Title: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 04, 2023, 06:58:36 AM
We haven't had a good music discussion/battle in a long time so I thought this might be a fun idea.

Let's do something of a battle of the Title Tracks from our favourite bands and albums.

So the idea is that we'd take this band at a time and put their album title tracks in order best to worst (or to be more precise favourite to least favourite) all through out the bands career.
Ofcourse some bands will have more title tracks than others so some lists might be very short.

We can ofcourse also have open discussion about those title tracks as well...what makes them good what doesn't.

So which band should we start with?

I know...

BLACK SABBATH

That's an easy one to start with I'd say....

1. Heaven And Hell
2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
3. The Mob Rules
4. Black Sabbath
5. Headless Cross
6. Eternal Idol
7. Forbidden
8. Born Again
9. Paranoid
10. Never Say Die
11. Seventh Star

That's my list....what are yours?

As I kind of expected no two lists would be the same which is ofcourse great.

Born Again is a bit of a sludgy song for sure...Ian's vocals are great but it seriously lacks punch...it's just not going anywhere.

But Vyn? Paranoid #1?? What's that all about? The crowd demands explanation!

Hahaha, yeah, about that...

When Paranoid came out, I heard it on the radio. It was the first song from Black Sabbath I knew about, and it blew me away. It gets the number one spot for that reason alone. Ozzy's voice, the riff - hearing that between something by the Archies and followed by whatever Three Dog Night's latest was, it made a huge statement to my young mind. A more objective appraisal of the song from today's perspective would place it somewhat lower down the list.

But as a plaintively authentic song with no bullshit added, it hit me like no other when I was a kid.

First impression means a lot when it comes to music. I could’ve had anyone of my top 5 at number 1 on any given day, but I’ll always do a pecking order on first impressions if I’m having trouble separating them. Paranoid is a great song. Theres a reason why they closed with it every night.

Post by: Charger on October 07, 2023, 06:09:30 AM
Well the reason they played it as an encore was because it was the big commercial hit and a growd favourite. ;)

But yeah I can fully understand the power of the first impression. That's why I hold albums like Dehumanizer, The X Factor and Jugulator so I high as they were the first albums from those bands that I ever heard and that means those were the soundtracks of my life at the time. Same for the albums that came after them, Cross Purposes, Virtual XI and Demolition. I lived those albums so I still love them to death.

I do also agree that the simplicity of the song is it's driving force...but for me it is also it's biggest downfall.

There’s no downfall or negative about Paranoid. Yeah it was a commercial hit, but only for those that are now in their late 50’s/60’s and 70’s which would be more in the minority fan base these days.

Hmm, I need to think about that, I'll come back to you! ;)

EDIT:
OK I've had a think about it. One thought that crossed my mind is that quite often the title track is far from the strongest track on the album... not saying they're all bad mind, just that there are usually better songs on each album!

1. Powerslave
2. The Number of the Beast
3. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
4. Iron Maiden
5. Final Frontier
6. Brave New World
7. Dance of Death
8. Caught Somewhere in Time
9. Killers
10. Fear of the Dark
11. Book of Souls
12. Senjutsu
13. No Prayer for the Dying

That is quite true indeed...Same was with Sabbath but with Maiden it's maybe even more evident... I'd say that Dance Of Death, Fear Of The Dark and Seventh Son are the only ones that are the best from those albums.

Powerslave is on the other end of the spectrum as it's on the bottom half of the songs from that album.

Hang on, lemmee rank my Sabs tunes...

1. The Mob Rules
2. Heaven And Hell
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
4. Paranoid
5. Seventh Star
6. Eternal Idol
7. Never Say Die
8. Black Sabbath
9. Born Again
10. Headless Cross
11. Forbidden

I worked from the bottom up, with Forbidden and HC as my lowest two. The sludge on Born Again ruins what could have been so much better. Black Sabbath coming in at 8 will likely shock, but I never did cotton to it when I was a kid and it never caught on with me later on. NSD needs better production, but I don't think it would rank higher with the 5 above it.

Yes, I put Seventh Star in at 5. That song gets stuck in my mind in a good way from time to time and I like that. Having heard non-album versions of the tune only makes me like it more.

I heard both Heaven and Hell and Paranoid on the radio before I bought Sabs albums, but The Mob Rules totally captured my attention from the Early Dio era and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was on the first Sabs album I actually bought because I didn't have a lot of cash and it was in a markdown bin at the record store. So I bought it, felt creepy about the cover, and got BLOWN AWAY by the opener, so that's why it's above Paranoid for me.

Now for the Irons...

1. The Number of the Beast
2. Powerslave
3. Fear of the Dark
4. Brave New World
5. The Final Frontier
6. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
7. Caught Somewhere in Time
8. Iron Maiden
9. Killers
10-13. TIE because they are kinda all the same song to me... The Book of Souls, Senjutsu, No Prayer for the Dying, Dance of Death

Started at the top - Number of the Beast and Powerslave are Peak Maiden in my opinion. If Still Life had been titled Piece of Mind, it would be in at number one.

Then there are the rest... I honestly remember my big disappointment in hearing the synthesizers at the start of Somewhere in Time - had Maiden gone the route of Van Halen took with 1984, I wondered... the rest of the song after the intro picked up, though. There's also the meh I felt about the DiAnno years and feeling burned after Seventh Son, even though I really liked the title track. A lot of Maiden sounds like the same song, over and over, especially in the longer tunes, they all seem to follow the same plot.

The Final Frontier stands out from that group. It is more straight-ahead metal, not faffing about with the intro or endless meedly-meedly solos. That goes in at 5 for me. That's because I like the Jethro Tull-like opening of Brave New World even more than TFF. :)

Fear of the Dark is brilliant stuff, that goes in at 3.

Made it a tie on my bottom 4 because they all blend in with each other. If someone made a megamix with those, I really wouldn't know when one got mixed into the other.

Also next please to Motorhead oh boy oh boy!

I'd ask for Deep Purple, but they had like 9 out of 22 albums with a title track, and that's counting Concerto for Group and Orchestra! :D
Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 14, 2023, 04:53:12 AM
I was thinking about doing Purple next eventhough that's gonna be a short list. :D

I thought there'd be maybe bit more variance in Maiden than Sabbath for us...Quite surprised to see Number Of The Beast being #1...it's a great song for sure!

For me Iron Maiden has always rocked the most...that riff is just brilliant. I was also very much expecting to be the only one to rank Dance Of Death so high but that song is like the perfect example of the "other" side of Maiden as compared to IM. And it also has a great riff and some killer vocals. Also the fact that that album is the last good Maiden album makes a lot of difference as well.

Honestly though songs from 3 to 7 could change order any given day as those are all pretty darn good tracks and all have something very Maiden in them...that being said as previously mentioned out of them only Seventh Son and Fear are the best tracks of those albums. Powerslave is on the bottom half of the songs Alexander and Loneliness take the lead over Time and ofcourse Prisoner and Hallowed go over Beast.

Killers was the hardest one to rate here for me...it's a killer (pun intented) track but it's also very different in comparison to any other classic maiden title track...

Deep Purple it is, then! With the understanding Motorhead's next! :D

1. Fireball
2. Burn
3. Stormbringer
4. Perfect Strangers
5. Bananas
6. Book of Taliesyn
7. The Rapture of the Deep
8. Concerto for Group and Orchestra
9. The Battle Rages On

Top-down approach on this one, first 3 slotted out of instincts honed over decades of listening to them. :) Even though Fireball is totally pinched off of Canadian band Warpig, Deep Purple ran with it and did a lot more with it than the original group. Burn and Stormbringer show the direction Blackmore's about to take with Dio in Rainbow, hold on to your hats, metalheads!

Perfect Strangers is the best of the rest, followed for me by what I consider my favorite track from an overall flawed album, Bananas. Book of Taliesyn is a fast-paced number from the first lineup and I like the way it rocks. It gives a hint that 3 of these guys will be doing Speed King in a few months' time...

The Rapture of the Deep isn't a strong track, but I like it somewhat. Concerto has a fun start, bogs in the middle, and gets fun again towards the end, but it's a HUGE investment of time to get through it all. Kind of like a long flight overseas: takeoff and landing are fun, but there's that middle bit where you are painfully aware of how small your seat is and that line for the bathroom seems like it's out to get you. TBRO is from an album that shouldn't have happened - Blackmore and Gillan were ready to kill each other, there should not have been a steel cage match equivalent with this album and the following tour. Once Satriani showed up to do guitar work, they were free to fly.

Jumped the shark! I was gonna put this up tomorrow! :D

Also you missed one. ;)

1. Perfect Strangers
2. Fireball
3. Burn
4. The Rapture Of The Deep (that riff is GOLD)
5. The Battle Rages On
6. Bananas
7. Purpendicular Waltz
8. Stormbringer
9. Concerto For Group And Orchestra
10. Book Of Taliesyn

My IM list would pretty much be in line with the others, so I'll skip it. Deep Purple: Burn and Stormbringer are interchangeable as number one, and much of their material post PS I've never heard.

1. Burn
2. Stomrbringer
3. Fireball
4. Perfect Strangers
5. Book of Taliesyn

... that's as far as I can go. I still cannot believe they released an album called Bananas.

Not my area of expertise! But...

1. Fireball
2. Burn
3. Perfect Strangers
4. Stormbringer

... err, that's about all I know!

Also you missed one. ;)

Arguable, as it's not *matching* the album title. Be that as it is, I'd put it on my list between Burn and Stormbringer because I really love that tune, I do.

Shame on the rest of you for not being current on your Purple!  :naughty:
Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 14, 2023, 01:22:22 PM
Well no it's not matching...but neither was Caught Somewhere In Time and put that in too so this'll get that same exception. :)

And yes I second on the shame! You guys are missing a HELL of a lot of EXCELLENT music!

5. The Battle Rages On
6. Rapture of the Deep
7. Purpendicular Waltz
8. Bananas
9. Concerto For Group And Orchestra
10. Book Of Taliesyn

Title tracks are very spotty with Purple. First 4 are out and out classics and interchangeable for me but I’ll put Perfect Strangers on top as it represents more what I love/prefer in a title track, a moody and epic feel, but I’ve always wished it went longer. The rest from 5-10 are pretty forgettable but I do love the riff in The Battle Rages On. Don’t know how Z could have that one ranked on the bottom and likewise with Charger don’t know how he’s got Stormbringer so low.

Well frankly I like all these tracks...well maybe not Book Of Taliesyn....and Concerto is a world of it's own as well...But songs 1-8 are all 7 to 10 point songs no doubt about it.

Stormbringer is a solid track but it's the vocals that bring that down. Frankly the version on The Cage album with Tony Martin and Dario Mollo is much better than the original due to the vocals.

Burn ofcourse suffers from the same thing but musically that track is just so brilliant that one can overlook the spotty vocals.

I agree with the Riff on The Battle Rages On being very good. And ofcourse Ian's vocals are top notch as well.

No way, man! The sheer ground-pounding, gut-fucking brutality that is Motorhead defies proper ranking! We have my faves, followed by a bunch that are awesome, then capped off by one that's really good :)

Although the order I put them in is something of a ranking, just very slight distinctions between them.

I expected there to be maybe bit more variety with these....more choices and honestly lot of great title tracks.

But I did expect the top 5 to be roughly the same songs in various different orders. But seeing Motörhead in top 3 is bit mindblowing for me....and Iron Fist NOT being in top 5 is equally shocking.

As for Kilo those two albums are among Motörhead's weakest ones I'd say so you're not really missing much there. The title tracks are easily the best songs on both albums.

True for me and when it's played live, oooooooh yeaaaaaaaaaaaah. And when I hear the studio version of On Parole, I think of the live one as I hear it, which helps it out.

For me, Sacrifice and Orgasmatron are interchangeable, but Orgasmatron does what it does better. Sorry, JtS. :D

I gave each one a listen before I did my rankings and that's where they hit me. I almost put Overkill into slots 1-15 because that song is soooooooo gooooooooooood

4. The World Needs A Hero
5. Endgame
6. 13

Gonna play through all 12 and slot them into the rankings then number them off once I'm done.

1. Peace Sells - that bass intro and the great lyrics and that killer riff and then the big finish oh yeah this one is number one
2. Dystopia - I love this track, proves late-period Megadeth can do what the kids did in the 80s
3. Rust in Peace... Polaris - TASTY drum intro on this one!
4. The World Needs a Hero - TASTY drum line on this one, too!
5. Killing Is My Business - feisty little track, isn't it! I do enjoy it.
6. The Sick, The Dying... and the Dead! - Coming back to this today, I find myself liking it better than I remembered
7. Super Collider - There be some 70s hard rock underneath the metal here, I like that very much yes I do
8. Countdown to Extinction - Poignant work, I do like it. But...
9. United Abominations - a mixed bag with this, I'm on the fence with it.
10. Endgame - Slow start, I prefer it after the opening.
11. 13 - Great lyric, but I'm lookin' for some thrash, here...
.12 Youthanasia - Doesn't do it for me, better stuff on the rest of the album. Nice jazzy bridge in there, though.

Almost the same as Jack's! I just read where Joe Biden has landed in Israel - he would earn massive cred with me if there was a recording of him and the rest of his jet crew blasting Peace Sells through the plane's sound system as they rolled to a stop on the tarmac.  :guitar:

Because, you know, that's exactly what I'd do if "the people" would elect me as president!

1. Peace Sells
2. Rust in Peace...Polaris
3. Killing is my Business...And Business Is Good
4. Countdown to Extinction
5. Endgame
6. Dystopia
7. The Sick...The Dying...And The Dead
8. United Abominations
9. The World Needs a Hero
10. 13
11. Super Collider
12. Youthanasia

I've got 6 of their albums, but 4 I rarely listen to! So I'll need to re-listen to them to work out which ones come in at number 3-6... :D

Well techincally it should be Holy Wars since that song was written about the conflict. ;) But I do get the gist of it.

The lists look pretty much as I thought they would...for the top 5s atleast we're pretty even steven...with just one or two exeptions.

I am surprised to see ZZZ put Dystopia in top 3! It's a good song but to me it's on the weaker side of the album as it lacks the punch of the other songs. Youthanasia being on the bottom end is right...for me the final 3 are pretty equally weak the order could have been different.

A big  to ZZZ for also putting The World Needs a Hero as #4!

I went song by song without context of the larger album, so, yeah, Dystopia does well standing on its own. Same for The World Needs a Hero.

Interesting that it's

1. Peace Sells
2-13. (mix of songs)
14. Youthanasia

Makes me wonder what we'd want instead of Youthanasia as a title track. Me, I'd go with Victory.
Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 18, 2023, 09:41:44 AM
Well honestly Youthanasia is a very very poor album. Dave's vocal experiments fail miserably and the songs just seem very rushed and they completely lack any magic that was present in the albums before and after....it's kind of a classic in between work.

Honestly there are only two tracks that I like Train Of Consequences which is actually very good and The Killing Road which is okay... A Tout Le Monde is a bit of a lemon too...never understood why that became such a hit...but Ballads tended to become hits in the 90s.

The Killing Road would have been a good album title and the song is better than Youthanasia.

Killing Road was my second choice. Now all we need is a time machine and the address of the studio... :smug:

1. Rust in Peace... Polaris
2. Countdown to Extinction
3. Peace Sells
4. Dystopia
5. 13
6. The Sick... The Dying... and The Dead

I don't own or know the others

There’s a reason why Dystopia is still in the setlist when they headline their own shows. It’s one their best songs from the last 10-20 years.

I would recommend getting The World Needs A Hero and Endgame atleast. Both good records... United Abominations I'd stay far far far far away and Super Collider is much better than its reputation but it's still not what I'd call a great album.

Also no Killing Is My Business?? Get it. FAST!

Just go through the albums that you don’t have Kilo and decide for yourself what you like. If you can’t be arsed going through them all “rate your music” might be able to help steer you to what’s generally considered the better albums.

Those kinds of rate-sites are popularity sites...what's popular doesn't automatically make it good...Best to stay clear from those and deside for yourself without prejudice...

Well well well...What's next then...hmmm...

Let's do a quick easy one here before moving on to something bit more comprehensive.

DIO

1. Holy Diver
2. The Last In Line
3. Killing The Dragon
4. Dream Evil
5. Strange Highways
6. Sacred Heart
7. Lock Up The Wolves
8. Master Of The Moon

The difference here with most other bands that we've done is that there isn't a single weak track on the list. They're all pretty brilliant and some are the best tracks from those albums too...

For tracks I haven't heard before, I just fire up the ol' YouTube and give them a spin. Helps a lot with bands that I stopped following at some point. Also helps to put a fresh coat of paint on my memories of said songs, as things may have changed since I last listened to them. I'll be doing the Dio tunes later to-day.

Tempted to include Long Live Rock and Roll in the list, otherwise it's on a list of one for Rainbow title tracks featuring Dio...
1. Long Live Rock and Roll

:D
Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 19, 2023, 08:49:35 AM
Hmmm....where would Long Live Rock 'n Roll be on the list...that's actually an interesting premise but ofcourse a bit mute one...

BUT if gun would be held to my head and I wouldn't be shot unless I put it in there I might say as high as right after The Last In Line.
Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Zzzptm on October 19, 2023, 09:06:59 AM
OK, my Dio rankings...

1. The Last in Line
2. Holy Diver
3. Killing the Dragon
4. Dream Evil
5. Strange Highways
6. Master of the Moon
7. Lock Up the Wolves
8. Sacred Heart

Dio's title tracks tend toward being lengthy and deliberate in tempo. While I like generally like faster tracks, Dio's storytelling ability can hold my attention when he's on point. But the last 4 on my list, well, I pretty much check out on those tracks - something's missing from them and they don't keep my attention the way Last in Line or Stargazer do.

Its just a general rating as to what people think are best to worst. Given its got Rust rated best and Risk rated worst I’d say it’s close to spot on.

1. Holy Diver
2. The Last in Line
3. Sacred Heart
4. Dream Evil
5. Killing the Dragon
6. Lock up the Wolves
7. Master of the Moon
8. Strange Highways

Holy Diver and The Last in Line are out and out classics while Sacred Heart and Dream Evil are both very solid. Of the rest, besides Killing the Dragon the rest are insanely boring and plod along, much like Dio’s solo career did post Dream Evil.

I thought I had all the albums but I've just realised I don't have Strange Highways!! No idea how that happened...

1. Holy Diver
2. The Last in Line
3. Dream Evil
4. Sacred Heart
5. Lock up the Wolves
6. Killing the Dragon
7. Master of the Moon

Strange Highways - To Be Decided

You should most certainly have that one! It's a monster of an album. Super heavy...a great successor to Dehumanizer!
Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 21, 2023, 06:20:54 AM
Then I guess it's time to get going again...this time
Let's go for

JUDAS PRIEST

There is one tricky one here as for some totally uncomprehensible reason Killing Machine was called Hell Bent For Leather in some places...and those two songs are in very different quality. Hell Bent For Leather is heavy metal classic and Killing Machine is not in that league...not even close.
BUT I think it needs to be Killing Machine as that was the title that came out first in the UK.

1. Painkiller
2. Screaming For Vengeance
3. Nostradamus
4. Ram It Down
5. Jugulator
6. Stained Class
7. Heavy Duty / Defenders Of The Faith
8. Killing Machine
9. Turbo Lover
10. Firepower
11. Redeemer Of Souls
12. Rocka Rolla

I was actually bit surprised myself that Nostradamus got so high up there but that is THE best track on the album and it really is a great one! And I think that it, Painkiller and Turbo Lover are the only ones that are the best tracks of the albums...on every other album there are songs far better than the title track.

1. Painkiller
2. Stained Class

4. Screaming for Vengeance
5. Turbo Lover
6. Ram it Down
7. Killing Machine
8. Heavy Duty/Defenders of the Faith
9. Nostradamus
10. Firepower
11. Rocka Rolla
12. Jugulator

I think there’s no harm in adding HBFL. It just feels right given it’s the title track from the U.S version.

1.  Painkiller
2.  Screaming for Vengeance
3.  Hell Bent for Leather
4.  Stained Class
5.  Nostradamus
6.  Ram it Down
7.  Killing Machine
8.  Heavy Duty/Defenders of the Faith
9.  Firepower
10. Turbo Lover
11. Rocka Rolla
12. Jugulator

I pulled out Point of Entry to remind myself of why it is "less than". A couple of decent tracks, a bunch that don't stack up. BUT, it led me to see that I have a WLP of Hell Bent for Leather, and a red vinyl copy of Killing Machine. BUT, the copy of Killing Machine I have also includes an order form for official merchandise backed with a map of the UK and tour dates for their 1980 tour. BUT, the official merch had pictures of two hot as fuck women wearing only a Judas Priest t-shirt.

This made me want to fill out the order form and pick up a couple of those shirts then have my wife wear one lol. I told her about my idea, and she threw something at me.

They did have a cool looking leather wrist band for sale, though.

I do wish you would stop highlighting the gaps in my musical knowledge. I was never a huge JP fan, despite doing some great stuff over the years. I've got about 4 or 5 of these albums.

However is there a reason Redeemer of Souls is missing from the list?

Haha!

:sorry:

I have to admit I kind of thought that I would choose bands that most of us know...

Reedeemer Of Souls had a title track? I had forgot about that...but to be honest that song is so bloody horrible (and the whole album so mediocre it's not even funny) I think I just blocked it out! :D

Title: Re: Battle of the TITLE tracks!
Post by: Charger on October 24, 2023, 09:02:59 AM
Well that I think we CAN do! Pretty short list but what the heck!

So let's go!

OZZY OSBOURNE

1. Diary Of A Madman
2. No More Tears
3. Bark At The Moon
4. The Ultimate Sin
5. Black Rain
6. Let Me Hear You Scream
7. Patient #9
8. Ordinary Man

I thin you can easily split these into 4 groups. The first 2 are classic masterpieces the following 2 are classics the next two are pretty damn weak and the final two are utter and total turds.

For Ozzy, I'm going to have a bit of a faux pas...

1. Bark at the Moon
2. Diary of a Madman

(significant distance)

3-8. All the others, I really can't get into Ozzy much after BatM.

I thought there might have been more, but I didn't check!

3. Bark At The Moon
4. The Ultimate Sin
5. Patient #9
6. Ordinary Man
7. Let MNe Hear You Scream
8. Black Rain

This was pretty much as I expected...the top 4 being the same (with slight variance in order obviously) and the top of the barrel being what it is...

As for ZZZ....you pulled a Vyn there buddy...darn it!

So what might be next?

Savatage?
Slayer?
Alice Cooper?

Or shall we call it a day?

Could do The Beatles, only 5 title tracks in their catalog.

I'm not familiar with those three bands... and a candidate would need to have a long career without numbered albums to get a good set of tracks to compare.

That's why I threw out those bands...they all have a rather lengthy careers and lots of albums...and title tracks. :)

Something just dawned on me...I don't know a single Beatles title track....was Yellow Submarine a title track?

Yellow Submarine

1. Help
2. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
3. Magical Mystery Tour
4. Let It Be
5. A Hard Days Night
6. Yellow Submarine
7. Please Please Me

*Alice Cooper could be a good one to rank next
