Title: Winter Olympics 2022
Post by: Charger on February 04, 2022, 08:45:17 AM
The games just started yesterday....

Been watching curling...the couples tournament started right away. It's bit different from the team version (mainly lesser stones) but it is equally fascinating and needs even more cunning planning.

Rooting for Canada and Great Britain as always.

But there is a first timer in the games as well and that's AUSTRALIA!! Where the heck did they get the ice to practice curling is beyond me...I guess they just built an oversize freezer or something....
Sure they haven't won a single match but still just making it to the games was a win for them I am sure.

I'll keep an eye in but won't spend hours watching it. There's certain events I always like watching, Bobsleigh and it's variants, Ski Jump, Downhill. Not so interested in the new events like skateboarding, but it appeals to the kids I suppose. Never been much of a fan of the figure skating either.

Apparently the UK are expected to win between 3 and 7 medals, I'm guessing curling will be in there!

It would be strange indeed if the UK won't get a single Curling medal...I'm thinking they might even get two.

As far as the other sports go I have very little interest either...it's basically just Curling for me.  :wootwoot:

Curling already started? Ow! I'm not even done with the Scotties yet!

Both Canadian full teams are strong this year, they did amazing work in the qualifier. Rachel Homan and John Morris are both excellent curlers, but Homan had a rough time in the qualifiers. Morris was with team Koe and did better there. Reading about the Homan/Morris loss to UK, and it sounds like they're getting the feel for the ice there, hoping they got it figured out.

Homan had one amazing peel shot in the match against the UK but the final end was a bit of a disaster for them.

I like some of the freestyle skiing namely the aerials as it’s usually Australia’s strongest event and its fun to watch. Australia also has a female in the moguls that’s favourite to win gold. Also enjoy some of the snowboarding events. My brother trains Scotty James at his boxing gym when his back home in Melbourne who competes in the snowboarding half pipe. He won bronze at the 2018 winter events. The Ski jump is also a must watch.

Congrats to Italy for winning the gold in mixed doubles!

They did not lose a single match...that is rather unheard of I think. Extremely well played.

NBC in the USA owns the rights for Olympics material, so since I don't subscribe to them, I'm not able to watch the curling matches. Bummer.

That sucks...here is a bit of a mixed bag...two different tv networks show the olympics but neither really focuses on Curling so we get a match here another there...so I went on and paid 9.99€ (one month sub) of Discovery Plus where they show everything. So I can watch all the matches I want to.

The GB team may struggle to get even the low end of the medal estimate as as least two medal hopes have underperformed and won't be troubling the medal rostrum.

I also noticed that Australia have a Gold and a Bronze... have I slipped into an alternate universe where the Aussies are a winter sports power? ;)

Hardly, but we do seem to do fairly well at the winter Olympic sports that don’t require snow to practice. Got Scotty James coming up in the snowboarding half-pipe. Big chance for gold or at least a medal of some colour.

Scotty James got the silver. The Japanese competitor got the gold on the last run of the final. The legendary Shaun White missed a medal for the first time in 4 Olympics.

Finland got two as well yesterday. Both of our top women skiiers brought medals...Silver and bronze...lost the gold only for 0.4 seconds.

And today we got gold also in skiing.

These are shaping up to be our best games in a long time.

GB doing crap! Even the curlers are underperforming. Wake me 4 years! ;)

Ok, UK now guaranteed 2 medals (men's and women's curling are both assured of at least a silver), the men have looked solid all the way through, but the women have been less assured but good when they needed to be.

UK did solid work in curling, well done to their rinks! I'm happy for Team Gushue, which got a bronze. I was hopeful for more, he's a fantastic skip with a talented team. So disappointed Jennifer Jones didn't get further in the medal hunt, but that just goes to show how competitive world curling has gotten. I also like to cheer for Sweden's Hasselborg, hope her crew can get the bronze!

The GB team ended up with a Gold (Women's curling) and a Silver (Men's curling), so a final tally of 2 is less than the 3-7 medals that were predicted before the games began.

Slightly galling to see we're behind Australia on the medal table! ;)

Finally got around to watch the final! What a great match indeed! Felt really bad for Japan though with that big loss of 4 points in that one end...But they were real troopers and without a doubt the most colorful and positive team on the ice I have ever seen! Such a delight to watch them play.

But ofcourse I have to be extremely happy for Eve Muirhead for finally getting the gold that she most certainly deserves...being probably one of the best (if not THE best) in the world..

About the whole olympics...Finland did waaaay better than anyone expected. 8 medals and 2 of them GOLD! That was quite something. So gotta be happy about that...Finland is slowly coming back as wintersport nation...naturally we're still faaaar behind from where we used to be...but still...moving in the right direction atleast.
