Ah, so they're *opening* with Highway Star on this tour, eh? :smug:

So many songs in their catalog, so they can always be reaching back for a deep cut they ain't done in a while!

Gabriel's - "Great Wind"

This one came out just a few years ago, and became an instant favorite of mine. It is such an emotionally-packed lyric and I broke down crying listening to it again just now. It was a good cry, the kind Ozzy asks about in "Looking for Today". And although I've been doing my best to avoid crises and tough times since it came out in 2023, this song has been there for me. Even when I'm not having a tough time, it reminds me of what I've been through and what I've yet to endure, and how love is gonna be the duct tape of life that binds us all together, but not in a hippy-drippy way, it's a real confrontation of losses, conclusions, and departures and why you tell someone you love them every day.

Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline

Fun fact: Neil Diamond was a Dodgers fan, so he never participated in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. As such, he has no issues with the Red Sox singing his "Sweet Caroline" during games.

Also fun fact: The Dodgers' owner was wanting a stadium with better transportation connections because he was having trouble selling out games. He was looking at a site in Queens, but chose instead to have the town of Brooklyn condemn land and then sell it to him so he could build a stadium. They told him, "Hey, you got money, why don't you buy it yourself?" So the owner went into talks with LA, which *was* willing to condemn land and hand it over to the owner.

But the baseball league wanted there to be another California team, so the Dodgers' owner convinced the NY Giants' owner to move with him, and that's how we got the LA Dodgers and the SF Giants.

Then, after that, the baseball league felt that another NY team was warranted and so they created the Mets.

And now I got "Sweet Caroline (Da Da Daaaaah)" stuck in my head, which isn't all that bad, really.

Johnny Cash knew age was advancing on him... but he responded masterfully, going to lower registers and taking up material where a crack or break in the voice would add to the interpretation instead of breaking it.

Some of the team names don't even make sense.  I doubt there are many cardinals flying around in Arizona.

Which is why one sports writer suggested they be called the "Arizona Cactus Wrens".

Sports / Good-hearted fun facts about college football teams
« on: June 10, 2026, 08:39:56 AM »
Matt Mitchell is an Alabama comedian that does a roast of the week in SEC football each week called "SEC Roll Call". He's hilarious and why I got into watching SEC games, along with the SEC Shorts comedy team. He recently did two videos about something good about every Division I NCAA football team and they truly are fun facts:

He's not afraid to make a few good-natured ribs on big teams and he also finds some genuinely good things to say about a whole lot of teams that, before I saw this, were just a letter on a colored piece of fabric to me. Now I know a little more about their traditions and culture, and it makes me enjoy the sport all the more. Since we got to talkin' about football situations we wished were better in another thread, it got me to remember these and share them here. Hope y'all enjoy!

@Zzzptm:  Sorry, but my friends and I still say the Washington Redskins.  Not because of any negativity, but for the same reason we still say the San Diego Chargers.  Its just been too many years that way and it ain't going to change now.   :)

I don't blame ya or take umbrage there. I knew a massive Redskins fan, he was one of the Question Leads for AP Economics grading that I did for 7 years. When we had our end-of-the-week social, he would bellow out the Washington Football Redskins fight song as part of the festivities. Younger folks want to say "Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons", but "Redskins" still has a nice two-syllable ring to it.

And I'm still wanting there to be a San Diego Chargers, as well. Hell, I still want a St. Louis Cardinals football team and a Houston Oilers.

What is "Minis" ?   ???

Mini Coopers, as they were small enough to wriggle an escape in the tight Italian streets.

Yeah, the things that matter most are the lands and their rights, along with water rights. And as for terminology, I know a lot of Indians that are Indians. Adding syllables always signifies that a major screw job is coming, like the extra beats means the problems are being handled and we don't need to worry. Like what happened when bums became homeless and then unhoused persons. We need to use simple words without hate so we can wrap our heads around things like problems that poor people have. Socioeconomically disadvantaged people live in another galaxy, for all we can tell, but I know where the poor folks in my area are, and I can help them out.

And for the tribe name, even those can be loaded, especially if the name is some other tribe's word for "mother-raping weak-ass possum-kissers" or some such insult. But whatever someone wants to be called, that's what I'll respect.

Deep Purple - "No One Came"

A song for trying and realizing success is not just in working hard, there's a good deal of luck involved, as well. And if you don't get that luck, or it turns the other way, well... you're still there and you've got some stories to tell.
