We all know about PVC sleeves and the damage they can cause to vinyl records. They do the same thing to coins, as well.
I have a very small (like maybe 100) coin collection I inherited from my grandfather. Nothing worth any kind of money, but a random assortment of coins and tokens from around the world. They are in a box, and each one is housed in its own little "flip" holder made out of our friend PVC. One side of the flip case allows a coin to be inserted, the other side accepts a small piece of paper where info about the coin can be written. If you haven't seen on before, here is an old Chinese cash coin in one, laid out flat - it folds together into a small square:

I pulled them out today because I haven't looked at them in years, and figured I'd better look into the flip cases they are stored in, due to my experience with record sleeves. And yes sir, according to the American Numismatic Association, those bastards will leach onto the surface of the coin and cause misery and heartache. So, if you have any, find something else to put them in. The round, hard plastic containers get a thumbs-up from the ANA, so I'm going to get some of those. Just thought I'd share the info as a public service announcement - thankfully only a couple have the tell-tale white haze in some spots. And these things have been stored in those flip cases for no telling how many years.
PVC can suck it.

Do the same thing to comic books, I imagine. Nasty stuff, shouldn't have ever been used for storage.

That's pretty messed up...and pretty strange. So that PVC can react to metals as well is something bit new to me.
Vinyls and comics I can understand...but coins...yikes. That is some evil weevil stuff right there! Who ever thought it would be good for storing items should be hung from his nuts...or if it was a woman from her tits!
