So came across this last night which kinda inspired me to start this thread as I didn’t know where to post it. Was uploaded to YouTube only 2 years ago. Dio live in Melbourne September 16 1986 at Festival Hall which was one of my earliest metal shows and my first time seeing Ronnie in concert.
Was 15 years old at the time and still remember the whole day like it was yesterday and have story to tell about it. Still to this day in my top 5 favourite shows ever.
Hope more footage from the videographer exists and is uploaded.
This is better than finding gold for me
-
Man, that's back when recording concerts was some shady stuff that only the hardcore guys who would sneak a very expensive camera into an event would attempt.

Which makes me think there’s gotta be more footage. Why go through the trouble of lugging/sneaking in a big camera to only video 2 songs? Unless the videographer got busted and booted out or told to put it away.
I was actually positioned on the same side as where the footage was taken, just a little bit further right to the camera.
Saw many a band at that same venue. With Deep Purple in 84, Maiden in 85, Dio in 86 and Metallica in 89 being the best of them.
-
Security may have put eyes on him but chose not to be heavy, just a "you got your 2 songs, now cut it out" sort of deal.
But soundboard recordings are another deal entirely - witness Charger's report of the lost Motorhead tapes from Norwich 1998. Those were ones that were either band-authorized... or the board operator's best mate got to roll tape without anyone being wise to it... but those are the best bootleg recordings to find, short of ones done for official radio/television programmes.

Pretty cool little video clip! Thanks for posting.
Quite often these older audience videos are incomplete for what ever reason....usually probably due to the cameras being rather big they were easily spotted by the security teams and removed...batteries dying was another big thing...
I could check some of my known videos lists and see if there's a mention of Melbourne 1986...
EDIT:
Yes a full recording of that show exists:
1986 Melbourne , Australia 09/16/86 @ Festival Hall / Camshot (A) 93min.
So it is out there...

^ Looks like Jack just got a mission!

Wanting to get back to Dio... what were his reasons for going industrial starting with Strange Highways? I've always wondered about that direction.
-
Industrial?
I always just saw Strange Highways as a pretty straight forward sequal to Dehumanizer...as a really heavy doomy metal.
Heavy Metal was pretty much dead and dying in the 90s and most bands changed their sound to suit that time...darker, heavier...It was kind of like a fuck you to the whole "Metal is Dead" thing...Radio and MTV isn't playing us anyways so why even bother making radio friendly happy sounding shit?
I think part of it came out of frustration as well...
Angry Machines has one track that you might consider bit industrial and that's Stay Out Of My Mind with that big synth part in the middle...not the greatest thing the DIO band has ever done I must admit.
But even so Angry Machines is pretty far from Monster Magnet or other industrial metal bands sounds I think.
But had Ronnie never gotten back together with the Sabbs I don't think we would have gotten albums as heavy as SH and AM...
-
For me, though, Strange Highways didn't really gel. There were about two tracks I remember liking from SH and when I heard AM was in the same vein, I just gave it a pass. Is it time to revisit those albums?
-
I absolutely love Strange Highways...It's just a great heavy piece. Tracy G is a great riffer...might not be the greatest soloist but his riffs are really unique sounding.
Angry Machines gets a lot of hate and I can understand part of it but not all of it. It too has some great tracks but it is I guess stuffy...in lack of a better word. It would benefit from a bit more clearer production.
I would most certainly recommend revisiting Strange Highways...it's my third favourite DIO album right after Holy Diver and Magica.
-
Will do. Shall we start up a song by song thread for it?
-
I just realised I don't have Strange Highways, I thought I had all his albums after I got Angry Machines the other year. Don't know how that happened!

Well that’s good to know. I hope the full show does exist.

Hmm… Contacting the YouTube uploader might be a good place to start.

So I gave Angry Machines a listen just now. First reaction is that the final song is a masterwork of Dio's. Absolutely wonderful, beautiful song.
The rest of the album didn't really impress me that much. It's heavy for sure, but I'm not really moved by it, similar to how I felt after listening to Strange Highways.
-
^^^
It took a few listens especially the first half, but I now enjoy most of it, even the jazzy stuff!

Oh dude, that's awesome!
-
Is is except you wouldn’t know it was him if not for the stage get up. They should’ve done an 80’s Ronnie. They missed the mark on this one.
-
Yeah, just seeing that sitting around I'd have no idea who it was supposed to represent.
-
Maybe they're planning figures for all the band members so you can have better context?
-
Haha, maybe! When they come out with the Jimmy Bain figure, we'll see :)
-

I doubt that very much. Maybe they’ll do a Black Sabbath Ronnie version and Dio solo version though.
-

Well the same thing has been with all the other characters they've done...they look nothing like the people they supposed to be...I'm thinking it's intentionally stupid.
-
That can be true but most of the time there’s an identifying feature on the face or head, then finished off with the clothing. This Ronnie one looks like it could be anyone and they’ve just slapped on Rainbow era clothing.
-
Well Ronnie really didn't have any identifying features on his face as he didn't have a beard or mustache or anything...They did add his trademark horns though.
But honestly the only one of these figurines I've seen that is instantly recognizable is Lemmy....all the others could basically just be anyone....which is why I don't understand these things at all.
-
Yeah maybe the hair could’ve been closer to the mark. As for the horns, it’s an obvious trait with Ronnie, only thing is, he didn’t use the horns in Rainbow.
-
Haha! That's true indeed!
-
Maybe this is why some collectors just keep them in the box, so they have some context...

Interesting interview with Vinny Appice regarding the business side of the original band and Vivian being irreplaceable. I agree with him that Dio’s solo career went downhill after Vivian was fired.
https://blabbermouth.net/news/vinny-appice-says-he-was-bummed-when-vivian-campbell-was-fired-from-dio-its-not-true-that-everybody-is-replaceable
-
Great article share there. Also good for having Bain's comments corroborate with Appice's observations.
-
Yeah I don’t think it was just a coincidence that Ronnie had a string(no pun intended) of guitar players go through his band after Vivian was fired.
-
Also no coincidence that the quality of the band's music dropped off for a good long while.

Upcoming RSD release. First time on vinyl. Limited to 8000
https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/15895
Not sure I’m a fan of that cover art though

-
Yeah... are there really that many zombies in Fresno?
-
Would like the cover better if they removed the mouth from the devil thing.
-
I've never been a huge fan of Marc Sasso's post Master Of The Moon artworks...he's gotten bit too cartoony for my liking and it doesn't quite fit DIO's style either...I'm not sure that Ronnie would have aproved this change in direction if he'd still be with us.
Those record store day things suck as you'd pretty much have to order one from the states and that would be crazy expensive so I won't be getting this one I think...especially as it's just black vinyl.
-
The spirit of RSD was killed long ago. Use to be you had to actually go into the store to buy the RSD release. Now the stores sell them online for stupid prices and flippers buy them all up and re-sell them for and even stupider prices.
-
Agree 100% Jack. I used to look forward to it, made sure to hit up the local shops - one year I missed it and was pissed off at myself. Haven't cared about it for years, because of what you mentioned: can just go online and buy whatever you want as long as you pay the inflated prices.
It became a monster that ate itself.
-
I see "Limited Edition" on some releases and read instead "we don't expect to move a ton of merch with this issue, so it's a small pressing..."

One of my favourite record stores in Melbourne posted this today.

I can't argue with their logic! I notice they have an online shop, I might buy something just to show my support of their position on the matter.

Im popping by tomorrow and do so every 2 weeks. If you see something you like let me know. They give me discounts.
-
Thanks Jack - I actually just bought three records from their store right before I looked at this post. Picked up The Chats' latest, one by The Scientists, and one from Amyl and the Sniffers. They'll probably be wondering why some dude in the middle of the US is buying records from them lol
-
I’ll tell Ben tomorrow :) How was postage costs? I think he’s usually pretty reasonable. He packs his vinyl expertly.
-
Postage was less than I figured for international, came in at $45 USD.
-
After a bit of time waiting for a flight, my Goldmine Records order is now in the air! So there's a good chance I'll have it by this weekend.
-
Wow that’s quick. Be sure to post a photo :)

A new unreleased DIO song is coming next year!

Oooh cool news!
-
I ponder how much will this Vinyl boxset cost....they are all colored vinyl...looks like a cool set...if it's not crazy expensive I might get it.
https://blabbermouth.net/news/dio-the-studio-albums-1996-2004-limited-edition-deluxe-cd-and-lp-box-sets-due-in-september
-
Chances are, though... it will be crazy expensive... but, with luck, Gene Simmons will hand-deliver it to you! :D
-
If it would be around the same money as those Savatage Colored vinyls were (around 25€ each) then I think it would be alright...but I do fear it'll be 150€ or more...and then I'll give it a hard pass...
-
Ronnie Dio solo rocker from 1965. Flip side is a ballad that I don't think wore well over time, but this one's pretty dang heavy for '65!
-
Seeing that picture of him in full mid-60's nightclub attire with requisite shit-eating grin, and hearing "high noon, oh I'd sell my soul for water" in my head and I cannot put the two together.

He was on a journey, for sure...
