It's already been going a couple of weeks... 1 big group of 10 teams in which everyone plays everyone else.
I think it's the top 4 who go through to play semi-finals and as things stand - after 3 games each - I'm not sure England or Australia will be troubling the latter stages of the tournament!
England have lost 2 of their 3 games including to minnows Afghanistan! Australia have lost both their opening two games and lie bottom of the table they are playing Sri Lanka today but SL didn't make a great score so a good chance that the Aussies will get a win.
At the top of the table it looks good for New Zealand, India and South Africa, all currently unbeaten.
-
... and there's about a month of games to go in the process. Australia handled SL in good order. Looking ahead, the Aussies may have a bigger hill to climb vs Pakistan later in the week and the England team has a must-win to be relevant vs South Africa.
-
South Africa somehow managed to lose to lowly Netherlands today.... but SA are still in good shape.

Is it a case of roughly equal talent or is this a case of SA having a really bad day at the same time NL had a great day?

Netherlands are very much 9th or 10th in terms of rank, South Africa could easily win this tournament. What might have happened is that SA rested some players and it back-fired, or, as you suggest they just had a bad day.

Australia have found their mojo, and are in with a good shout of going through.
England are still looking for their mojo... indeed, going from bad to worse! So todays game against South Africa wasn't going to be easy, but losing by nearly 230 runs is embarrassing! I think they need to win all their remaining games to have a hope of proceeding.
-
230 runs is baaaaaaaad...
-
Yesterday India beat New Zealand, and might be firm favourites now.
Today Afghanistan surprisingly beat Pakistan by 8 wickets. England are now bottom of the table!!
-
ooof for England, yay for India! :smug:
-
Yeah Australia seem to have found their groove now. No certainly to make the final 4 just yet but if Pakistan and England continue to lose it will definitely help the cause. Been a number of upsets in this World Cup. India are looking strong, playing with a lot of confidence. They ain’t seeming to feel the pressure of expectations playing in a home World Cup.

Glenn Maxwell just hit the fastest century in World Cup history. 101 from 40 balls. His reverse slog sixes were insane. He came to the crease in the 39th over. Crazy!
Australia finished on 399/8
-
Far better score than I thought after 40 overs, although the Netherlands are going struggle against any score over 250. I just checked the reply... I think they might struggle to get 100!
-
Australia needed a win like that to really boost their net run rate which is going to be vital come the end of the group games.
-
Oh... For... Fucks... Sake!!!!!
AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
-
What the fuck is wrong with England? Do they only use Bazball for test cricket?
-
Oh... For... Fucks... Sake!!!!!
AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
I gather from the context that England's cricket team has done poorly?
-
Oh, look! England humiliated again! At least it was by a decent team (India) this time!
I'm wondering if they're involved in some sort of betting scam!! :-X
-
It's Englnad vs Australia today. If England lose they are definitely out... if they win they are probably out but not mathematically.
Australia lost a couple of early wickets but I don't hold much hope that England will keep the total particularly getable!
-
Go cricket!
-
Australia won by 33 runs... can't say I care anymore, England have been garbage this whole tournament! :wall:
-
Go cricket team! :)
-
So Afghanistan gave Australia a fright, The Afghans made a solid 291 in their 50 overs and then had Australia at 91 for 7...
... then Maxwell took over and smashed 201 to take them to the target with overs to spare. It was quite interesting that in that 202 runs scored after the 7th wickets fell Cummins only scored 12 of them!
-
Netherlands looks like they can take this one from England. Looks like India, South Africa, and Australia will be the top three, but it's going to be a knife fight for the 4th finals slot!
-
Er, no! Netherlands lost by about 150 runs and never looked in contention. I would say though that England had a good-ish day with the bat scoring 339, but if they were fully on form I think you would have been looking at 400+!
So the 4th spot is between, New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore if Sri Lanka beat NZ and England beat Pakistan then Afghanistan will go through if they can beat South Africa!!
-
The group stage was completed today with India inflicting a comfortable defeat of the Netherlands (410-4 vs 250 all out).
India top the table having won all 9 of their games. The other 3 to go through to the next stage are South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
They'll have a few days off before the Semi Finals.
-
This is it, the final four!
And well done, southern hemisphere! 3 of the 4 teams in the finals are on the low side of the equator.
-
Yesterday India swept past New Zealand and into the final. India made 397-4 in their innings and while NZ made a valiant reply they ultimately fell 70 runs short.
Today South Africa play Australia. SA have started poorly standing at 44-4 after 14 overs. But rain has held up play
-
INDIA JEET HAIN!!!!
OK, so I know what to say when India wins a cricket match from Bollywood movies, but I do have a soft spot for things of that nation. :)
-
The final takes place today, it has just started. India are batting first.
-
In the end it was a comparatively easy win for Australia.
India lost steady wickets and could only muster 244 runs in their innings. And despite losing 3 wickets for 47 Australia were steered home by Head and Labuschagne with Head falling just 5 runs short of the target having made 137.
India's first defeat of the tournament but then Australia are unbeaten after the opening two games.
-
Well done, Australia!
