Seems like a good app, but to ask a dumb question because I’m illiterate when it comes to IT. Can I download it and will it work for me in Australia?

It operates locally, so it should be good around the globe. Zimperium is a global company, I'd think it should do the job. Give it a go and let me know how it works.

I don't use my phone for anything banking related or anything where security might be an issue.

Most certainly not whatsapp as that is about as secure as card board box.

Now for the first time though I do have a phone powerful enough to carry a security software but I still don't think it's needed in my use.

In case anyone was interested, for texting I use the Signal app.  All texsts are encoded, so if they are intercepted, they cannot be read.  Plus the Signal company does not save your text on any servers, so once you erase the text from your phone, it is gone forever.  Only people using the Signal app can text one another.
 The app is free.

It's a strong app with good respect in the security community.
