Title: Bonham's drumming
Post by: Zzzptm on April 18, 2023, 08:24:25 AM
When I was a kid and playing air guitar along with all the songs, I didn't notice it. But last night, I thought I'd revisit some Zeppelin and was counting out the beats... and damn if Bonham didn't constantly lose the beat every time he did a fill. The song was "Achilles Last Stand" and it was really tough to listen to Page and Jones keeping time all right and Bonham having to play constant catch up with them. He's good at playing loud and getting a good sound out of his drums, but daaaaaaaaang, he's not always a steady clock, like a drummer should be.

I'm contrasting it with the drumming on Funkadelic's "Big Footin'". That song has some complicated rhythms, but that drummer, Jerome Eugene "Bigfoot" Brailey, damn if that cat isn't playing clean and steady all the way through.

And then I found this track, it's some awesome drumming and the whole band is TIGHT:
