare this to the first pic:

Niiiiiiiiiiice. Just don't take it through a rally stage and the wash should hold up for a while!
How's the pollen in Finland? It can leave a car coated yellow here in Texas, when the wind blows it in from all parts of the continent...
-
How's the pollen in Finland? It can leave a car coated yellow here in Texas, when the wind blows it in from all parts of the continent...
Pollen can be crazy here...especially spruce pollen. I've had a car coated yellow by that stuff after I left it out to dry after a wash...let me tell ya that wasn't a funny moment.
-
Ugh! I know EXACTLY what you mean! The wash becomes a prison for the pollen and it just smears everywhere!
-
Yeah....not a fan of pollen...at all...luckily spruce and pine pollens aren't allergenic though...
-
Welcome to Texas, home of the MOUNTAIN CEDAR POLLEN. It's worst around Central Texas, in the Austin area.
-
Everything is bigger in Texas...including the pollen counts! ;D
-
... and then there's Australia... where things are bigger AND poisonous!
Ever hear of a road train?
-
Oh yeah...there was a tv show about Australian truckers on discovery which I used to watch...but honestly there was never a road train quite that long on the tv show! :wtf:
-
It's even wilder to see them going across the land on a dirt road, amazing stuff.

Bit of car service today again..
Oil change and also did the oil cooler gasket replacement as it was leaking a bit...

New gaskets in and cleaned up waiting for the cooler install:

All day job this little thing as there were couple of tricky bolts that needed some fiddling and ofcourse coolant ran out as well so needed to top that and let the car preform an auto air bleed process as well...and lots and lots of cleaning for all the spilled oil...
Still on the to-do-list are the spark plugs and the air filters (engine and cabin)...tomorrow's a rainy day so that'll be thursday's job.
-
Well done, Charger.
Over here, our lease on the Odyssey van is running out and my wife is looking to get a CR-V hybrid as a replacement.
-
Thanks... :)
Don't know much about Hondas part from the fact that their suspension tends to be bit on the tight side for most models...and that doesn't always make for a comfortable ride...
-
Thanks... :)

Thankfully, it's not bad on the Accord I drive or the Odyssey. CR-V uses the same chassis as the Accord, IIRC, so it should be a similar ride.
We went on a 3000-mile road trip in an Insight a few years ago. It was fun, but a hard ride. :)

Ah, Charger! You make me want to do better with my car maintenance! Looks like I need to start vacuuming my interior when I take it to the wash.
My wife has been getting after me for years to do that, but I needed one more point of information and now it clicks.
-
I usually vacuum the interior in every 2 months or so...winter is bit harder cause of the weather limitations but from spring to autumn every 2 months. Makes a huge difference.

Hahah! :D
No I already took those...posted them on the local BMW forum...just didn't think about posting them here as I thought there might not be so much interest in that....thanks for proving me wrong! :)

I have not purchased a vehicle in over 20 years, but back in February I bought a 2020 Lincoln Nautilus. It was a very advantageous time to buy. The dealership was overloaded with 2020 models and needed to clear out their stock. Most of the models they had were 4 cylinder, but I went with this 6 cylinder twin turbo.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Jz8pRm50/003.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Lincoln is known for luxury, and I have owned a couple of Lincoln Town cars before. The Nautilus does not disappoint. Here is a shot of the interior. Note the buttons running down the left side of the information screen are the electronic shifting, which took a little getting use to, but I am comfortable with it now.
(https://i.postimg.cc/CKLJfNtV/006.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Because the electronic shifting requires less parts, there is more room in the middle of the console for storing items, like important CDs. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/xCXR6dnx/005.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
-
What's the story with the vehicle top? Is that a sunroof or adjustable tint glass?
-
Oh that looks nice! I've always liked Lincolns myself. Navigator is a great looking SUV...
Never heard of the Nautilus before though, but it looks rather nice.
The button shifter thing isn't very handy though...I've driven one once (Hyundai) and it takes forever to change...hope that's better in yours.
-
That Volume 4 CD is very nice! So's the Lincoln - they've always put out solid vehicles.

The Lincoln MKX was renamed to Nautilus in 2019. Part of the exterior and most of the interior was overhauled for this crossover SUV. The Navigator you mentioned looks like a Nautilus on steroids. It is an enormous vehicle with an added 3rd row of seating.
The electronic button shifting does work very fast, no waiting.
What's the story with the vehicle top? Is that a sunroof or adjustable tint glass?
Both really. The glass extends clear over the rear seats. The half over the rear seats is fixed. The front half can slide completely open or slightly tilt to use as a vent. The whole glass can be covered by a powered interior sliding panel. Here is a shot of the cluster of buttons above the mirror that runs it all. The 3 dark buttons in the upper left corner (only 2 are showing in the pic) I programmed to operate my garage doors. The oval panel at the top of the picture is for storing my sunglasses.
(https://i.postimg.cc/ydVHLHCt/Nzutilus6.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
With all these controls overhead I feel somewhat like a pilot rather than a driver. 8)

Excellent! I love a good sunroof / upper window setup. Natural light is great for enjoying the drive! Well chosen, sir!

Very cool! Ah it the MKX...now that I do know. Lincoln however has never been officially imported to Finland...atleast not since the 70s I think. But some have been brought in second hand...
Good to hear that the button shifter works well.
I personally don't like that whole glass roof thing. I've got a small glass sun roof in mine but I always keep the blind on it because I hate the way the sun shines in...it's very distracting at times. Especially when wearing sun glasses which I always have to wear because of my eyes being so sensitive to light...

I partly agree. In the midday of summer, I close the blind. Cloudy days or dusk, I can leave it open. On pleasant evenings, I have opened the roof. It all depends on weather conditions and temperature. Similar to using the side windows, in a way.

My goodness, never seen such a great roof equipment! I didn't know you could order garage doors right from the car itself without needing the usual controls, you know, the ones we always lose :D
but I also have your musical option in my collection !
congrats, beautiful car !

^^^^^^
Thanks very much, gentlemen.
I only wish we could all go for a drive some time.

100% agree with the gentleman from Massachusetts. (Quick, make sure the boards didn't just crash! :D ) I don't need the sun directly on top of my head when it's already plenty hot. But when things are cooler It's a good way to get a breeze without having it hit my face, like it does at speed with the window down.
Convertibles involve more commitment to open and shut and impact the structure of the vehicle. Sunroofs are, in my view, a good compromise to get what Jeremy Clarkson described as "93 million miles of enjoyment". Even if it's only cracked open, the fun level goes up on the road.

One of our works vehicles was a Renault Traffic back in the 2000s (obviously a much earlier version). It didn't look as nice as that one!

Wow ! I didn't know that Renault vehicles were available at the antipodes ! congrats Jack ! is that you in the reflection of the side of your van ? 8)
-
Thanks Tyr. Most cars in Australia these days are European and Japanese imports. Local manufacturing is no more unfortunately. I was tossing up between a Ford Transit Custom, Peugeot Export and the Renault Traffic. Given manufacturing overseas has slowed due to the pandemic and now the global chip shortage, new cars are in very short supply so it was going to be at least a 6 month wait on both the Transit and Export and this particular Traffic was one of only a few available in my State, so took the plunge and bought it.
-
is that you in the reflection of the side of your van ? 8)
No that’s my brother in law. He owns 3 Renault Traffics and took me to see his dealer.
-
I live in the USA. What's a Renault?
But, yes, good that you got the van when there's so much shortage right now.
-
Renault/Nissan/Opel is a pretty damn good van. My cousin had a Traffic...it was the older model but it was a good van. He backed it into a trailer though and it got totalled. But it had a good ride and best of all a great big load compartment.
I think you made a good choice. I like the color too. Looks to be the basic model with the black bumpers...or are the some regional differences in that...most sold here have body colored bumpers.

Its more the mid range model. Premium Auto 2.0 Turbo SWB. The model up has keyless entry, alloy wheels and a couple of minor add ons over it. https://www.renault.com.au/build-and-price/build/select-vehicle/

Congratulations, Jack! That's a slick looking van. And yeah, the new car market is hosed everywhere. I've had several offers on my car lately, offering stupid money - so much so I'd sell it in a heartbeat. Except there isn't anything available that I want/can afford. I'd have to order something, with no idea when it would actually arrive. Nope.
-
Best of luck with the new vehicle, Jack. If you are getting your band back together, then this thing should be able to haul the equipment, no problem. :D Just one thing, it looks like the name on the vehicle is missing an "F". ???
-
It's French buddy... Traffic is spelled Trafic in french. ;)

Did not even realise Renault Trafic was spelt with one F :twitch:

Question: is that salt on the driveway? Or some other de-icing compound?
-
It's gravel mixed with some foam car wash! :D
-
Ah, well that's something I didn't consider. I was getting around to asking if you had a "winter beater" car that's used when the roads are bad and all the salt is spread to deal with ice. Many people in the northern US will have a beater car, wondering if that was a thing elsewhere as well.
-
There's a lot of salt on major roads here as well...and yes bunch of people have beaters for winters here as well.
Luckily living out here in the country side I can commute pretty much without salting my car...there's one quater mile stretch of road that's salted but that's it...and I can avoid that too if I want to.
Also salt only works in over -6C temps so when it's cold there's no salt...so that's one positive thing about the cold...
Cars around here do tend to rust bit more than lets say up north or in center Europe.
-
Along the Texas coast, salt is a year-round thing because of the sea air, no getting away from it there.
-
Ah yeah ofcourse....
The Baltic Sea is very low salt sea...in fact it's more like a lake so not a whole lot of salt in the sea air here.
-
Question came to mind...
You get a new car for day-to-day driving, but you have to let either Clarkson, May, or Hammond pick it out and deliver it to you. Who do you want to pick out your car? All three will know that this is a day-to-day driver and won't pick a mad supercar or high-maintenance classic car.
-
Hmmm...that IS an interesting question...
May would pick something horrid like Dacia Sandero....Hammond would go with some older than jesus british car and Clarkson would probably go with an Alfa which would break down every two miles...
So honestly...I wouldn't want any of them to pick me a daily driver...it sure as heck wouldn't be a good one! :D
-
May would pick something horrid like Dacia Sandero...
 EXACTLY my thought!
But I could see Clarkson going with a Merc or BMW saloon. Hammond would pick a Ford truck. :D For me, Hammond is out for sure. I'm not a truck guy. But I do usually agree with James May, so I might just put my trust with him.
-
Clarkson might go with an M3 or an M5 I suppose...but those are bit on the sport car category though so I didn't think about them so much...
Hammond does like his trucks yeah...he just bought one for his new shop too...and a Ford naturally! :D But trucks aren't really good for daily driving though...
May could also go with some new electric cars though...he's into those...But sadly he might go for a Tesla and those are so shitty...no thanks.
-
But May could also suggest an Alpine, which he absolutely raves about. I wouldn't mind one of those as a daily driver!
-
The Alpine might not be a bad one...not sure how it would work as a daily driver though...not a lot of boot space for your shoppings! :D
-
Hardtop luggage carrier, maybe?
-
Or just buy all your stuff online with home delivery and use the car for what's it's meant to...DRIVING! :D
-
Or just buy all your stuff online with home delivery and use the car for what's it's meant to...DRIVING! :D
BINGO!
"With home delivery for nearly everything, provided by the sponsors of this programme, our daily drivers can get a little more... mad!"

Bit of car work again today...
Had some consumption issues (with a 1.5l per 100km increase) but no fault codes or anything...that lead me to believe (based on reports online) that the NOX-sensor had gone so I ordered a new improved one and installed it....and things seem to be working fine again...consumption back to where it belongs around 8.2l per 100km...very good result for a 30 minute work...
-
I'm due for the state inspection and tax payment. Fun fun fun fun fun... not.

Both rear springs are broken so today I was able to change one and tomorrow the other...
Not an easy job but doable...Would be easier if I'd have a lift but I don't so to jacks and a wet ass is what I had to work with....the wet ass came from working on the wet ground not because I shit myself from the ordeal...

There's a tractor in the background of the second picture. Is that yours or are you keeping it for a friend?
-
Nope...just a tractor tire! :D Out of an old Ford Major to be exact...it just came in for a fix though...not ours.
There are quite a few tractors however around...I do live on a farm after all! ;)
-
Well, if you get a tractor, share the pictures! Just don't get a Clarkson-ghini, it's too big!
-
Well I did own a tractor several years ago... Wasn't Clarkson's Lambo size though... ;D
-
That's good, means it was probably useful, like Kaleb's.
-
Starter motor went out on my Accord. It's in the shop now, after getting towed.
-
HONDAAAAA!!!!
-
"My starter went out."
"Oh, that's bad news."
"No, it's good news."
"How so?"
"They also found out that my brakes on the front wheels were going out."
:smug:
-
Perhaps Honda has a system that kills the starter when the front brakes get sketchy. "We're concerned that you might not be able to stop, so we're just going to go ahead and make sure you can't even start!"
-

If so, I would suggest an improvement in merely breaking the circuit and not actually burning out the starter motor. :D

Clean machine! That's why I enjoy getting into a rental car, it's always cleaned out and fresh.
-
Clean is nice! :smug:
-
Meanwhile in Dallas, the coat of yellow pollen continues on its relentless march...
-
We're not quite there yet so I'm hoping I'll manage to wax and coat the car before that begins.
-
Got the car washed today...tomorrow it's time to put a few coats of wax on it!
-
Good job on that. Right now, my car is in a Dallas airport parking lot. Get to drive it again on Thursday evening. :D
-
Car got some shine back!

Cleaned up the engine bay as well!

Looks sharp!
-
Thank you sir!
Changed the oil today...
The oil separator membrain seems to be broken so I ordered a new one... BMW says it cannot be changed as it is intregrated into the valve cover so that you'd need to change the entire valve cover (500€) but I found a company that has made a repair kit for just 80€ so I went for that...needs some DIY stuff but I like that kind of tinkering anyways.
So need to do that as soon as the part arrives.
-
Mr. May in perfect, pedantic form. I do love the bits where Clarkson and Hammond don't interrupt him. :D
-
Bit of engine work today...The PCV ventilation valve in the valve cover had let out a while ago already but knowing it might be a bit of a task to replace it (as per BMW it CANNOT be changed but the entire valve cover needs to be replaced at the nice price of 500€) I had put it off eventhough I had the part that I found online on the shelf for few weeks...
Anyways the job was fairly easy and the part itself cost only 70€ so quite a bit cheaper than the whole valve cover replacement which BMW gives as the only choice.
The valve sits under this pressed plastic cap.
Which needed to be cut off:
The rubber valve revealed underneath:
Clean everything up, new valve in, glue it in place and a new shiny aluminum cover on and job done:
Whole job took about 3 hours two of which were waiting for the glue to dry...
And now the car seems like it has a new lease on life. Feels like it gained 20hp and no more idling issues. Job well done.
Very few things are more satisfying than mechanical work on a car...getting your hands greasy and getting it done. Love it.
-
That's a great story - and a nifty bit of know-how should anyone else find themselves in a similar situation.
-
Thank you kind sir.
-
Taking advantage of the last warm day of the year and detailed the car exterior. I was planning on doing the interior as well but ran out of juice for that...

"Last warm day of the year" - for Finland.
We have the last warm day of the year in Texas around December 31st! :D
Great looking job on the car, Charger!
-
^^
Hahah! We sure live in different climates! :D
Thanks!

13 years ago! I try to keep it looking nice! :)
-
Changed summer tires on and noticed that the right side front spring is cut.
Arse.
Not a massive job but still a pain...well I have a week off next month so I guess I'll be changing some springs then.
-
That sucks. I have not wrenched on a car in years (actual work, not changing a battery or oil). I'd probably just make things worse if I tried at this point lol.
-
It crazy expensive to have your car fixed around here so I kind of have to do everything myself. Can't afford not to. But frankly car work isn't all that hard...and it's kind of fun too.
-
Well some engine work coming up tomorrow before I'll tackle the springs.
Bought a new valve cover as I do believe the old one is cracked....a typical problem with these plastic ones... New one cost 200€ so it's not a crazy expensive fix. Also not a very big job. Should be done tomorrow. Only need to remove the fuel lines to the injectors and the eletrics for both injectors and coils...and open 32 (or so) bolts....Hopefully nothing's snagged and hopefully nothing breaks...
-
At the National Transportation Museum in St. Louis, we heard "Highway Star" as we walked in. Auspicious!
The car building included some EXCELLENT rides from the classic days of car making, including Bobby Darin's insanely tail-finned ride from 1960. I'll be back home on Friday and can work on uploading the pics then. These were some sweet, sweet, rides.
-
I bought a new polishing machine and tried it out on the car today!
I went through the whole car and it worked a treat! Even with a very basic cleaning wax... I have never been able to get the surface so smooth by hand so a well spent 149€ for that one!
Tomorrow another coat of polishing wax and the old boy should be presentable again.
-
How long does it take to apply a coat of wax?
-
About an hour or so...bit less with the machine and much easier on the arm!
Put another coat on today..just by hand...
-
It's always a great feeling waxing one's car...for a brief time it's almost like it is frictionless.just from the little bit your picture shows, your car is looking fantastic!
-
Indeed...and I have to say that machine made an even smoother surface than I ever could by hand!
Here's couple of shots after the second coat! I got a pretty decent shine....not perfect by any means but I'm happy with it!

Beautiful!

On a side note, every time I see the thread title, that Gary Numan song pops into my head.

Luckily don't know that one! :D
Some final touch ups today...plus the oil change...and engine air filter and cabin air filters.
Exhaust tips were grimey:

Now they are not:

The old boy ain't too bad looking now.
Next is the enterior clean up...but that's for next week!
-
Those exhausts went from ooh to ahh!
-
Indeed! And a full 10 minutes of work time! ;D
-
James May will award you a commendation for thoroughness forthwith!

Hahah! I'd rather have him sent me a bottle of his gin!

The man has his priorities!

No, you get cheese.

Ahahahaha!

CHEEEEEEEESE!

Well for more cheeeeese I did some seat painting.

Light colored seats are a bitch..
-
That's a great job bringing those seats back to a respectable appearance. I have never owned a vehicle with a light-colored interior, and for as much of a PIA the upkeep on dark colors is, I can only imagine what you have to go through for light colors.
-
Yeah...this is the second light colored leather car I have. One thing that's an absolute no no is jeans. You can't wear any jeans as they stain the seats very quickly. But even softer fabrics can stain...so you do need to clean them quite often. I try to do so once a month.
-
In case any of you were looking for a nice compact car, here you go. :))
-
Perfect for those narrow parking garage spots downtown!
-
Well now that is Narrow! That might be easier to flip than the Reliant Robin!
-
Fortunately, it might be easier to flip back up. :)
-
Finally got around to giving it the annual summer wash. :)

I like American cars like that, they look the part. I couldn't tell you what it is mind!
-
That'd be a C4 Corvette! Very cool inded! That's my favourite Vette! The digital instrument cluster on that one is retro cool!
What year is that Typhon?
-
^^^^^^
It is 1996 and I am the original owner. But it was a few previous years that the instrument cluster was all digital. Then the car buffs started complaining that they felt a hot rod should have gauges. So Chevrolet brought gauges back.
In my picture you can see a screen flanked by gauges left and right. I can select which digital reading to show in the screen of any gauge, along with speed limit and fuel info, using the buttons to the upper right.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pr59tx1W/Dash-1.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
KDC is right, though. Today's Corvettes have more of a European look.

-
Ah such a late model! Well if memory serves me right those digital clusters did suffer from a lot of issues too so I guess it was reasonable to bring back old school gauges.
Wow. you've had that almost 30 years now! That's so cool!
-
This was the only other Corvette I had before the current one. A 1988 model that I bought used. Looks very similar, but there are a number of differences. Most notably, the wheels, edges not as rounded, and the tail lights were circles rather than squares with rounded corners.
@Charger: Below you will see the all digital instrument cluster you were speaking of. So, no gauges.

Yes that's the instrument cluster I connect with the C4!

I got this Kubota ATV a couple of years ago, to help me with chores around my property. It was getting to tough to move stone or wood with a wheel barrel.

Well, that looks kinda cute!
Again I don't recognise it.

Thought I saw it lurking in the garage in an earlier photo. :)
Is it electric or gas-powered?
-
Bit of brake work today.
New Front pads and slide pins. Discs probably need changing in the near future, but did not do them now.
Easy job...all the bolts opened nicely too...thanks to only being in Finnish winter climate (and road salt) for 5 years!
-

Got distracted by Ozzy's death and forgot to answer this.
Gas powered with 17.5 horsepower engine.

Caliper looks ugly now....but can't be bothered to paint it now...maybe next spring if I feel up to it.
-
Honestly, a clean engine is better eye candy than clean calipers. I'm cool with those not getting painted.
-
Yeah same here...if I'd have really open wheels then I might have to pain that but now I'm not gonna be bothered.
-
Yeah, enjoy the clean engine and the interior/exterior details you can see.
BTW, did you polish that bug?
-
The bugger flew off before I could do that...little stinker.

Send him an invoice for materials. Show him you mean business! :)
